Tilt locks or freezes daily Anyone else?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: the worm

I have had the Tilt less than a week but at least once a day it will not respond to any buttons, sliding the keyboard, an incoming call. I have to pull the battery out to get reset it. Has anyone else had this?

Is there a better way to reset this?

I do have the ATT bloatware.

Thanks

when i had my 8525 the same thing happened to me. i figured out it was just windows mobile in general. i have a blackberry now and im never going back,.

This is probably a long-shot, but do you have Spb Pocket Plus 4 installed?

I have installed several Spb applications without issues, but the recently released Pocket Plus 4 seems to have a particular problem with the Tilt. Posts to Spb's forums describe various less serious bugs on other devices, but the biggest seems to be unique to the HTC Kaiser. P+4 causes it to lockup, and it won't respond to either the power button or the recessed reset button near the USB port, so the only option is to pull the battery. This is happening with the vanilla HTC device, the AT&T Tilt, and several European branded incarnations, which suggests that it isn't the AT&T apps which are to blame. Uninstalling P+4 and going back to P+3 solves the problem.

Spb have not yet figured out what is causing this, but I suppose that whatever it is could happen with other apps too. If you've installed stuff, you might try uninstalling to see if the lockups stop.

Cheers,
Elizabeth

Try disabling Task manager in setting--system

Posted by: importluva

I had those issues and I figured out that a lot of it had to do with my use of PIE or the Task manager. So I did a hard reset, took off the AT&T bloatware, and disabled the HTC Task Manager. So far no lockups.

Are you talking about clearing out programs after you close them or getting rid of that HTC toolbar thing. I clear the task manager regularly.

Just disable it

to do a soft reset, take out the stylus and insert it into the round hole to the top right of the USB port.

Posted by: avega1027

I have SPB mobile shell, mobile diary & Windows live running on the today screen and have had no freezes(been running for about 2 weeks). Plus I have about 15 programs installed(games, slingbox, etc). No freezing for me as long as Ive had my TILT.

Posted by: importluva

Looks like Windows Live Search is causing some freezing as well. I noticed this too when I was testing it out.

Thanks I knew this had to be somewhere. It is frustrating because sometime I dont know I am missing calls because it is locked up but there is no indicaiton. At least w/ my Treo it would reboot on its own.

Most of the time it's user error. Most people also dont know any better on how to fix it.

So let's blame the device! It's like golf....IT'S NOT ME, IT'S THE CLUBS!

A quick example is, if you installed anything that goes on your today screen, onto your storage card instead of the device, it is prone to hang

There seem to be well documented issues with the Kaiser hanging and not performing like a device with its specs should. Just look over at XDA-Developers where even the experts are not quite sure what is going on.

has anyone experienced the phones back light staying on indefinitely????

example: if its charging at night and a girl sends me a late night text message, i wake up and notice the backlight is still on after maybe 30 mins or so...

this happened on 2 different tilts ive had.

Posted by: BioHazard5

I loaded the HTC Touch home screen - posted on XDA site - and immediately started having problems with lockups etc. Hard reset fixed that

Am currently Mobile Shell and Phone suite which provide similar functionality without issue.

I find that if there is a notification and the unit is on the charger than the backlight dims down to the lowest level, but never goes out. However, if you tap the power button the display will not light until you tap it again, or receive a call. This also seems to prevent the display from lighting up when a notification is received when the unit is off the charger.

This small change has greatly increased my battery life. I now see 80%+ available after a day at work.

The backlight is on (at a dimmer setting) if the device is not in sleep mode, and receiving a message wakes it up out of sleep mode. If you want it to go back to sleep after a time period even when it's charging, then go to Settings -> System -> Power -> Advanced, and enable the "turn off device if not used for..." setting. As a default, it only turns itself back off when on battery power.

no lockups here...stock att rom

the Tilt is just an overpriced, overhyped 8525 with a couple of new features.

too bad the POS still has your typical WM hang ups and general "slowness" traits.

I had one a week before launch date and I gave the damn thing up a day and a half later. now I love my iPhone all that much more.

Posted by: kireol

The tilt and tytn ii smoke any other phone out in the U.S. right now, if in the right hands. It's far better than an 8525.

As in my hands

I think I will sell my 3 WM phones and buy 12 iPhones now due to your post. Thank you for your meaningful contribution.

and to think you had to dumb down to an iphone cause yuo couldnt figure out the tilt. oh too bad ifan. considering i have had the phone for a couple weeks now and havent had one lockup it works perfectly fine. no lag that hasnt been fixed. IE iguidance startup lag was fixed because of a conflict between the wireless modem and the software(not a cause of the phone but a cause of the software) the 2 seconds 2 switch from portate to landscape is fixed by setting it to landscape since i use it in landscape anyway the majority of the time. man i love the fact i can install apps of my choosing from the get go with no hacking. i love being able to set my own ringtones without a work around. i love the fact i can use 3g if im in a 3g area. i love the fact i can use the phone and surf the web at the same time. im glad your going to marry your iphone at the iwedding with the ijobs as the official for all the ifans. now with all that isaid move alone and go back to the iphone forums and stop trolling.

Posted by: tiggerlove

no lock up here..had it since it came out on att

Posted by: notrhj

Tilt using ATT rom.
One lockup in MS LiveSearch ver 2.5.2840 required
stylus reset.

Otherwise perfect.

Posted by: MSanad

I have 2 tilts. Both are set up the exact same way. the first one never locks up. the second one however, locks up every now and then.

not sure what that means lol

Posted by: barak

My Tilt is locking constantly. At least 3-4 times per day. I've had enough and will try to swap it for a new one prior to my 30 days being up.

