Theoretical "what would happen if"

So I have pick your plan from cingular, because Im not wild about contracts. I have had a slvr, razr, rizr, and currently have a blackjack. They were all just slide in the sim and it works. I am buying an iphone and originaly I planned on unlocking it an usining it on my plan, which should have no issues. But today I read a post on another forum stating that if you buy the iphone and cannot get accepted for credit that att will offer a gophone option for the iphone. Does anyone have anymore information on this. I was wondering theoretically what would happen if I put in my ATT pick your plan sim? Or should I just go the unlocking route? thanks

Unlock it and be done. If your credit is so bad where you can't get a cell phone contract you need to not buy $300+ consumer electronics until you get it cleared up anyways.

Buy it, unlock it and use it on your current plan. Just don't upgrade the firmware right away and wait so you don't end up with a brick for a month while everyone is frantically waiting for the next jail break.

haha you didn't really answer my question, instead you told me I have bad credit, my credit is good enough to have an att contract. I do not want an att contract. I wan't to stay with pick your plan in case I want to leave att, Ive only been with them 4 months. does anyone have an actual answer to this question?

Always interesting to read judgmental posts. Not qualifying for post-paid is not always due to bad credit. One might have new credit. (New U.S. resident, recent graduate, etc.) One might have a hold on her/his credit report, which some systems equate to having no credit. (Requires manual intervention.) Those are two examples. There may be others.

I don't think it is necessary to unlock the iPhone if you're using an AT&T SIM. I believe an unlock is only necessary if you want to use a non-AT&T SIM. I believe one can "Jailbreak" the handset using tools, and then "activate" the handset with the AT&T SIM that is not specific to the iPhone. (Hence, no contract.) Unlike an unlock, this is completely reversible by restoring the firmware.

I have seen anecdotal posts that AT&T is checking for iPhone use on a non-iPhone data plan, and forcing a change. I have no experience on this, myself, so I cannot comment on that aspect.

Check out the unlock sub-forum for more information. There are, literally, plug-n-play solutions to activate.

You dont need to do either. You don't need to unlock the phone to use an AT&T (Or Cingular) SIM. And you don't need to go the GoPhone route.

Get the phone, jailbreak it and bypass activate it with your own SIM. I wouldn't recommend unlocking any phone that doesn't need to be. And yours doesn't need to be

So I think I understand what you are saying, the post above seems a little contradicting to yours so I just want to be straight. Ive watched the jailbreak video a bunch of times and confident I can do that. So just jailbreak w 1.1 take out the sim that came with it and put in my att sim? what about activation fees or what not? and I have a data and text messaging plan with the pick your plan will this effect anything? I mean I know Im safe if I go the unlocking route, no activation fee, jailbreak, I wount be able to upgrade my firmware but seems to be fine for most people, I just dont want to end up with a brick.... any suggestions are greatly apprechiated.... thanks guys

When you bypass activate (the method you use depends on the OS you're using - Mac or Windows) what you're basically doing is installing a file to the phone that makes it think it went through iTunes. There are no fees or other considerations. Your plan remains the same as you have it right now

The only caveat is (and this pertains to unlocked as well as bypass activated phones that are used on an AT&T account) that AT&T has been known to reset your plan to an iPhone plan when it sees the phone you have on the account (I'm not an AT&T employee so I don't know the particulars of just How they do but it seems that they have ways of telling what handset you have on a given SIM, whether activated through iTunes or not)

well that wouldnt be good. I wouldnt want to have my costs upgraded without my knowledge. Does anyone else have any other opinions/ suggestions on this issue, also there seem to be many unlocking options out there. I have been linked from many people to a two part youtube video instruction of how to do the unlock. is this still the preferred method of unlocking? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABh2WcmlLzQ thanks guys
