Pantech Duo Tips, Mods, Hacks, etc

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: iJITSU

Figured instead of having many threads with questions or suggestions re: the Duo, I'd start a thread for tips, questions, etc.

I'll start with a question: On the Blackjack there were two executables in the Windows folder, AdminSettings.exe and BandSelect.exe that you could create a shortcut to and then force the phone into GSM or WCDMA. I can't find these settings on the Duo. Anyone know what settings in the Duo or WM6 that allow you to do this?

Hopefully this thread will pick up once people get their hands on the phone.

anybody know what 'turbo mode' does exactly? I'm not sure I really notice any speed difference with it on vs. with it off.

Auto Lock: you can set the phone to automatically lock after the slide (keypad or keyboard) is closed and the screen goes off. To unlock, you just have to press the Unlock button and do not have to slide the keypad out and press the * key, or you can just open the keypad/keyboard and it will unlock.

Posted by: taveanator

I mentioned in a previous post that slingplayer doesn't work - it actually does. Just don't start it in landscape mode (IE- don't slide the keyboard out before or while you are using the slingbox application). Sling player actually works very well on this phone - esp. in turbo mode; changes from portrait to landscape mode pretty quickly.

If you want to disconnect your data connection completely (GPRS/EDGE or 3G) you can edit these keys in the registry and pressing the Red hangup key will detach you:

HKLM
-->Comm
\-->ConnMgr
\-->Planner
\-->Settings
\-->SuspendResume

Delete the ~GPRS! value and restart the phone.

The Duo needs to be app-unlocked first before you can make this change.

Posted by: vulcan10

Anyone else have any good tips? Anyone found a way to turn off the 3g yet? Or maybe changing the font & icon size?

Posted by: taveanator

yea, what's up with the interest in this phone? I guess it's just not catching on? I've gotten used to it but in all honesty I may just return it and get the BJII if there are no people with skillz out there who can help out us n00b Duo owners! ;-)

Has anyone had any luck with Pairing the DUO with any other devices ?

I have a Nokia N800 Tablet and have had no problems pairing it with my previous 2 phones, but for some reason I cannot get the DUO to pair up. I have tried all sorts of settings and looked high and low on the net for any help to no evail.

It seems to pair momentarily then it loses connection almost immeadiately after pairing with the tablet, almost as if the DUO is timing out the BT connection for some reason.

Wow everyone was waiting for this phone and now, nothing ? I picked up this phone for my wife, since she didnt like the curve, gettting the GPS for it and installing my beloved TOMTOM on it

Since I only had Windows Mobile PDA devices (touch screen) I`m looking for some ideas, software and tricks. Got it yesterday seems like a nice device so far.

I hear ya. I'd like to see someone also change to font/icon appearance. Change the theme like what I did on my iphone. I finally did figure out how to add ringtone on this thing.

Posted by: iJITSU

There are plenty of themes available on line that will completely change the homescreen text/appearance/colors. Chaning the icons, I'm not sure.

iJITSU, can I use WM 5 theme on my Duo (which is WM6)? I can't find any WM6 theme online, alot of PocketPC or WM 5.

Posted by: iJITSU

Good point. In general, yes they would work, but I'm not sure if they would handle the switching from portrait to landscape. I loaded some color themes but I don't remember loading a WM5 homescreen.

Does any one know how to reasign buttons on this thing ? Or remove proxy ? Every time I do it comes back after reboot and gmail app doesn work, also google maps my location doesnt work whats up with that ?

Posted by: vulcan10

I was reading on another forum that the Google Maps My Location has a lot of bugs to work out of it. One suggestion was that before the system would even work for you a GPS enabled device needed to be connected to the network first and be in the area. Sounds crazy, but I think the point is alot of devices are having trouble with the GM My Location.

As far as the button think, I cannot be much help. I've not gotten into reasigning buttons yet. You might need to add a third part application for button asignment. Not that I'm one to point to other forums for reveiw, but here Smart Phone Thoughts Forum is a good post about button assignment. It might help.

