Who Has Gone Back To "Normal" Phones...?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: davistld01

Who here has either abandoned the iPhone totally for whatever reason...and gone back to simpler, perhaps more reliable, regular "dumbphones"...or have at least stopped using the iPhone as their primary mobile phone?

Having had several iPhones...and four exchanges, plus getting myself involved in a situation involving iPhones that has left a bad taste in my mouth (whether justified or not...), I have become familiar again with "normal" mobile phones. The simplicity and consistant performance of the phones I have in my stable now make me wonder why I ever stepped into the smartphone arena to begin with 2-years ago...or why I thought that the iPhone was the greatest thing since pockets on a shirt!

I'm not saying that I won't give Apple another chance...either by going back to the current iPhone at some point (it is a cool phone) or by waiting on the Gen-2 iPhone (if there really is such a thing in the future)...but for now, I am pretty happy with coming full-circle back to where I started.

Anybody else out there in the same boat?

i just switched over to the BB 8320 curve. my only gripe with iphone is at&t lol other than i've had no problems with it

Posted by: thadoggfather

you know my feelings, I love the iPhone after using a bunch of Sony Ericssons, a Moto or two, and BlackBerry Curve.

Posted by: pts617

I am about ready to do the same thing. I think i'm going to go back to my old reliable nokia 6133. Don't get me wrong, I think the iphone is a very nice device but it just lacks some features that I currently need.

Posted by: gettygas

Going back to my Dash over the weekend...

Posted by: Astroboy-ATM

haven't touched my 4gig N95 since getting the iPhone. the Nok just feels like a cheap POS compared to the zero moving parts iPhone....the only thing i really miss, is the 5mp camera!

Posted by: ferniesp

I'll come out of retirment for this post only. Davis, I think you said it all with the reliability and keeping it simple. Feature wise, the Iphone cannot be beat but when it came to calling someone while driving, it became quite dangerous without voice dial. With no bluetooth headset, answering the phone was a real pain. A dumbphone like you describe has everything you really need for day in and day out usage. Calling with a razr like yours is simple, reliable with good call quality that was consistant. To sum it up, you are 100% spot on.

Posted by: bootycancer

Everytime I get a MMS sent to me, I want to. And being that I'm semi-surviving with an Iphone , I may just stick to dumbphones. The RAZR 2 is looking petty cool.

I'm almost embarrassed to be back to a Moto flip, especially a Razr...but the V9 is an extremely good phone. It's a keeper...

I'm going back to Symbian - I just can't get over how well laid out the UI is - and do you know what? As cool as the touch screen on the iPhone is, I really and I mean *REALLY* miss the tactile feel of a real phone. I think I'm going to have to pick up a nokia n81 8GB though - I think I've been spoiled by the huge amounts of storage that I can privy to with the iPhone. Anyhow - the iPhone is cool, but the novelty wore off really quick for me.

D.

Back to my BB 8820 and loving it.

T., If you hadn't put a "positive" spin on your argument, you might have almost sounded like Fernie . But I'm thinking of grabbing a Tilt or a K850i. I'll admit, the touchscreen has really spoiled me so I'm having a little difficulty

Really...?

I don't have that overwhelming need for attention.

Posted by: jhan1102

My iPhone broke so I'm using normal phone.

Someone shoot me =( Life is so hard without the iPhone.

Gonna go pick me up new one tomorrow.

Posted by: Arden

I cant really see myself going back to a regular phone.

I'm very much aware of that. Just a little jokey, joke...didn't mean to offend you. All in good fun.

there you go again pushing peoples buttons

Must just be the "meany" in me....How goes all Truth? To be honest, the N95 8gb is looking MIGHTY perty (yes, "perty") to me! Not sure if I want to shell out $600-700 though. I also like the Tilt and the K850i. Oh, decisions, decisions!

You're not a "meany"...just a woman. Most of us men are used to getting our buttons pushed by ya'll...(yes, "ya'll").

And...the N95 was a great phone, I just wish Nokia had done a higher level of engineering on the slider...and build components. Plus...I just am plain not "techy" enough to appreciate all the bells & whistles.

