T650 mini review and unboxing

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: augustborn99

ever since i heard that at&t was picking up the k850, i closed the books on sofia and looked at the t650.
i got it from phonesource. real customer service, reasonable prices, and package got in in 2 days.

being a lifelong SE user this review is geared to users who have had SEs in the past. my last phone was a w850.

in the box
datacable
manual + software
weighted deskstand charger (allows you to piggyback a headset)
256mb m2
hpm-71 earphones
nylon form fitting pouch

eyecandy:
sexiest to date (nuff' said). slim, hefty, no chance for the dreaded squeak, matte surface resists fingerprints. eyecatching when you have it in your ear. i have the deskstand charger set up in the living room just cause it looks slick docked. i know looks are subjective, but this is a head turner.

ergonomics:
i do 2000-3000 sms/mo. this phone texters' heaven. number keys are all nicely spaced, and has the same tactile feedback as t68/t610. the WAP access button is positioned beside the "back" button. not good. ive had a ton of accidental keypresses backing out.
phone is evenly balanced, the weight adds a sense of security in the hand. surface texture helps keep the phone in hand except if your hands are very dry-it becomes very slippery.
battery cover a little funky. the whole back fascia comes off to access, batt/sim/m2. only time will tell if it will be a problem.

GUI
typically responsive through the menus, no sms lag. icons seem to have updated a tiny bit. more "smooth/cartoony".
i noticed the the other 240x320 themes are not fully compatible. the highlights are shrunken lengthwise. 3 flashbased themes. one theme chages depending on the time of day and certain holidays
mediaplayer is stripped down. sort by artist, tracks and playlist.

screen
bright, very detailed, good color representation.

audio
all in all at par with the w850. adequate, and clear in both incoming and outgoing calls. speakerphone is adequate as well- my test is if the other party does not know theyre on speaker (it passed). same as with other SE's
music speaker is as loud as w850, no crackles, no hiss, no clipping. earbuds are good as well, "sounds whole".
all in all the music sounds the same as any other SE. i will not run it through a spectrum analyser, or a decibel meter. if it does not sound "tinny" or "thumpy", its all good in my book.

RF
same strength as w850 (which is my RF king) but seems to poll the tower slower than the w850. its still typical jumpy RF meter but can hold and make calls clearly on 1bar. typical SE.

camera
not quite a cybershot but will take good photographs for 4x6 prints. camera lag is around 2 secs shot-save. 8 scene settings. i'll leave the judgements to the eye of the beholder (see posted photos)

conclusion
the phone is a perfect example of brains and beauty. its perfect for someone looking for sleek understated elegance with good accompanying features. this phone screams "class"
-a good upgrade for someone with a 2mp phone.
-a good SE starter phone for someone looking to jump in the SE waters
-spec heads, the phone is not for you.
-for people with 3.2mp phone, the phone is purely a change of scenery as it will not bring anything new to the table.

yeah - that color combination is just killer - it just looks awesome

i wish the k850 came in that shell - thats just dead sexy

very nice...
tho I think the green is kinda girly for my taste

I think the Black one looks alot better

Am I to understand that TMobile does better with non 850 band phones in the US than AT&T?

But damn...thats still a nice phone. Hmm...standby screen clock? Camera quality doesn't seem to great, but that's probably because I'm comparing it to my K810...so guess that ain't fair. But yeah, I loved texting with the t610 back in the day...mastered it lol. But the k810 is pretty good in that department too. This sounds like a nice backup. So damn classy.

yes. tmo works fulltime 1900mhz whereas at&t uses 1900mhz only part time

nice looking phone, how is the camera compared to the w800i that you have? also, what about the battery performance? thanks.

Posted by: matthewf01

ummm how the hell does that desktop charger work? where's the charge port?

by the looks of it. on the side of the phone. I recall the w580i having the charging port on the side as well.

That's awesome looking desktop charger! What's the model number? I don' see anything on the se website.

Posted by: matthewf01

ah ha...
thanks it was hard to see in the first picture

looked like there was no connector at all...so then i was thinking something like "sony ericsson developed a 'contact' charging system where the back support part has (what looked like) metal contacts, and it charges by touching the metal back of the phone!"
crazy.

