iPhone data plan & smartphones

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I've searched but I keep getting some runtime error on the forum here, so we'll see if a thread works better. I have an iphone and I want to get a blackjack or some other smartphone as a backup and for mms messages that I need every now and then. What smartphones could I look at that would use the same data plan as the iphones? Q, blackjack, treo? Any others?

Thanks.

That's a good question. I'm assuming you mean that you can swap the SIM to occasionally? I know the SIM will work in another phone but I don't know how (or if) the iPhone data/voice plan will handle MMS messages. My guess would be they'd be a part of your text message allotment?

Just curious, why does it have to be a smartphone or PDA? Why not a normal handset. They all do MMS and are a lot cheaper to purchase.

I just called AT&T (Your question raised my curiousity) and asked exactly what you just did

The answer I got (And you can confirm this for yourself to be sure) is that if you pop the iPhone SIM into another handset your iPhone SMS and data plan will cover any data or messages you use.

Basically, your iPhone can only use the SIM it is activated with but you can use then iPhone SIM in any other AT&T handset and your plan details will cover you.

The caveat is that Blackberry's use a specific data plan, to cover the push email and so on. So might want to stick with something like a Blackjack or lower end smartphone, or go with, as I suggested earlier, a traditional handset, like a Razr or something.

Ok, thanks for the info Red Setter. It doesn't have to be specifically a smartphone, I was just thinking that if I had a Q or another smartphone and wanted to use that and if it got damaged, no biggie versus my $600+ iphone. But you make a good point, a razr or any other phone with a camera would work. Thanks again, great to see a very helpful response.

NP. The question was one that I wanted an answer too

AT&T particularly is picky about their data plans. A Treo can't use a Blackberry plan, and vice versa. A non PDA or smartphone would probably be a safer bet since they use similar types of data.

I use the blackjack and the iphone in different times of the week, and both work just fine on voice, data, and texting. I can't get mms through the iphone data plan though. And when I get a voice mail, it sends me a text with some wierd ID code, im assuming because of the visual voicemail. But the data and all works just fine in a blackjack. fyi.

Same here, I sometimes use my iPhone sim in my Blackjack or N75 and Voice, Text & Data all work fine. However MMS does not work.

how do you get the sim card out of the iphone??

is popping out your SIM card from your iPhone supported by at&t? I thought that voided your warranty or something.

Is that a serious question? Of course you can take the SIM out. The users guide provided by apple shows you how! It is fully accessible without opening anything on the phone

yes I was serious. I'm sorry I didn't see that written but thanks.

I've been working on this for a couple weeks and here is what I did and my problems.

I have a tilt and wanted to use it and the iPhone depending on work and needing to have access to exchange email. I know I can log into exchange over the interweb on the iPhone but I don't get notifications that way. I also wanted to get MMS messages if I was using my Tilt and that would not work with the iPhone plan. So after talking to CS a week ago I determined with the help of a rep if I had CS put pay per use MMS on my plan it worked fine other than the wierd texts relating to voicemail it all worked. Well it did not, after a day or so the pay per use was automatically removed from my plan so back to the drawing board.

Then I just removed the iPhone plan and used the PDA data plan and I was good with VM and MMS and the only loss was visual VM which was no biggy to me.

Now my only issue is that I don't get voicemail notifications on my iPhone. I have heard doing a restore on the iPhone will fix the VM problem and give me the notifications back. Now my only problem is the I have a hacked iphone and I don't know if I do a restore will it force me to update to 1.1.1. Anyone know the answer to this?