I have the HTC today screen enhancements and that's it as far as hacks.

Posted by: pen25

sounds to me like its the at&t rom. rarely hear of the problem with the tytnII just the tilt

Posted by: nbarksda

Well, I've had my Tilt since Friday and it's lockup three times.

Locked up meaning:
When the device auto powers off (after 1 min) I can't use the power button to turn it back on.

This is a brand new device, nothing has been added or change...no extra software.

I found that by turning the auto power feature off that the problem goes away.

But now I have to keep checking to make sure it's not on so I don't waste any power.

Posted by: VTECaddict

mine locks up when browsing when i had the IE cache/history/cookies stored on memory card. switched it back to phone memory and its fine.

Posted by: barak

I returned my first tilt this past Sunday for a new one and took a different approach. I loaded SPB mobile shell and SPB pocketplus instead of the HTC plugins and I haven't had a single lock up. My phone also isn't rebotting itself upon startup as my first one did.

I don't know if the HTC stuff not being loaded on this pohne is the cause. I do notice much less lag time opening programs and I am starting to like the SPB themes. Still, nothing looked as good as that HTC today page.

Posted by: J5INC

my tilt just stopped working yesterday. tried soft and hard reset. pulled battery. nothing. i don't have any added software or anything like that. just can't get the thing to turn back on. it was fine the day before. ????????

Posted by: elite_is3

aww man yea, mines been freezing continuously on Windows Live search.

i read that this is due to the Power setting for it to auto sleep after "x" amount of time, after disabling it some said it went away but now ur stuck doing it manually.

I guess we wait for a update LOL

Posted by: luvmygadgets

I had the same problem (as did a couple of other folks - discussed in a different thread). I uninstalled my GoogleMaps, and haven't had the problem since (although, for me, it only froze up once).

If it does it again, it's going back for another one.

Posted by: EtherealRemnant

These freezing issues remind me of the 6800.

I think I might rethink my phone choice should I go the at&t route.

Posted by: avega1027

Im curious, the people having the lock-up/freeze issues, did you buy the device @ a store or online?

Posted by: J5INC

I bought mine online.

Posted by: luvmygadgets

It seemed to lock up the one time I mentioned; happened a couple of days after I installed Google Maps. Since I uninstalled it, I haven't had any problems.

Posted by: J5INC

The only problem i had with my tilt was that one day it just stopped working. Now i'm just waiting for at&t to send me a new phone. Going on a week tomorrow and it shows my order as still in progress. hasn't even been shipped yet.?! I'm not to happy with the way this is being handled, i guess i've got to call and start yelling!!

Posted by: thebigmouth

I have to soft reset maybe once every two weeks -- about the same as my old Treo 650.

Posted by: trublu

I've had my tilt for almost a month now. I have the OEM HTC rom on it. apart from live search screwing up a few days ago it has never crashed. Now I just use Yahoo Go! or google maps. Smooth sailing so far.

Posted by: elite_is3

allow LIVE SEARCH to run GPS for a couple mins, see what happens...

this so far is the only TRUE bug/incompatibility ive noticed

Posted by: Cabrera

I've had the tilt for almost 3 weeks. Everything fine until this morning. Touchscreen now only works with my finger, no longer with the wand. Tried everything. Returning tomorrow and will wait for an update before repurchasing or will buy another 3g, wifi phone - if I can find one.

Posted by: elite_is3

this would more than likely be a software issue, just hard reset by going into the system settings and clear storage memory. it will restore to factory state

Posted by: Cabrera

Thanks elite_is3, you're right but I'm still bringing it back. As good as the phone is, I don't have the time to reset, reload, and resync every few weeks. For me, reliability/stability dominates features. My Blackjack1 has some annoying quirks but it's never locked up and all of the installed software has always worked. I guess I'll wait for ATT to release a 3g, wifi (don't care about gps although it would be nice to have) full qwerty phone or I guess I could splurge and pay up for the TYTNII which I guess has been pretty stable.

Posted by: importluva

Try disabling the HTC Task Manager in the settings. For those users that haven't done any hacks or added any programs and still are experiencing problems, I think that disabling the task manager might solve your problems. Reset after you disable it too.

Posted by: Cabrera

That didn't help but even if it did, why would I want to own a $500 phone where I have to disable things to get it to work properly. I guess I'm not as forgiving as some.

There's probably a conflict somewhere, I had issues with the AT&T Bloatware, did a hard reset and prevented the AT&T stuff from loading and I haven't had a problem yet.

Posted by: danny7337

my htc branded one has frozen three times in two days. just during basic use. it doesnt completely freeze. i can click stuff on the desktop and open stuff that way, but none of the buttons work and i cant click the start menu.

i dont see where i can disable the task manager.
i have google maps and tcpmp installed, but was not using them when it froze

I bought a new Tilt on 12/12/07 from AT&T. All worked well until on 2/14/08 I plugged in the charger. The next morning it was locked up and wouldn't turn on. It just had a steady red indicator lite. I tried reinserting the battery, inserting a new battery, doing a reset, using another tilit charger but still no response. A few days later I received my refurbished Tilt and a few hours later the screen dimmed and was not sensitive to touch. A few days later I received a New replacement Tilt but had the same problem as my first Tilt only 2 days after receiving it. I'm very disappointed with the Tilt. I had high hopes that the Tilt would be an improvement from the 8525.

demand to get a new replacement in store if there is a local cor store. so you know you are getting a new non-referbished phone. i havent had a single issue with mine.

I gotta say, its the best pda phone I have ever used