Thanks for your help. I gata say the navigation on this thing is terrible, tomtom works, but I guess the design is for a touch screen so alot of things dont work (this is why I need button reassignment there is a program called fakecursor that simulate touch screen) and another program Route 66 it just sits there on calculating. Thanks for your help

Posted by: oceanman

I figured out how to answer a call on the Duo by sliding it (actually my wife figured it out but wouldn't tell me so I looked and figured it out myself). Start>Settings>Call Options>Any key answer (check this feature) >Done.

Apparently, the slide up is "any key" and will answer the call. Haven't figured out if it is possible to end a call by sliding but still trying.

Yozh,
Are you using the TomTom for Smartphone or are you using the one for a Pocket PC? I would have thought the Smartphone version would be more geared to menus.

does anybody know how to add tones to this phone for voicemail and text messages?

I use to have the HTC Wizard (wm5) .. and all I had to do was drop .wav files in the windows folder and it would show up.

but I can't get it to work on here.. I did figure out how to add mp3 tones.. you just have to make sure they're under 300kb in size.. so I have that part working fine. but I'd like to also have custom tones for new voicemails.. and text messages.

Posted by: ezkim0x

nevermind i figured it out.

you have to have the registry editor and can change the filesize and add more tones as well.

Search for SDAUnlock on the web and application unlock your phone.
Connect your phone to your PC, via ActiveSync go to My Device/windows/smart menu and delete or rearrage the icons or folders as you like.
Reboot your phone.

Also, if you want to arrange icons in the start menu into a specific order, use a regsitry editor and go to HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Shell/StartMenu and then select Values. You'll see Order. Select it and you'll see the current order of your icons. You can add, delete etc. However, make sure you leave to lines below your last entry (by this I mean you have to have two "enters" after the last icon listed or it will jack your start screen).

I had a quick question...I was thinking about purchasing this phone but wanted to know if I needed to have a data plan like you do with the iphone or tilt. Thanks

Posted by: ezkim0x

You do.

You purchase a data plan through your service provider.

You don't have to have a data plan to use the phone, but you do need one to get the most out of its many features, also you need a PDA/Unlimited Messaging Plan to get the rebate.

Check out: DuoSTT. It does exactly what you want.

DL now, thank you very much for this app ZenD, this is exactly what we've needed for this phone, and to why this wasn't already an option for the phone who knows..

To add a "silent" shutter sound option to the camera:
Create a 0-byte file (e.g. silent.wav) and place in \Windows\ShutterSounds
To remove the sound played when connecting the data or charging cable:
Create a 0-byte file called "Charger_in.wav" and overwrite the existing file in \Windows
To remove the sound played when disconnecting the data or charging cable:
Create a 0-byte file called "Charger_out.wav" and overwrite the existing file in \Windows
To disable the startup animation/sound:
In the registry, delete the "Dll" value: HKLM\System\Startup\1\Dll

To disable the stock "Mobile Operator" splash screen that is shown instead, create a 0-byte file called "carrier_splash.png" and overwrite the existing file in \Windows
To disable the shutdown animation/sound:
In the registry, delete the "Dll" value: HKLM\System\Shutdown\1\Dll

To disable the stock "Mobile Operator" shutdown screen that is shown instead, create a 0-byte file called "carrier_shutdown.png" and overwrite the existing file in \Windows

I'm pretty sure the phone must be application unlocked to overwrite any of the system files above.

Posted by: VetteXP

Prevent the creation of the MEdia Net connection and proxy at each boot:
In the registry, delete the "Launch98" value: HKLM\init\Launch98

Useful if you're on AT&T blue or T-Mobile, for example.

I remember when I had the treo 650 they released something that made the voice quality better.

I'm wondering if there's been anything like that yet for the pantech duo? my friends say they can hear me fine.. but with certain people I can barely understand what they're saying. on my previous phone (htc wizard) I could understand them fine.

so it's definitely the phone.

To edit MMS server settings:
1. Go to Messaging, and Compose a New Multimedia Message
2. Menu/Options/Multimedia Msg. Options
3. Select the Profile to bring up the various settings. (MMSC URL, Gateway/Proxy, etc.)

