How to transfer my number without incurring extra fees?

I'd like to cancel my service with Bell when it ends (end of December) but I have a few questions. I'd know I have to give 30 days notice so I'm not charged for an extra month. I'd also like to take my number with me to my new carrier.

I'm told that once you sign on with a new carrier and they transfer your number, that's effectively ends your contract. If I give my 30 days notice, do I automatically lose my number on that day? Or can I put in my notice, then 30 days later sign on with Rogers and keep my number?

Thanks.

1) Do NOT give notice to Bell before you leave. I've seen problems where the current carrier has initiated a cancellation, and then the customer tries to port the number. Better safe than sorry.

2) I don't know about other people, but when you port, the account is supposed to be cancelled immediately. None of my ported customers have had to pay an extra month, the 30 day policy is waived when a port is done. You'll just get a bill with charges up to the day the port was done, plus any cancellation fees that your old provider will charge for cancelling the contract. (ETF fees)

Thanks very much for that info.

The 30 days of charges after the port will not be waived. At least, it isn't suppose to be waived. It's really up to the rep you're speaking with, but its a completely legit charge.

What you should do, is call in and speak to a customer service rep, 30 days before you plan on porting out. If you want to port out on december 30th, then call at the end of november. Tell them you plan on porting your number to Rogers on december 30th. They wont put in a cancellation request, but it'll be in the memos stating that you called to give your 30 days notice. When you call in to customer service, they can't put in a cancellation request anyway, only the retention department can, so as long as the CS rep doesn't transfer you, you shouldn't have to worry about the cancellation request being put through.

At that point, you will still automatically get charged the 30 days of service after the port out, but you can call in at that point, and reference the rep you spoke to, and on what day, and as long as the memos state you gave 30 days notice, the rep you're speaking with shouldn't have a problem crediting back the charges.

MacD is correct. The 30 day charge is normally there if you just port out without warning Bell.

Make sure, when you call, to get the rep's name and/or operator number (they normally will just blurt out these things as fast as they can since they have to) incase they don't note it properly.

Are these charges the same as the regular monthly bill you used to pay or a "special fee"?

Currently I am paying $160 a month, no contract its MTM, would it make sense to switch my plan to the bare minimum plan that Bell has and then port over to Telus, that way I don't have to pay $160 for service I am not going to use?

Any Bell Gurus out there who can provide some advice please?

It's whatever your fixed monthly charges are. In your case, the $160. You'd be better off to lower down to the Mobile 20 plan, for a total of $29.70 (after saf/911) before having the other carrier cancel your bell services.

Great thanks for the info!