Anisoul...are you getting a k850i? Let me know how you like it.

Posted by: Anisoul

I'm thinking about. But then again, parting such sweet sorrow with the iPhone so I don't know as of yet. But I'm definately leaning towards it. I've always been a fan of SE's interface and speed. The turn-off for the N95 is the oh, so slow OS. Other than that, I think the N95 would have had me hooked.

Why do you have to part with the iPhone? Why not have both?

Posted by: scaredpoet

I'm one of those people that likes to switch phones every two to three months. Well, I can't say I really LIKE switching phones... my wallet certainly doesn't like it! But nonetheless, i ahve a tendency to get tired of a phone and then want to move on to the next one.

However, my iPhone has pretty much stopped that pattern in its tracks so far. I've had mine since July, and it's been three months. Despite a friend of mine recently picking up and N75 and an N95, and the new balckberries coming out... I'm just plain not interested.

When I got my iPhone, I kept my Blackjack and my Treo 750 around as backups, thinking there would be obvious times where I would feel the need to leave the iPhone at home and go with a WM device. But I've since sold the Blackjack. And I think the Treo is about to go on eBay. it's unlocked, so I'm sure it'll fetch a good price.

So no, I don't see myself going back to other phones anytime soon. And I've pondered the possibility that if, in the unlikely event Apple left the cell phone market, I might end up being one of those curmudgeonly guys I laugh at currently, who are desperately clinging to their TDMA handsets. There I might be, several years down the line, clutching my iPhone and annoyed that AT&T-Mobile is shutting down GSM in favor of 5G.

Posted by: cellularadict

I'm thinking of using a 6500c for normal phone use and keeping the iphone for web surfing on wifi, ipod, and calender type stuff.

I couldn't very well spend $600+ on a phone and not make an effort to sublet the cost. I always feel guilty about having $1,000+ worht of phones in my possession. But it's still very tentative.

I looked at tilt also, but i keep hearing all those lockups and freezes and i say no way, and with the the k850i i was interested to, but to pay same price as the n95 for a phone that dont do half as much to me is just crazy.

This thread does make one wonder that if you've in fact abandoned the iPhone, why the heck you're even poking around this forum. I'm struck by all the folks griping about the minuses of the phone yet it's usually one of the most viewed device sub forums at any given time. go figure.

as for me...i'm almost ready to buy one after flirting w/ a curve. if only they tweak it to c&p and record video, i'm there...but i digress.

Posted by: eclipxe

I tried the iPhone for a while but I had to switch back to my Helio Ocean:

-AT&T sucks in my area (dropped calls, horrible voice quality)
-Missed 3G and MMS too much
-Impossible to use while driving (even with hands-free bluetooth)
-Missed tactile feel of qwerty
-Unlimited minutes & messaging on Helio

I did get an iPod Touch though...that plus the Ocean makes for a great combo!

Posted by: x26

Mine went back for terrible call quality, etc.

I am waiting hopefully for iphone 2 though w/ 3g, gps and of course good call quality...

Posted by: x26

iphone has like really really like "Changed my Life"....

Posted by: ts

my self after 4 days. Nokia 8801. Only way I will ever get another phone that's not Nokia is if Apple steps their game up and stops using the general public as beta testers.

Perhaps it would be advantageous for you to fork over your hard-earned $399 + tax for an iPhone yourself before you question "why the heck" I'm "poking around this forum". Without the first-hand experience with the phone as backing for any comments you might make, either positive or negative...any territorial chest-thumping or any any points you might be trying to make are moot. Feel me?

I have abandoned the iPhone...for now, at least as my main source of communication. But...I am totally open to what might lie ahead in the next version. If the next incarnation of the iPhone is substantially more appealing to me...I will definately give another go.

Posted by: bootycancer

YEah...I'm on the brink of jumping the Iphone ship. I do like to hear of how any others are making out. I curious to know how much I'll miss it.

There has been some very good feeback so far, and some phones I might not have considered until this thread.

a week later went back to my v3xx. Ill try it again when they get 3g.