In going through countless WM6 registry hacks, I experimented with this one that allows you to REPROGRAM the Quick List button below the navigation button (also the Lock button if you hold it) although now it is more difficult to change to a different profile like "Silent" or "Vibrate". Anyway, to reassign this button, change the key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Rai\:M SQuickApp\1

It is originally set with "quickapp.exe" which can be changed to for instance Task Manager "\windows\task.exe" or any other application you want to launch with a single button.

Posted by: ezkim0x

another question...

is it possible to setup voice calls on the pantech duo?

you hold down the record button and say the name of the person you want to call?

maybe a 3rd party app for this.. cause it can record your voice.. but it doesn't seem to have this option like my past wm phones.

Posted by: iJITSU

The Duo had MS Voice Command preloaded so yes you can voice dial as well as launch apps, play media, etc. It's in a folder somewhere.

Posted by: ezkim0x

hmm.. i'll take a look.

on the other ones it was an option to add a voice tag in the contacts.

Posted by: ezkim0x

nm.. I figured it out. you don't even add voice tags you just say..

"call name" and it does it.

weird.

Posted by: hankster1

My brother has a Moto Q and he suggested I try this on my girls Duo. So I did its a little program called Pocket X photo contact pro. It is a contact application that looks cool if you have photos for your contacts. It supposed to have favorites displayed on the today screen but I have not gotten it to work as of yet on the Duo. Allthough is has a menu on the today screen for recent calls with the contacts photo on home screen. It also provides a nicer look for your contacts as the default one can look messy with sim contacts and phone contacts being redundent. Try it out, its not perfect but its a start. I have tried several applications I downloaded from the xda-developers.com forum with no luck as of yet. I myself have an HTC Hermes that I play with and think once this Duo thing kicks off it should be fun. I tried to upload a copy but file too large if you email me I will be happy to get it for you.

Define "nothing." You can't find the Windows folder or what is the issue?

Posted by: pdxrealtor

Yes, that is THE major issue, I can't find the windows folder using active sync. I want to copy the internet shareing file to my start menu for easy access.

Also I would like to re-arrange the start menu for easy access to the programs I use the most.

Thanks for your help.....

Posted by: pdxrealtor

Can anyone help?

Posted by: pdxrealtor

Never mind, got it figured out. If anyone has the same prob. there are two folder settings in Vista that need to be changed. One is "allow hidden files to be seen" ,and the other is "hide protected operating system files (reccomended)".

Hope this helps someone!

Posted by: pdxrealtor

Actually, everytime I move the Internet sharing app into my start menu, it disappears after I use it once, or restart. Everything else stays where I put it.

Any ideas??

Posted by: pdxrealtor

Is this thread still alive??

Posted by: VetteXP

Like many WM6 phones, the Pantech duo ships with what most consider non-optimal A2DP settings. To correct this:
In the registry, add the following DWORD value: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Bluetooth\A2DP\Settings\Us eJointStereo = DWORD(00000001)

Also in the registry, delete the "MaxSupportedBitPool" value: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Bluetooth\A2DP\Settings\Ma xSupportedBitPool

*EXPERIMENTAL*

The stock AT&T ROM does not include SDHC support. To enable support for SDHC (to use a microSDHC card), install the SDHC.cab located within SDHC_WM6WM5.zip attached to the first post here:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=344338

As far as I can tell, this is working with my new 6GB Sandisk microSDHC.

Do you know of any way to remove the sound the phone makes when placing a call? I hate hearing that beep sound after I hit the green call button. I think the sound is shortbeep.wav. I tried to overwrite the file with an empty .wav but it's saying I don't have permission to.

If you can't overwrite the WAV file, you might try disabling it via the registry.

In HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\Dialing, the value Sound = "callStart.wav" . Change it to "*none*"

Nope, same problem. Other threads on other forums reporting the same thing. I don't see a CLSID anywhere for it.

If you're referring to a Google Search plugin on the home screen (which isn't device-specific):

On the device, go to http://mobile.google.com and install Google Search.

Are you saying you have actually done that on your pantech or just repeating what you see on the forums. Most of us have already tried that and the new version for a smartphone does not work at least for many who have been posting. Again, there is no CLSID anywhere for windows to see. Program downloads to the phone but that's it. Windows homescreens do not see it, nor does my Facade program see it. It sees all other plugins with no problem.

