A couple of HTC Cruise Questions

It's looks like the HTC Touch Cruise, formally the Polaris, introduction is upon us. The Cruise looks like the "nuts" for us GSM folks that don't need a keyboard or the added bulk a keyboard necessitates. I've been waiting to pull the trigger on a new device too long, and the Cruise will probably be it, assuming HTC doesn't have any plans for a GSM version of the Vogue, a.k.a CDMA Touch. I still have a couple of niggling questions about the Cruise:
  1. How is the screen backlit? Obviously I'm hoping for LED here. I've asked this question about several HTC mobile phones, but I never seem to get an answer.
  2. Does the A-GPS allow for standalone GPS? In other words, can I still use the GPS functionality when there's no network reception but there's good GPS signal strength?

Yes, it just takes longer to lock onto the satellites. And the data download for the A-GPS is good for 5 to 6 days normally, so you do not need network access every day.

So does that mean the HTC will not intentionally disable the GPS functionality when no cell network is available, as some carriers in the US have done?

Who knows....all I can say is that the sales of the device will severely drop if that is done. I'm looking forward to the Touch Cruise. I have a Verizon phone, but am looking for a phone-WM6-GPS-Wifi device, which VZW will likely take 2 years more to get! So I though I'd buy a Cruise, to be available end of November according to rumor, and get a pay as you go AT&T for voice, and I'm not worried about data as I don't plan to use it for 3G anyhow.

I'm just a little paranoid, having dealt with the US carrier cartel for too many years and having seen features disable or modified so that I could be charged for something that I new the phone was quite capable of doing out of the box.

But I have a question for you: isn't the Vogue, the Qualcomm MSM7500/CDMA version of the original Touch coming soon to Verizon? To be honest, I prefer the smaller form factor of the Touch compared to the Cruise, otherwise, if you don't need a digital compass or FM radio, they're pretty much identical.

Also, you might want to consider T-Mobiles ToGo service for voice: once you buy $100 worth of minutes, minutes never expire and you buy them only when you need them. I've been very happy using ToGo and as a result, my yearly cost for cell phone service went down 95% at the very least.
