Un-"at&t"-izing the Duo (C810)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Drait

Picked up my Duo today and so far it's a keeper. The only things that need to be resolved is fixing the inability to select MP3 ringtones (my HTC S710 with WM6 uses \My Documents\My Ringtones as a default folder; the C810 seems to be locked to \Windows and only lists the 10 provided ringtones), find a better task manager (the Pantech one is horrible to say the least), and to fix the ugly 3G icons (which I think some of the WM6 CABs for the 8525 will work).

If anyone out there can point me in the right direction for the ringtone issue, that would be appreciated. I'll post the icon CAB once I test it and it works.

Oh, and there's no useful Comm Manager on the Duo, just the 'Wireless Manager' which controls the phone radio and the bluetooth radio. There's no way (that I can see) to disable the 3G bands like you can on the 8525. Let's hope that BandSwitch works on the WM6 Standard platform.

I managed to work around the issue sort of. It definitely will require some thorough looking at by the WM experts, but for now you can do this:

- App unlock the phone (the SDA Unlocker seems to work fine)
- Edit HKCU\Control Panel\Sounds\RingTone0\Sound and put in a path and filename of the ringtone you want (MP3s work fine)

This obviously isn't the best or right way to do it, but since at&t decided to be all stupid about ringtone selection (e.g. forcing a revenue generating method instead) it seems to be a quick fix if you don't like the included 10 rings.

Posted by: ATT*Mark

im less than convinced at&t had anything to do with this , the tilt which is also a wm6 device is cake to add any ringtone you want. are you guys putting them in the ringtone directory?

Posted by: ivajos5

just try to put it on my document maybe will work. You do not need a ringtone directory to put ringtones on you phone.

Posted by: Drait

Tried both \My Documents and \Windows and it won't list anything but the 10 ROM-based rings that at&t provides.

Also, on the S710 (which is a WM6 Standard device as well) if you play a sound file with Windows Media 10, there's a menu option to select it as a ringtone. No such option on the Duo.

If I'm mistaken in blaming T for modifying the base functionality of WM6 Stnd then I am sorry, but it does not function the same way as other WM6 Stnd devices do, and it does not include software that it should (i.e. Internet Sharing). Obviously carriers are allowed to make changes to the ROMs prior to releasing devices, and I believe they took out things they feel were threatening to their business model. If someone can prove me wrong, then by all means please do as it'll make the device more useful.

The answer may be here, as seen on the Moto Q9:

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1267916

I'll try clipping the ringtones down and see if that makes a difference.

I just got my duo and really like it makes my 8525 feel like a brick. I was able to get my mp3 tones by copying them from my sd card and pasting them in application data/sounds.

Posted by: togles

Try this for the ringtone issue. Worked killer for me, just copied the mp3 into the app data \ sounds folder and set it as a ringtone using the normal method

For Windows Mobile 6, you have a 300kb ringtone size limit in place. To circumvent this using a registry editor:

Go into HKEY_Current User → ControlPanel → Sounds → FileSizeLimit (It’s a DWORD Value). Delete it. Go into your sounds menu, and you’ll be able to use your MP3 sounds that are in excess of 300kb.
MP3's as Ringtones

Using ActiveSync, drag/drop the *.mp3 file into the /Application Data/Sounds folder. Then, when you choose a custom ringtone for a contact, or go to Start/Settings/Sounds/Ringtone, the *.mp3 will show up in the list.

Another way is to place the *.mp3 in the /My Documents folder, and click on it to “set as” ringtone.

or upload your own ringtones to this sight(its free)
they then text it to you-
open it,
and your all set.

Any info loading ring tones tot he phone yet?

Posted by: theforest316

Any1 get around this and get any of their own ring tones loaded up?

Posted by: Drait

Aside from the size constraints that can be worked around as specified above, you just have to copy them to Application Data\Sounds directory, not \My Documents or \My Documents\My Ringtones like it is on other WM6 devices.

hey drait... how would you compare this to the s710 vox? it is nearly the same, but i beat around getting the s710 but like having the warranty thru att better. hows the build compare and any other differences...

back on topic tho, i was also able to add ringtones to the sounds folder in my docs and use them... but only as the phone ringtone. i want to use my own sounds for email, reminders, etc...

Basically, you need to install a smartphone registry editor to access the pathway in order to delete the filesize limitation for MP3s. If you never used a registry editor, find a friend that can help you because you can really jerk things up if you don't know what you are doing.

Posted by: Norcalz71

im familar with using a registry editor enough to feel comfortable doing it...but what program would you recommend to use? i tried to install the resco one but it wasnt having it? the duo does fall into "smartphone" category and not pocket pc, correct?

Posted by: Covi

I use PHM smartphone registry editor from http://www.phm.lu/Products/Smartphone/RegEdit/

Use the desktop installer, or copy the smartphone package cab to your phone and install it from there. Yep, the Duo is a smartphone.

Smart Toolkit isn't a registry editor, but it is an excellent application from http://www.e-natives.com/download

Get a 2 gig card and use Super from http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html to compress a few movies/music videos onto your phone also. I use 3GP conversion, but you can experiment with it.