Posted by: gotanmp3

After living with the iPhone for awhile, a few things started to bug me:

1. The reception wasn't as good as my RAZR V3, and frequently went into "no service" at home.

2. It's nearly impossible to use the phone one-handed to dial or text.

3. The native 3rd party AIM clients on the iPhone don't work with the $5.99 T-Mobile plan, and the web-based eBuddy client isn't nearly as nice as the J2ME beta.

4. I missed being able to download free ringtones from the web.

5. As near as I can tell, the iPhone doesn't have the ability to automatically change ringer volume levels when docked, and then back when removed from the dock. Most Motorola phones will switch between "Ring & Vibrate" to "Loud", (which can be set to NOT be loud, ironically) and back, when they're plugged into a charger and removed, respectively. It's good if you don't want your phone making a ton of noise when one of your friends texts you at 3 in the AM.

6. Tethering - never bothered to go through that convoluted process to get it working (I really don't feel like having to reconfigure the Wi-Fi on both my laptop and my phone just to tether). Admittedly, there's almost nothing that works with the $5.99 T-MobileWeb that can't be done directly from the iPhone's browser anyway, but it did still annoy me that if I wanted to tether my laptop - I wouldn't be able to.

I really couldn't go back to the V3 after using the iPhone, and after reading that the V3xx has a full HTML browser built-in (like the RAZR2, only a lot less expensive), I decided to try one out at the AT&T store. Admittedly, the web browsing experience doesn't hold a candle to the iPhone, but the V3xx does have a very capable browser, even compared to the Sidekick (try loading grainger.com on a Sidekick), and with the beta of Opera Mini, it's even better. It's definitly not as graceful as the iPhone when you've gotta click, click, click, but the V3xx is incredibly responsive (the phone scrolls pages easily as fast as the iPhone) and it gets the job done. I've only had the phone a few days and already I've had someone mention to me they had no idea a "plain ol' RAZR" could do that.

Multimedia-wise, the V3xx is a bit of an ugly duckling compared to the iPhone, but seeing as how I already own an iPod (with enough music to fill a bat utility belt full of iPhones), I never bothered putting any music or videos on my iPhone in the first place.

I think if I went back to a normal phone I would be very bored with it. This phone provides hours of entertainment for me. Especially when I'm in my boring lectures, haha

Posted by: mbranscum

So quick question...if you have an iphone with iphone account, can you use the sim with a regular phone, say on the weekends? Like you can with other ATT accounts?

Nice post. I've gotta bolt VZW, contract lapsed in Aug. Was waiting for the Pearl 2 (zzzzzz) tried the T-mo Curve (wifi is nice but hotspot at home def NOT beta tested w/ all routers); so that leaves me w/ an interim phone and I hear all you're saying. Might just opt for a deal (looking for a good one) for a v3xx.

They doubled the RAM in the 8gb model. And I'm not looking forward to paying $750-800 for ANY cell phone.

Posted by: thraven233

Every time someone asks me if it can bluetooth, or sends me a picture message, I want to.

I've looked at some "dumbphones" on ebay. But, I couldn't imagine going back to a normal phone again. Maybe when I've had the iPhone longer, like maybe sometime next year, but for now I just couldn't do it. I'm sure I'll get tired of the iPhone sometime.

REALLY! I'll get the US Model then and save some bucks! I see you are from my neck of the woods, roughly (Levittown).

They certainly did double ram, and increased battery to 1200 mah! I get speeds around 1100kbs, and thats with the network at half capacity. The only reason to get the 8gb is if you have tmobile which has no 3g anyway. I have hard time buying an expensive phone to run only on gsm. All the same improvements were made for the att usa version too. You can get it for 580 dollars now if you search, which is a great deal. Battery life is very good, and if i lock it to gsm only its way better. Though i never take it off 3g.

So yeah i'm a pa native moved to cali and travel back and forth a lot. Btw, philly has prob the best att 3g network in the country right now. I'm so jealous everytime i go back there.:-) great speeds and coverage is stellar.
