I know that if I reformat the mac, it will probably treat the iphone as a new undiscovered device right? Will I lost any contacts then?
Is there a way to store the iphone restore backup?

why not just open address book then hit "file > back up address book" then after you reformat hit revert to backup and use the file you saved.

Ok that works but there are more than just contacts. The settings and bookmarks etc how do i save those

Make a CD with all of your bookmarks (Safari can export bookmarks as an HTML file), an Address Book backup file, an iCal backup file, etc (or store those on a USB drive, whatever works for you).
Maybe the 'settings and other information' that get restored to the phone reside somewhere near the [username]/Library directory of your hard drive. I know the generic restore file resides in [username]/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates/, but I don't know where user-specific iPhone settings are stored.
If anything, you'd lose a few easily changable iPhone settings (such as the name of your phone as you have it in iTunes).
I'd say if you backup your entire iTunes library, that might help too. The settings might be there.
Good luck on the venture.