Wirelessly posted (Opera/8.01 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/3.1.9080/1716; en; U; ssr))

Now that you mentioned that,it almost tricked me too.
lol

Thanks for the pics and review. I've been reading up on it and some people are complaining that the paint on the navigation buttons is peeling off. Do you see any sign of it? And could you show us some pictures of the light thats on the back of the phone?

great looking phone and cool stand.

personally, unless you use fingernails to navigate the d-pad, i dont forsee the paint peeling off.

-re: light- its a single LED that bursts when a pic is taken. nothing special. you can see the LED in one of the pictures above.

also, battery performance of w800i also better?

Ok as this WILL be my next phone replacing my defective W910i, and without starting a poll, what color?

The green is nice, but so is the blue. Hmm....

That deskstand is so cool. I wish more phones would have these accessory...if not in the box, at least make them available for us to buy -

Meh. Too impatient to wait. Looks like the dark blue one's in my future. As well as TMobile. Bye bye AT&T.

Oh I didn't mean the flash. I meant the light between the silver part and the green part of the phone. Take a look at this if you don't know what I mean.

-w800 takes clearer/sharper photos. battery life just as excellent as the w800. t650 has 930mAh the w800 has 900mAh

^^ whoa that's pretty neat.. only if the phone was black with the red

Posted by: augustborn99

what i mean by "piggyback"-ing. the charger allows you to plug in another fastport behind it, thus allowing to charge the phone and play music at the same time

Posted by: phattbam

^ every time I see that green, I think of mint chocolate chip.. not sure why.. Andes Chocolates, ice cream

Posted by: break-r

Very nice looking phone

If I were to ever get this, the small 1.9" screen would be so hard to get used to after the 2.4" on the w910

Thank you for that. Not owning a T650, have always wondered how to listen e.g. to radio while charging and now I got the answer (without even asking).

Wow. Just got my T650i and it's freakin' gorgeous. Hands down the nicest SE I've had to date. I'll post a mini review and more pics later tonight.

Well it works, unlike my crashing W910i.

I like it. I'm not too concerned about the screen size as I'm not a heavy web surfer.

does that theme work for all 240x320 SE phones?

i dont think so. the variable .swf file is imbedded in the phone itself and is triggered by the theme

Posted by: Paul in SoCal

So far I must say this is a great phone. Reception is top notch. Ear volume better than my K790a. The buttons are great to text with. In fact thus far they're the best buttons I've used on any SE phone I've had. The screen, albeit small, is very bright and gets brighter automatically based on the light outside. I'll take some pics with the camera and post them tomorrow.

Very nice phone.

the whole thing shoudl be the brushed metal

Posted by: raj2k

I have a question for the owners, since the sar rating is 1.8, which is quite high, since legally in north america it cannot go past 1.6, Question is does the earpiece get really hot after a 10 or 20 minute call? I have used some sony ericssons that get really hot after a short usage, examples W810i and W880i.

Posted by: Paul in SoCal

Wow 1.8 is troubling, if not ridiculous. Mine does not get hot. The reception is great. I guess I know why now. The only issue I really have is the keypad illumination is way too bright. Maybe that's the radiation bleeding through.

After digging around I think the level is more like 1.45, which is still too high. For comparison the W910i is .90 and the K790a is .58.

Posted by: aboyd1103

Well, believe it or not, the paint peeling issue is real. Only mildly, and just on the edge of the D-pad, but it's there. And it's crummy. I have seen replacement keypads for sale... Anyone have any thoughts as to how to take the phone apart if you wanted to replace the keypad? Maybe I'm nuts to even consider? Or maybe it's easier than I think?

Otherwise - I LOVE THIS PHONE.

Anyone else have thoughts on taking it apart, though?

Have you taken the back off to see if any screws are visible?

BTW...is your keypad backlight super bright? Mine is almost flashlight strong. The only negative I have about the phone other than the screaming high SARS rating.

actually there are 2 different ways of measuring sar rating, north american and a european one. So the that 1.45 is the european way of measuring, and the 1.8 is the north american way. It is how the radiation is absorbed, through a certain amount of area.

