W580i Customization

What type of customization can you do to the W580i?

Posted by: dkosburn

Quite a bit from what I've seen so far, I don't have a Windows machine at home currently, so I'm limited in going too crazy but I did use a friends machine to flash/debrand my W580 via Wotanserver.

Getting rid of AT&T's advertising was beautiful, and now the Death Star button on the front acts as something useful (Alerts, Application Switcher, Shortcuts, Quick Internet Links) instead of just taking me to MEdiaNet. Not to mention being able to use any MP3 I want as a ringtone, and having access to tons of other things that AT&T locked out in their firmware

There are tons of quality themes available for free all over the place, 240x320 Java games look great on the phone (joystick would be nice but I'll live)

All in all it's the best phone I've ever had and I've got lots of room to customize things when I get another Windows box built

I am curious about a couple of things. I understand that you can change the Death Star button back to the activity menu and change the MP3 ringtone use without flashing the full main firmware (just by changing some files using FAR manager). But what are the "tons of other things" that at&t locked out in their firmware? Because I heard there aren't really any... except maybe they locked out using the volume button for something NOT volume related in standby mode (on the at&t phone it changes the ring volume like most other phones, on the non-branded phone it shows a phone status screen... useful I guess if I forget my phone number and what model of phone I have).

So how can you do all of this to your phone? Are there any guides for walkthroughs?

Ok, so "tons" was probably an exaggeration, but it certainly feels like a completely new phone. Also, if you hold down the volume key in standby it activates voice dial. The application switcher was huuuuge for me, and there are now some settings that I can adjust that I'm pretty sure I was locked out of before (other than just the WAP, etc).

Also, as I said I don't have a whole lot of experience with SE phone modding as of yet due to my lack of a Windows box, so reflashing through Wotan was really the only thing immediately available for me.

Hope this clears things up a bit

i noticed with rogers firmware, it locked out theme modding of the main screen as well as illumination [the lights on the side] limiting it to two colors. can shortcut the right button to whatever i want now too.

Well, all of those things could have been changed without reflashing the main firmware (especially since the voice activation already worked for me on AT&T firmware, just that not holding it down worked as volume for ring tone, which is preferable for me).

The WAP settings are locked, but you can change them from the computer (there is a setting in the configuration XML to lock or unlock the setting). Most of the other things were similarly configurable.

On the application switcher, I thought it would be great... until I tried using it. The web browser seems to be one thing you can't switch out of. Maybe if I install Opera Mini...

If you're using a Mac, it's time to install Leopard with Boot Camp so you can mod your SE!

Those things may be true, but you're missing the point. That is the CONFIGURATION of the phone, which are files in the filesystem, not the actual firmware. The configuration can be changed without changing the firmware of the phone. I find that if you are in fact using the phone on the operator that the for which the firmware is intended, oftentimes you'll have a better, less buggy experience. Then you can change the configuration to your heart's content, and have your menus, MP3s, button configurations, more memory because of fewer apps, etc.

so the configuration of the phone was not allowing themes to adjust the lights and the menu screen icons? i thought rogers firmware locked that out?

sigh... never mind.

sure, the firmware is locking it out.

I'm running the last revision of the G4 PowerBook, so no BootCamp for me I imagine I'll be able to talk my wife into a new one in a year or two though lol.

I'm sure a lonely Windows machine will turn up on my doorstep before too long, I'm always coming across used machines that just need a little TLC.

Hello, I am new to debranding but I read about it yesterday after I received my W580i from ATT. I read about the benefits of debranding so I went ahead and did it. I didn't have any problems debranding my phone but after it was done, I realized that many setting from AT&T were gone. I cannot send or receive messages and I cannot connect or retrieve anything from the internet. Since the settings for ATT were lost I cannot do much and I have looked everywhere for the proper settings for ATT w/o any luck . I was wondering if any of you have the W580i and debranded your phone, could you be so kind as to supply me with the settings to get my text messaging back or the settings to be able to connect to the internet? If there is a webpage where I can get this information, I would greatly appreciate it if I got a link. I have tried getting the internet settings from www.sonyericsson.com through their text sms service but since I can't receive messages, I didn't receive it. Thanks in advace for any help you guys can give me...

If i flashed my s500i to w580i IS MY NEW PHONE considered a w580i and will work with all w580 themes/games etc?

Posted by: araemo

I'm looking for a good walkthrough for changing 3 things on my w580i:

1: Death star button back to app switcher
2: volume buttons back to phone status + next appointment(Like my Z525a)
3: disable startup/shutdown sounds

From what I've read, FAR manager + SEFP would let me push files to the phone, but doesn't let me download the current files to modify? And how do I know how to get the buttons to do what I want, I haven't found any examples for the changes I want, just people saying they've done it.

The answer to your question is on the first page of this thread. Currently the ringtone is limited to 30 seconds, you have to debrand the phone in order to get it to be longer.

i bought a w580i with an at&t icon below the screen and i dunno if its already debranded or not..
i dun have the at&t icon on startup nor the icon on the interface. the activity button works like it suppost to. the volume button also works normally. the free space is just like the www.gsmarena.com spec'. it has few of the flash menu theme and the light adjust according to the theme. i have download a few themes from deviantart and some of it use the light mechanism properly. ive check the software info and it shows this:

CXC1123476
R6BC002
070607
Sony Ericsson

so is it branded..?

Posted by: harpreet1988

Does the button on the bottom right take you to medianet? if not then its debranded.

Posted by: takeuchie

u mean the button dat have the globe logo rite..?
no it doesnt..it goes straight to the activity menu..
so does dis means i can add flash menus and other customization on dis phone..?

Posted by: harpreet1988

yes its debranded, you can customize it as you like.
