AT&T Tilt Trial vs. Number Portability

Greets,

I am a verizon customer who was waiting for the Tilt like everyone else. In the interim, AT&T has been moving so many things around (such as double rebates showing a too high price; and removal of the $39.99 unlimited data plan) that I have not yet been able to make the plunge.

However, I have seen some people talking about Number Portability being required from the get-go; perhaps only on Premiere.

Does anyone *KNOW* (please, no guesses or theories) if I can do a trial run on the Tilt/AT&T (either thru premiere, newegg, or otherwise) and, if AT&T does not show to be awful in my area, then port my number over?

Thanks!

I didn't do it specifically on a Tilt but I did exactly that on an iPhone. I was with Verizon with an i730 and got tired of waiting for the i760. Since I was unsure how the ATT coverage would be I thought I would get one and give it a try. They assigned me a new number and I used it for about two weeks then I call up ATT and requested to port my Verizon number over. Took less than ten minutes and my iPhone was up and running on my old Verizon number.

I also purchased the Tilt and was assigned a new number which I plan to keep. Nothing was mentioned about me having to port a number over to get the rebates and discounts.

I recently purchased a Tilt from a reseller (a non-corporate ATT store), and asked that exact same question (also possibly moving to ATT from Verizon).

The answer was yes. So, what I have now is a new number and trying out the Tilt. In a few weeks, I will decide between the Tilt and the i760. If I go to ATT, then the reseller told me unequivocally that ATT could port my number over, and just lose the new number. (And if the answer is no, it will be within my 30 day trial period. I will just return phone and end service. And then start all over again with the ported number...but I am positive that won't be necessary.)

So, the short answer is: yes. You can do it. At least what I am being told.

The long answer is yes too.

In practicality, you would never want to port your existing number that everybody knows to your new provider until you have given that new provider a run through during the trial period.

Cheers!
