Can the HTC Juno aka TMO Shadow handle GPS?

I want this phone but I'm looking for a smart phone that can handle gps. I obviously know it isn;t built in, but I'm talking about using an external gps reciever and aftermarket software.

I want to be able to mount it in the car and have navigation.

I'm sure it will work if you're using a bluetooth receiver.

Im asking because it is only 201 mhz, so i was wondering if it could handle it.

it has windows mobile 6 standard so Im sure nav software can be installed.

I would be storing maps on an sd card anyways.

yeah I see tomtom can be run on the MDA and I think that also is 200 mhz so it probably will work. sounds good.

I dont mind that it may not be the best phone but for the price, it has everything I want or need for now.

so how do you like rt 66? does it give turn by turn directions like a real nav system? is the speaker on the phone loud enough? or do you use earphones to hear the voice prompts?

I think rt66 and tomtom and the like offer 30 different voices so Im assuming they do give directions like a real thing.

I can buy a portable nav but Im an all in one kind of guy, it would be better if I could carry it around, so a phone is ideal for me. use for the car and walking around town.

Do I need a touch screen phone in order to use navigation? or will a non touch screen be fine? Since the shadow is non touch screen

A dash is also around 200 bux now so I'll look into that if it will be better for navigational needs. does the dash run win 6 or win 5?

You don't need touchscreen. For the smartphone platform, I recommend Route 66 as well since it runs better.

The Dash can run both WM5 and WM6.

Thanks a lot!!

Im getting the shadow since its newer and a smaller more slicker package.

I was wondering about the specs and non touch but you guys helped me answer those questions.

How much is the rt 66 software and where is the best place to buy it? I hear that holux makes the better gps recievers so I'll be getting that probably.

Seems like rt 66 is meant for windows mobile 5. the shadow has mobile 6 standard, so it doesnt seem like it's compatible, may need to find another brand.

or maybe I need the pocket pc edition? since they listed the tmo mda (wizard) as compatible so maybe htc is considered to be pocket pc?

said you need windows mobile 2003 or higher?

Im confused, may have to call their customer service to verify before buying it.

hey,

i had the dash and was using gps on it for a while, its not bad, but its MUCH better on a touchscreen.. i just upgraded to the at&t tilt (unlocked and using it on tmobile), and if your going to be using gps regularly, i'd definately get that. i put it in landscape mode, and open up tomtom, and its exactly like a normal gps device. good luck... keep in mind with the dash/shadow you have to buy the gps reciever, with the tilt, its built it.

My TMO shadow works fine with Holux external bluetooth GPS rec.; but i agree with OMAR, get the tilt if you are doing alot of GPS, since tilt is touchscreen and much easier to use when you need to input address and other features. Shadow has a special keyboard, unless you are good at it, might take you forever to enter address. Hope that helps.

Finally a shadow owner who has first hand knowledge!

I understand about the tilt, but its too much $$$ for me ATM. 500 is out of my price range for a phone, I will wait until they get to be near 300ish.

The gps is more of a novelty for me. I just want it for the sake of having it. I won;t really use it a lot. I rarely go out of familiar grounds, but it would be nice to have something in case you get lost.

I hate having to print out mapquest and try to find streets and stuff, so gps would help for that.

so seems like shadow will do the trick for me for sure now. I want a smart phone that is not a bulky brick, which looks nice and can do the basic organizing I need. And is affordable 200 after rebate is not bad at all. (im only willing to extend for one year so I'll pay 50 bux more).

what software are you using with the shadow btw? what works with WM6?

3rd party software Smart2Go & GoogleMaps.

Smart2Go gives u the direction, 2/3D features, and you might have to play for subscription usage.

GoogleMaps is free...for what you need, i think this might be it.

Cheers.

I would rather have a program that stores map data on a card, so I wont need a data plan.

I may get one eventually but not now. I know there are out there but it seems only for win mobile 5 so far. Hopefully they make them for 6 soon. or there probably is a maker already that I havent found yet.

Im now thinking of getting the wizard foe gps since it has a touch screen, and is now 200.

and is wm5 so all software is compatible.

Route 66 works for WM6 smartphone as well.

I generally agree that touchscreen is better for GPS because it's easier to use at a glance in the car. It also helps since the WM Professional/PPC series have bigger screens as well. There's also more software to choice from (For PPC I prefer Tomtom over Route 66 slightly).

The Wizard is a bit of a trade-off since it's fairly bulky compared to the much smaller and sleeker smartphones. Also, it has less RAM than the Shadow. The RAM makes a huge difference in multi-tasking. Smartphone feels faster with the OMAP processor and the added RAM would make the overall experience better. Remember, you're also using this as a phone (or so I think), so try to factor all of that into your decision.