There is an update on pantechusa.com that updates the radio. made my call quality considerably better. It's a reflash though. so it wipes all your settings.

I am a noob to this phone, but have done plenty of hacking and updating of ROM's, registry editing, etc. on my Tmob wing. I have a Pantech Duo for my wife, trying to do some modding, starting with either Total Commander or Resco or even Registry editor. I cannot get anything to install. the phone says "Installation of ***.cab was not succesful. The installation file was not intended for this device.

Can someone please help me? I am hoping to clean up her Today screen and install threaded texting.

Thanks - I still have no luck. Did you go to google mobile from your phone and download? Or how about this - can you give us the CLSID code for it?

After installing Google Mobile Search, it created a copy of my homescreen layout, with the filename "google_adapted.home.xml". Here's the section that was inserted:
Code:
<plugin clsid="{A5CE7B87-DC8C-474d-855A-270DEB26515A}" name="Google Search" height="15" autoheight="true"> <background> <format bgcolor="COLOR_HOMEHIGHLIGHT" state="selected"/> </background> </plugin>

Thanks, it never created the new google home page for some reason, thus the problem. I added the CLSID you provided to my Facade homepage, it indeed now shows up, and works correctly.

Hey i had the same problem but i just solved it.
Go to at&t music then go into windows media player.
Click menu (right soft button) and go to Playback it should be number 1 on the list.
Uncheck the box that says pause playback while using another program and ur problem will be fixed

I went in the live chat on at&t and asked a rep.. and they said it wouldn't be released on their site until Q4.

That's what I'm in the market for. I'm looking for any leaks as we speak.

Hello everyone,

I recently purchased the Pantech duo and find it to be a good phone. The only problem is that when I miss a call or text message or even have a voice mail the phone does not beep or tell you that you have a message. It's really annoying actually so I found a program that was suppose to do this for you. Some of you might have heard of it! It's called DontForget. The problem i'm having now is my phone is telling me that its not a valid CE Application. I've heard that I may have to Unlock the applications on my phone somehow, if anyone could give me some suggestions on what to do or even know how to solve this problem that would be great.

Posted by: lolper

yeah i have that same problem is there a way to have a warning beep for missed calls?

Posted by: iJITSU

there is a program called "Don't Forget" that is availabe for purchase.

Hey has anybody else tried smarttoolskit yet. if this has been asked please excuse me. I have used it and it makes the phone way more user friendly.

This forum is great. Helped me a lot with customizing my Duo. Does anyone know the CLSID for TwitToday. I'm trying to manually add it to the home screen.

Posted by: verbalj

^^ Where do you go to input the CLSID?

I was referred here by a friend to customize my new phone and I wanted to add the google search to my homescreen but it ain't working. As it was reported earlier in the thread by another poster, the program downloads successfully, but I was planning on having that search bar on the homescreen.

I know here, http://www.howardforums.com/showpos...63&postcount=73, the CLSID was given, but I don't even know what to do with it lol.

Pardon the ignorance!

Can anyone please help? Thanks!

A little late in the answer, but this worked for me: http://www.howardforums.com/showpos...50&postcount=57

I agree that beep was annoying as hell.

Anyone know how to disable the record and stop record sound when you use the video camera mode? I searched and replaced all the startrec stoprec files with blank files as well as anything else i would think related to the sounds. Still no luck.

In \Application Data\Home\ you'll see a bunch of *.home.xml files. Those are the various home screen layouts. You can just rearrange the order of the plugin tags to reorder your screen but you can also add in new elements.

BTW, I keep hearing references to a "Personal" section in settings that my Duo doesn't have. Is this a feature of the PDA phones? It seems like that's where all the home screen customization goes on.

Posted by: verbalj

Can you please be a little more descriptive? This is my first smartphone so all this hacking/modding of it is still very new to me (I've only had the Duo since Monday).

I'm assuming from a registry editor, I should navigate to:

HKCU > Controlpanel > Home >

from there, I see that there are .xml files with stuff that sounds like they are on my home page (including the JPEG that I'm currently using as my wallpaper).

