Stepping Stone to iPhone?

Is there a way to transition into AT&T and iPhone as follows:

My wife and I have a family plan with Verizon that expires in December. I would like to switch to AT&T but delay buying an iPhone until the new one is available (March or so?). Can we begin some kind of AT&T plan plus buy a couple of cheap phones and then move to iPhone later?

Thanks,

Sam

Yes. Why you think there is going to be a new iPhone at a certain time period is beyond me though.

My understanding is yes. Check the FAQ for the iPhone at AT&T's site here:

The part I'm talking about is listed below.

Q. I just upgraded my phone recently. Are there any penalties or restrictions for upgrading to iPhone right away?
A. No. Everyone can upgrade to iPhone right away, you just need to add an iPhone Data Plan (this may replace your current data plan but your voice plan will stay the same) and sign a new 2-year service contract. Discount eligibility for other devices will continue from the time of your current contract.

The rumor is that Apple will release either a updated version or a new version of the iPhone. The first I've read of it was in this forum here:

There will NOT be a new iPhone in March. If anything, the supply chain rumors are related to sub-notebook from Apple. The big upgrade for a new iPhone would be 3G and there aren't any 3G chips in the pipeline yet that will meet Steve's power requirements.

I'm glad you know more then market analyst experts. I'm sure the analyst is already aware of the sub-notebook rumors and knows what his contacts are referring to. How long have you been an Apple exec ?

Will there definitely be a iPhone 2 by March ? Maybe, maybe not. But there appears to be some leaks from suppliers of the iPhone. Stating there definitely won't be one is ridiculous.