Regardless both numbers are way high. So much so I wonder about keeping the phone. Maybe overreacting but...

That sucks...Looking at the pics of the black version, i noticed the d-pad isnt painted like the blue and green versions, which would help a lot.

Could any of you with a T650 do me a favor and go into the service menu, and read off the voice codecs installed on the phone. I'm curious if they come with both AMR codecs, or only EFR/FR/HR.

AMR_HR HR

Maybe so. Sure is a damn nice phone regardless.

^^ +1 (and then some)

Posted by: Paul in SoCal

One thing I will say about this phone is hands down it has the beast ear piece volume of any SE phone I've owned. In fact I've had to turn it down a notch.

Posted by: Amras

I just got my K770i. Was to get T650i btw.
Nice phone though. I think it shares lots of similarity with K770i. I notice the screen is the same. The GUI is also the same. And I notice that QVGA themes won't fit properly on both phones since it's a little bit different in highlight size and pop up window size. But I edited the themes with theme creator, and now it fits perfectly.

Anyway have you noticed that the font size is a little bit fatter? And I like it! As you mentioned, it has the feeling of cartoony.

About the screen... the white color reproduction/representation is a bit yellowish, right? I notice it when compare it to my S500i and K800i side by side. I don't really understand why this display has a really bad white color when the other colors are really vibrant and perfect.

I haven't noticed the white/yellow issue. Does the K770i have mineral glass as well? Wonder if that is the issue.

It's not really an issue. But since I'm quite concern about display, and I compare it to my previous SE phones, it becomes very obvious to see the yellowish white color. It's pretty yellowish, not just "a bit yellowish".

S500i (left) - K770i

Only the white colors. Coz the other colors reproduction is superb.

I don't really understand the meaning of mineral glass btw. Can you explain more please?

The T650i uses mineral glass for the display and lens cover which is scratch resistant. I don't know if it's the only SE model with it, however.

Posted by: Amras

I don't really know about the mineral glass. I think it's the same with K770i. S500i/W910i doesn't have any glass btw.

I had this handset in blue a few weeks ago and the paint on the d-pad did peel ( within 3 days of buying it ! ) , I was concerned that if a little paint had peeled after just a few days , what is it going to look like in a few months ? I took it back and exchanged it for something else , real shame as I loved all other aspects of it. Maybe I was just unlucky ...

That is a shame. I've not experienced that. Like an idiot I did dig my nail into it to see if I could dent it. Could be a bad batch here and there. I'm sure someone will attempt the face plate replacement as it doesn't look too hard to do imo.

-no yellow here.my whites are white. perhaps your handset just has a "warmer" color representation (slightly redder/yellower hue)
.
-mineral glass is exactly what it is. the screen is made out of scratch resistant glass (much like wrist watches). ontly the T650, and the K850 have this

-i have mine for over a week. like i said before, i'd have to go out of my way to scratch the paint off. perhaps you use your fingernails to use the d-pad? why dont you just continue to peel off the rest so it looks all silver intead?

Hey what part of North America are you from if you don't mind me asking? I was curious how your inside reception has been and your internet connection. I've only experienced poor reception here in Albuquerque in one part of a shopping mall. In an elevator my RF went to no bars and red yet I was able to still talk. And internet seems to be fine, expect for trying to watch vids on youtube. Works flawlessly on my K790a but a tad slow in loading on the T650i. Do you know if he blue triangle above the RF meter is GPRS or edge?

-im from the east coast, NJ to be exact. as far as RF, it is one of my best. it powers through my usual deadspots easily. ive leaned to ignore SE's RF meter. as long as i am able to make and hold calls, ill be happy.
-as far as you tube, my vids dont even load. perhaps its my tmo tzones basic (3.99 unlimited). miniopera funs fast and flawless though.
-blue triangle means GPRS signal. white triangle means no GPRS service

Well I'll most likely regret this but I returned my T650i. I found myself using my K790a more than I did the T650i, and while it's cool, I can't justify keeping it. Let alone 1.5 SARS rate is ridiculously high. I've looked for a replacement for the K790a, and after returning four phones, there simply isn't one. It's arguably the best phone SE has produced thus far. IMO of course.