Ya don't buy a Lamborghini just to drive slow

Posted by: freddyttt

hows the keypad for texting?

Posted by: Norcalz71

awesome thanks man that looks to be exactly what i was looking for.

freddy so far the keypad seems good, the delay between letters on the numpad seems a bit longer than my 2125, but the actualy qwerty keyboard is pretty easy for me to use. you need to hit the keys more with your finger tips to get a good positive click out of them as they sit low, but i have fairly slender hands i guess. one gripe is that there doesnt seem to be a strong spring in the qwerty keypad slide, so when its open there is a very slight amount of play between the screen and the pad.

Use the website ventones. It sends custom or selected ringtones right to your phone. I have the pantach duo and it works every time. it also works for other phone carriers.
Check it out.

Posted by: jimiyarb

I sent them via bluetooth from my old phone, they went straight into my docs and was able to use them.

Posted by: westknown

Posted by: wacktool

Hi my name is wacktool, im a cellphone junkie.... I had the IPhone, then went to the Tilt, and back to the Iphone. I'm thinking about jumping to the DUO, but havent seen any custom roms like i had with the Tilt. Are there in websites dedicated to the DUO? Also, what about custom roms?

Posted by: BadSpoiledBunny

OK I have read everything in here about getting custom ringtones... and I REALLY think I am about to kill this phone!!!!!
I finally had to cave in and get a new phone after having 2 smt5600 over the past couple of years... I got this DUO yesterday morning and was convinced I loved it... BUT now I have decided this phone must die!!
I have tried EVERYTHING... cut down songs.. placed it any and every where I could in the files... yelled at the phone calling it a huge POS and yet nothing works.

Hmm one of the THOSE type people I see....

Well I did manage to get my own ringtones on the phone BUT after playing with the phone a couple days I have decided the best thing to do is call AT&T and tell them what kind of worthless POS this phone is and that I need it replaced lol

There doesn't seem to be much in the way of ROMs so far, since the duo is not an HTC device.

Hi guys I work for pantech and if you guys need any help with the DUO or any sitution feel free to contact me I can help and for the ringtones IT DOES WORK here is a how to:

Each custom ring tone file must be no larger than 300KB and in .mp3 file format. Make sure those ring tones are in the My Ringtones folder when using the ActiveSync software. Your songs must be smaller than 300k and must end with the extension MP3.

Once this is set, you can copy the files into the Application Data/Sounds folder. You can access this by going to Start-My Stuff- hit the left soft key that is labeled Up. You'll see the Application Data folder from here.

1. Can I use an MP3 file as a ringtone or a custom ringtone?
Answer: Yes. The MP3 song must be smaller than 300KB in size. The MP3 must be on the Phone's Memory. For custom ringtone: The contact must be on the phone's memory - not on the SIM.

(Many customers will ask how to make an MP3 song that small. Of course we do not support this entire process, but we can point the customer to the right direction. See bottom for MP3 Editing)

2. MP3 Editing

3. Many customers will ask you how to get an MP3 file under 300KB. Part of the song must be exported to keep the file size down. This can easily be done with a free program called Audacity. It can be found here: audacity.sourceforge.net The MP3 Encoder called LAME will also be needed. It's simply a dll file which the program needs to encode the MP3. LAME MP3 dll can easily be found by "googling" this file lame_enc.dll. Try it yourself. Create an MP3 and copy it to a phone and add it to both the main ringtone and custom.

What's up. I do not know what this guy from Pantech is feeding everyone, but here is the fix.

http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/...thread.id=45818

This has been a problem on all phones with WM6. I have the BlkJk2 and my wife has the DUO. It is the same for both phones. Keep in mind that your phone MUST be App. unlocked and and you will need a reg. editor. Here is a link that will do what you need. My wifes and my ringtones are 4 to 5 Mb Good luck

DRAIT --> How did you get your PANTECH DUO to work with T-Mobile?

My daughter just got one which is unlocked. We have been trying to set it up for web and MMS access (she already has a $20/m data plan).

We have reading various posts and playing with the settings. Can you share yours?

To setup web access, create a new GPRS connection:

Start, Settings, Connections, GPRS. New connection.

call it T-mobile data (or whatever)
Connects to: the internet
Access point: wap.voicestream.net
everything else use blank/default values.

Back in connections menu: select Menu, Advanced.
In internet connection, select T-Mobile data (or whatever you called it) connection that you setup in GPRS connections.

That's all I had to do to get mine working on t-mobile data plan (the old $19.99 plan). My data, email and text messaging works fine. I did not go through the trouble of setting up MMS since I dont really use it. Look in t-mobile forums for instructions for setting these up.

The only problem is that every time I reset the phone, the default connection switches back to MediaNet, so I have to go back to Connections, Advanced and select T-Mobile data again. I mentioned in this thread that I was not able to resolve it, so hopefully someone will come up with a way to fix it.

Good luck, let us know if this works.