What should I do when I'm there? Do I add a new registry key, string value, binary value, etc., etc.?

Moreover, where do I paste that CLSID for the google search bar that I originally posted.

Sorry for the numerous questions but hey, we all gotta start somewhere.

Thanks for the help!

In addition to your PM, I was able to successfully add the google search bar to my select profile. Thanks to everyone else that helped!

Negative! Not compatible with a 4 gig card. I can attest to that!

2 gig is the max!

I just got my Pantech Duo with AT&T and I was wondering if anyone has a Gameboy Advance or SNES emulator that functions on their phone yet? Most of them aren't compatible with WM 6.

Also is there a way to make the icons on the Home Screen programs you select to put there instead of recent programs?

My last question, my boyfriend said that certain editing of the phone can cancel your warranty, does anyone know which things qualify for cancellation of the warranty/insurance?

The Duo needs to be app-unlocked first before you can make this change.

Quick question. Im a noob in this, and seem to be having the problem along with several other Duo owners...won't make/accept calls when in 3G mode. Now i read on, and found a site with a link to download a TMobile sda unlocker (hopefully it works with Duo's Att as well), and unlocked it, said unlock complete. Then restarted the phone and ReSynced it. But what I seem to be having the problem is with the registry portion. I bring it out to HKLM, but get lost after that since I dont see a "Comm" subtree. Is there something I'm missing? I do have those 2 View hidden files, and windows protected program enabled so it lets me see them. But nothing, I also don't see Bandselect.exe but I'm not sure if even it's suppose to be there. Help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

No resolution for this problem yet?

The screen on my Pantech Duo has gone out and I want to delete all data before sending to the factory. Is this possible and how??

Posted by: jayb2087

question.. I just got the Duo yesterday and I've noticed it runs really slow.. I had a BJ and even it was quicker with the WM6 update.. when I went into the Task Manager nothing was running but it was still running rediculously high.. is there a way to make it run faster and also get rid of all the crap it comes installed with?

Changed the registry...still switches to 3g . This is really annoying. Has anyone tried copying bandselect.exe from a BJ to the Duo?

Posted by: yozh

What did I miss I get the same cant edit registry ???

Posted by: yozh

Got it had to use SDAunlock

Posted by: Cal95

OK, nothing magical here, but I may as well get it started in case someone else has a more clever way to do this:

As you've noticed, Java will not let you uninstall the preloaded junk (trial games, etc.) that comes with your phone.

1. App unlock your phone (it's all over this thread, don't ask how to do it again)
2. Go to \Windows\Java and delete everything (jar,ss,ap,etc.) that has the name of the offensive app(s) in it (Midnight Pool for example).
3. Go to \Windows\Start Menu\ and delete the shortcuts to this crap (e.g. the trial games in the Games folder, etc.)

I couldn't find any more elegant way to do this or any other hooks to delete but perhaps you have. If so, share the love. I was just getting tired of the fact that no one else had brought this issue up...

Posted by: Cal95

OK, I know this is pretty obvious but...

The default Start Menu view is the large-icon "Grid" view. Changing the registry value:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Shell\StartMenu\GridView:0

gives you the small-icon "List" view.

I happen to prefer that and if you do too, go ahead and make this simple registry change.

P.S. As usual, SDAunlock your phone if you haven't already. I really like CEregeditor for tweaking the registry. (Google these terms if you don't know what I'm talking about).

Does anyone know how to reassign some keys on the QWERTY(keyboard)? I want to change the back button to another FN button because its annoying to have to reach all the way to the left of the board when I have to type a smile face in and other stuff.

hi i want to revive this thread since I found my pantech and wanted to mess with it. Okay so when i am browsing my phone and momentarily leave it untouched while in a program, it will dim in 10 sec (which I set) then go to black, once I hit a button to "wake it up" the phone goes back to the main menu! it doesn't go to where i was last.

How can I fix this?

If anyone here lives off of Remember The Milk like I do, I just created an app to quickly add items to your todo list. http://code.google.com/p/quickrtm/