I'm really sad to hear that. I love my t650i. The SARS rate was really the deciding factor? What about the K810 as opposed to the K790a? Isn't it "the same" phone in a more compact model? What else have you given up on and why is the K790 irreplaceable? I just haven't found anything in a LONG time that I like nearly as much as the t650i.

The camera and standby clock are the selling points fro me. Great RF and great screen to boot. The high SARS level really wasn't a major factor. But the K790a is only .56 compared to 1.5 on the T650i.

I thought so, but unfortunately the warmer feeling is way over so that it makes the "unclear" feeling when seeing pics with white color on it.

About the mineral glass, I don't think K770i use the same material. It's without any glass anyway, just like S500i/W580i and most of newest Nokias/Motorolas/Samsungs.

@Paul in SoCal: sad to hear, but i wouldnt argue with your decision as i believe the k800 series are more fundamentally sound than the T650.
i am perfectly at ease with my t650 as it is the perfect balance of beauty and features. after tolerating SE's mediocre build quality it is so nice the hold a phone that truly feels premium (even the accompanied accessories).

i noticed the pictures of the latest SE'S 3.2mp cameras(post k800) are a tad underexposed. i found that manually adjusting the white balance to -0.3 compensates for the underexposure:

normal exposure (0)

adjusted whitebalance (-0.3)

adjusted whitebalance (-0.7)

Those pictures ALL look great to me! I do see the slight difference in them though - but I'd be happy with any of them.

On an unrelated note, look at what I found on ebay.co.uk's web site just now:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....em=190170267045
a fake t650 - and sooo obvious too. Check out the pictures in the listing.. lol!
At least the seller marketed it as 'not original' or something...

It's arguably the best phone SE has produced thus far. IMO of course.

Maybe I missed it but did ever consider the K850i yet?

You need to have an exterminator handy when you're using that phone... cause its full of bugs! ohh snap!

I'm sure they'll be ironed out within the next couple firmware releases. I can't wait to buy mine. I wish they made it as attractive as the T650i and still made it as functional as it really is.

I really agree!
It happens with my K770i too.
Sometimes I even have to decrease the EV down to -0.7.

BTW.. if you take the pics in normal EV, you can just simply retouch with your Photoshop. Just a click with "Auto Levels". Voila! It's magic.

Hey I have a Martin Fields screen protector unopened for the T650i should anyone want it. Just $5 for s&h charges.

was that question directed at the screen protector? or just in general? If you should drop your phone the only thing that might help it would be those full plastic shells(clear protector casings).

Posted by: SBS_Transit

haha it was a general question, any of u guys dropped your phone before ? how is it

Posted by: augustborn99

i take xtra precautions not to drop it. but if it drops, its sure to dent. if you kick it, the brushed metal would scratch and be noticeable. at least the screen would be scratch free though those circumstances

A really good phone. I like everything about it. One small niggle is that the handset is quite slippery & one needs to be extra careful when handling it.

The Camera is Amazing, It's Easy to Use & the Memory Card Allows You To Have as Many Songs As You Want [I Have 2GB Currently, I am Sure I'll Upgrade =]

Would DEFINATELY recommend!

My first T650 had a defective camera so I was sent a replacement. So ATM I have 2 T650's in my hands. The first had really great whites. The 2nd replacements is a bit on the yellowish side. Not horribly yellow, but you can tell there is a difference, especially when you hold them side by side.

Also, if you compare the T650's screen to another phone, you need to remember that the phone uses an ambient light sensor to adjust the backlighting strength. If you set a T650 and a K800 side by side indoors, the K800 will probably be running at full brightness while the T650 will be on minimum. You need to place both under a bright light, or shine a flashlight on the sensor to really be able to compare both equally.

EDIT: Another odd thing I noticed is that my 1st phone seemed to be heavier than my 2nd replacement. The difference was very slight, yet the 1st felt heavier and thus felt better to me. I thought I was just going crazy, but I ended up putting both on my electric scale. Sure enough, the 1st one weighs 2g more than the 2nd. I'm not even sure if thats enough weight for me to feel, but there is a difference. Should there even be that much variation in weight from phone to phone?
