Tilt reset can end AT&T crap?

I got my hands on the 8900, that's AT&T's business version of the Tilt. There are several posts floating around that when you first turn the phone on and just before the AT&T customization crap starts to load and bloat up your memory, do a reset by putting stylus through pin-hole. This will restart the phone w/o all the AT&T crap. Is this true? Im still getting all the bloatware on it. Is there another method or am I not following the method right? Ive already used HardSPL to prep ROM install when I find the right one.
As with all owners, I would like to manually install whatever extras with cab's.
This is the goal for this phone:
1)Start over w/o all the AT&T extra's.
2)Install Kaiser HTCHome v2.0.814.722 cab
3)Install Kaiser Tweak App
Anyone with success in this? Just wanna make it usable till a bugfree ROM comes around.

before you start loading data into it, do a hard reset (hold the two softkeys while you reset it). once it is done, the phone will boot up. after you calibrate, you will see a window pop up saying something like "customizations will begin in three seconds". you must hit the soft reset button on the bottom with the stylus BEFORE these customizations start. so once you see that window, hit the reset button. this will soft reset the phone and stop it from installing all the bloatware.

No, this is only to stop the loading of extra applications that use AT&T data services. I assume you mean SIM unlock and NO it wont. But you can pay for that at many different sites.

obstacles, do you know what applications are cancelled when you do the soft reset? I wanna make sure I did it right. Im still getting things like: Telenav, AT&T Mobile Music, etc.

if you still have all the icons for the demo games, at&t mall, at&t music, etc. then it wasn't done right. try it again. if done correctly, your phone should boot up in the standard windows mobile blue theme as opposed to the at&t theme and none of those icons should be there. i dont remember all of the stuff that is/isn't installed because i ended up flashing my phone with the OEM Kaiser ROM so i have no way of checking.

I'm not familiar with the 8900/8925 so much, but I ran into a little quirk with my 8525 when I tried this trick. Since cingular/at&t changed the keyboard layout from a stock htc tytn, some of the special keys didn't work right. Had to tweak the registry to make it work the way it was supposed to. This was one of the things that the at&t customizations did.

So keep that in mind when you do this, you might run into little glitches here and there, as at&t may have changed the hardware around a bit.

Same thing applies if you go to a stock HTC rom.

very true. but there is a CAB that fixes all the keyboard mapping issues on the tilt following the ROM flash.

Just head on over to XDA-Developers and peruse the relevant forum for your phone. There are more then enough details there on how to customize your phone, replace roms (although from the questions you asked, you may not be ready for the potential to brick your phone, no insult intended, just a fair warning) etc. Additionally, there is the potential that the rom ATT has installed on the phone, has customizations (I do not have the phone so its a pure guess here) built strait into the main rom, not the extended portion where many of the applications run after the initial bootup.

I currently have a hacked up wm6 running on my 8125, and most of the applications installed (I used a rom kitchen to cook up my own custom image) are part of the base, not the extended which is where some of the customizations come from.

It worked, finally! I still get the AT&T logo bootup splash but no AT&T addons nor does it try to connect to 3G automatically.
Ofcourse if you do any hardreset, you will have to do the soft reset before the customizations start all over again. No keyboard issues yet but Im not using any leaked or cooked ROMs either.
