Q9 vs Blackberry vs Canada

Just picked up an AT&T Q9. I'm a veteran Q user, albeit of the Verizon variety. Sometime back I picked up an AT&T Blackberry Curve. Not nearly as sexy as WM (well some people hate WM) but it's solid and, though not particularly attractive, the interface is great.

My question involves my travels to Canada. Because Canada plays by its own rules, you need to prefix a 1 before dialing a U.S. number with area code. This is a major PITA on my VZW Q because none of the five hundred numbers I have in Outlook have 1s before them. (Yes, I know I can change that.) The Blackberry has "smartdialing" that can be set to know how many digits to dial or prefix depending on where you are.

The thing is, without adjusting the AT&T Blackberry, it seems to work fine in Canada without any additional settings.

So I suppose my question is, is this AT&T or Blackberry specific? If I take my Q9 up to Canada will I be harrassed (in a Canadian accent no less) to dial a 1 first? Though I try to avoid long stays in Canada, it happens. If it's the BB that's working it's magic, it'll be a another point on the plus chart. If it's just being on AT&T that eliminates the need for the 1, then the score is even on that point.

I'm asking here because there are a lot of U.S. AT&T users and some of you have probably taken your phones up north. Did you have the "1" problem or not?
