Device size aside, what's the most comfortable for you?

I've had my Pearl, Curve, 8700c, 7290, 7210 and a few others and I have to say, I'm not a big fan of the newer phones.

I've got the Curve right now and I'm seriously considering dumping it and going back to either an 8700c or even as far back as the 7290. I don't tend to use the media-side of the Curve as much as I'd hoped and between the somewhat clunky case/holster and small keys, I really think I need to step back.

Has anyone gone from these new devices back to an older model? I honestly can't see a reason not to. My use is purely text, email and calendering. That's it. No browsing, no bluetooth, no games, etc. I know it's a step back but I just remember how easy and slick it was to type and holster my phone. I really miss it...

Thoughts?

Well, only you can make that determination. If size is not an issue, then I would say why not? I really liked my 8700 except for the background noise issue. I always thought it was too big, but was worth it from a functionality standpoint. I really loved the size of the 7130, and for me the reduced size of the 8820 with a full QWERTY makes it the right device for me. But hey, we are all different.

The 8700 was good but nothing beat the 7520! Nothing will. Best keyboard, ever. If they could put the screena dn guts of the curve in a 7520 case, I would pay you much money!

Todays Blackberrys feel like cheap toys in comparison.

I've always hated the Blackberry as a phone, despite the fact I absolutely LOVE them for everything else. This is mainly due to a background noise issue that I can't escape for the life of me.

However, I got an 8830 recently and tested out the phone. It's a lot better than it used to be, although you can still hear some background noise as compared to my LG 8600 phone.

All that aside, I think overall the 8700/8703 is the most comfortable. It's not a media phone, but it does have a much nicer screen and I do prefer the keyboard on it to other ones. I do like the 8830 though, but I feel it could slip out of my hand if I use it as a phone long enough.

That's just my 2 cents.

I really like the feel of both the 8800 and 8300, more importently the improvements to incoming and outgoing voice quality are enough that I dont think I would ever go back to an older blackberry.

But the 8703e had a great feel to it, like Greg said if someone started packing the guts of a Curve into the older casing it would be perfect. (and use some of the extra room for a massive battery, 16gb of flash, a real high quality speakerphone and a good AF camera!)

Yeah I agree, I'm not really looking for an ultra small device because the more cramped it gets, the harder it is to be productive on it and I simply won't use it as much or I'll use another phone.

Has anyone used the 7280/90? I remember using that one for quite some time back when I worked for AT&T Wireless (pre-merger). I know I really liked it but I don't remember any quirks or complaints with it. Would it be a viable phone today as opposed to like the 8700c? I know it didn't have Edge but again, I won't be doing any data.

I'm trying to decide between going back to that or an 8700c, which is a good bit more expensive. Or if there's something else that I'm forgetting that will work with AT&T, I'm up for suggestions...

Thanks!

When I worked for Rogers I had a 7290. It was indeed a solid device, but again I had issues with the voice quality. Very good battery life, mainly because it's only GPRS and has a very low quality screen. It also has very cheesy sounding monotone ringtones

Am I the only one who thinks the 81XX series is the most comfortable and best to use as both a phone and a data device? (Then again, half the time I'm either using the speakerphone or a BT headset so I rarely have to actually hold the device to my ear)

Well in my opinion the Pearl is WAY too small to be used as a data device. It's bad enough that it has the stupid suretype keyboard, but it's really tiny. I can't even type on that thing, and neither can a lot of people I know. I can type a text message on a T9 phone faster than I can type an e-mail on that.

Not to be a sexist, but to me the Pearl is a girl's Blackberry. Tiny and cute, and you can still get a discount on one from Rogers having to commit to a data plan. Definitely not for business purposes. A Blackberry should have a full QWERTY keyboard, no doubt about it.

Again, this is my opinion.

I just did the VZW OS upgrade to my 8830 and call quality has improved. Still a little bit of a hiss. I only wish I can force the BB to use 13K over EVRC, which is to CDMA like AMR-HR/AMR-FR is to GSM.

I absolutely love the pearl. It fits perfectly in a pocket and is overall very comfortable to hold against the face. I remember my parents having 7290s and I always thought it was oddly shaped for a phone. But I can understand the need for that fill keyboard. My next venture will probably be a curve, but I don't know how well that is going to work in a pocket.

I'm faster with SureType than I am with T9, iTap, or QWERTY, whether it's on an 81xx or a 71XX (right now, I'm using a 7130e on VZW). I'm not sure why you feel that the 81XX is too small to be used as a data device, or why you dislike SureType so much, but hey, different strokes, right?

I was equally as fast on suretype on my 7130 as i am on any of my fully qwerty berries. I liked the size of the 7130, I just felt like the 8700 was too big to hold against my face. The 8820 is a very nice compromise.

It's surprisingly pocketable, there's a little bit of a bulge but I kept my Curve in a pair of skin-tight stretch jeans and it's OK. My 8830 is just a tad bigger.

I've had a few Pearls, a Curve, an older 970(?) and a 950 but I have to say I truly like the Pearl. Once I got use to the Suretype all was good. I love the size to feature ratio. I only wish it had the 3.5mm jack.. soon with the 2 coming..

For email only I really liked the size and the keypad of the 950... The thing worked amazing and it was built like a tank.

Just my opinion..

Blackberry has certainly come a long way since the 950.

Some of the first RIM phones were pretty lousy phones. IMHO, they are now the best as far as RF goes.

Funny, my Curve had decent RF compared to a Moto V3xx. But my new 8830 rocks.

I loved the 8700c for the QWERTY keyboard, loved the Pearl for the size (suretype was fine too), and the 8800 was fantastic (my favorite out of my 'favorites,' ha ha).

The curve is not one of the first BB devices. Since about the 87xx and 71xx series, BBs have been excellent phones. I am taking about some of the first several models back about 5-6 years ago.

My 8700, 7130 and now 8820 all have excellent RF as well.
