Slight twist on Data Plan Choice, unbranded phones, and IMEI

So, I might or might not be one of the folks using a BJ with the Media Max plan.

In light of all the recent discussion concerning audits and "sweeps," I've decided to use the new "scare" as an excuse to get another device.

This time around though, I want to get an unbranded device, something that I can use on the ATT network with the data plan of my choosing. I see some of you have "unknown devices" according to ATTs network and seem to be happy with this option.

My question is this - I *like* the 8525, but that gets me right back to where I started with the BJ. However, what if I was to get an unbranded version, like the Dopod 838pro? I realize it's virtually the same device, but since it wasn't sold by ATT, will they recognize it as an 8525, or will it be "unknown" to them?

To make it perfectly clear, this time I want to be "unknown." Will the Dopod do this for me?

And in case that it won't...anyone have any suggestions for a QWERTY smartphone that has WM6, HSPDA, WiFi, and maybe GPS? (Other than Ubiqio 501, HTC S630/Dopod C730)

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure it would be unknown.

I use the unlocked/unbranded version of the SE w810i, and my phone is "unknown" to them as well, even though they have branded versions of it that they used to sell.

Thanks for the reply.

So it seems that they only know the devices that have IMEIs which they have sold?

Thanks!

My Dopod C730 shows up as unknown. I would assume any non AT&T phone would show up that way.
