Fix - T-Mobile EDGE resets after reboot

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: SurrealNetworks

Greetings,

After upgrading to 1.1.1 (thank you jailbreakme.com for the easy jailbreak) I noticed that after rebooting the iphone I couldn't access EDGE until I set the APN again. After some research I found some pages that gave the answer. The file that needs to be updated is usually updated using WinSCP (for Windows users) and OpenSSH. To make this process easier I've created a simple installer.app package

1. In Apptapp (Installer.app), make sure you have "community Sources" installed.

2. On the sources tab of Installer.app, press Edit then Add http://iphone.surrealnetworks.com/repo

3. After you add the SN Repository press "Refresh".

4. On the "Install" tab find the "SurrealNetworks" category and install the "Sticky APN T-Mobile" package.

5. After installing the package go to Settings > General > Network > EDGE. Verify or add the APN wap.voicestream.com, leave the username and password fields blank.

6. Reboot to verify the settings stick!

Hey SN, I usually use WinSCP to do this but anyway you can make it where you can add any APN and it will stick rather than a preformatted file with wap.voicestream.com?

Posted by: dsigma6

Excellent work, as always.

I will use this instead of editing files with WinSCP, or the Services app (I hate it).

Thanks!

I'm relatively new to the iphone and have never owned a Mac, so my experience is limited. wap.voicestream.com should work for both t-zones and total Internet packages. This is a simple solution, I'll see if I can come up with a better one OR I'll just add carrier settings for all requested carriers.

If there are any typos I blame them on this iPhone

Posted by: dsigma6

Not that you doubted it would work, but I'm just verifying that it works as described, and required very little to set up.

Thanks Surreal!

Posted by: SurrealNetworks

No worries, I appreciate you verifying it does work! I got a chuckle from looking at your phone history. I too used an SDA, then a Dash and after switching to an iPhone I felt like saying "sorry guys"

Posted by: dsigma6

Ha, and I had the 220 as well! The iPhone truly does blow them all out of the water.

Posted by: GeeK.dLL

Also you can use Fugu or WinSCP go to /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreTelephony.framework/Support/

backup the UnknownCarrier.plist file (just in case) delete UnknownCarrier.plist file on your iPhone

Now you your APN settings will be kept after reboot.

Posted by: SurrealNetworks

That's great info, I'm going to look into this further

Posted by: SurrealNetworks

Thanks for the tip, GeeK.dLL! I've created a new installer that will allow you to input any EDGE APN and it will stick. Please uninstall the "T-Mobile APN" package and install the new "Sticky APN" package.

Posted by: lonelystll

thanks a bunch!!.. i was having problem on the APN keep resetting itselft. This solved it. Keep it alive.

Posted by: Mohit

Very Nyce.

Posted by: SurrealNetworks

Great success, high five!

Worked flawlessly, thanks SN!

I have a question, and I don't mean the thread jack, but: after the tzones gps proxy settings have been installed on an iPhone, does the AT&T internet still work if a AT&T sim is used? or does the proxy pac prevent the AT&T settings from working properly?

Just curious

Posted by: Mohit

I have another project for you SN.

Now can you get the PAC file and other plist files app to go along with this?

This doesn't modify or add a proxy pac, it's only to make your APN stick after reboot.

Lol, thats funny. I was actually looking into your request this morning so that people can use the proxy hack for T-Mobile. The problem I'm having is i don't have a "virgin" preferences.plist file. I could use mine but I've noticed several keys that reference my network and computer including names and long keys.

Does anyone have a virgin preferences.plist?

Posted by: ranova

use the repo in my guide found in my sig, there is a tzones proxy hack script that will automatically apply upon installing.

With that, there are youtube fix, edge fix, auto-virginizing, unlock, and other scripts.

Posted by: SurrealNetworks

Thanks for the preferences.plist!

Posted by: Mohit

nvm, someone sent it already...

Posted by: frybecker

i used this method as well as sticky and nither get the APN to stick for edge to work.

I heard you also have to change the proxy settings on the phone too by using WinSCP + an editor like EditPadLite and modify some code.
Is this needed in addition to the APN settings on the EDGE? Because I put the APN settings for wap.voicestream.com and I can't get an EDGE connection. I have the $5.99 plan from TMobile which should work. And yes, I also tried internet2.voicestream.com as well. No luck.

Somebody please educate me on this.

Posted by: SurrealNetworks

Yeah, StickyAPN just prevents the APN from being deleted after reboot. To access the net with T-Zones you need the Proxy pac. You can check out ranova's site or you can install the "T-Mobile T-Zones Proxy" package from my repository.

Good luck!

I like you Edge fix...nj again. If you need me to mirror it let me know SN.

It doesn't solve my problem

I am on ATT but I don't want to use EDGE so I tried this add-on and turned EDGE OFF in services.. then re-started... EDGE turned back on (I didn't enter any APN info because I am already an ATT user but I don't have an EDGE plan).

So I thought of entering a false APN setting and leave EDGE ON... then re-started... Somehow, EDGE reset itself and was able to use the web eventhough I entered false APN settings before I restart!!

Please help... those EDGE charges are too much!!!!!!!

BTW, Ranova, I just stumbled upon your website. It is amazing! I wish I have known about it long time ago when I was unlocking my iphone. Thanks guys for all the effort you put into this.

If you have the installer app installed on your iPhone just install the application called "services" and turn off Edge that way.

Posted by: kankasha

I did that but when I check "usage" I find that it accessed EDGE and I don't remember restarting my iphone either so how this happened? I would much prefer a permanent fix so it doesn't turn on.

AMAZING! Thanks alot!

I tried moding my preferences.plist file without a backup of my original. I messed something up and now my phone can't even access safari or youtube using WiFi. I know that the preferences.plist files are all different from phone to phone (there's some phone ID's in the code). But, can someone send me a sample of a normal looking one (before the TZones mod) so I can compare it to mine and fix what is different with respect to the core stuff that is not phone to phone dependent?

I'm afraid I screwed up my phone now...

Posted by: SurrealNetworks

Try installing the "T-Mobile T-Zones Proxy" package from the repository listed in this thread. After installing then reboot your iPhone. See if that works.

Wait, who is your EDGE provider?

Posted by: Nokia_3650_2003

awesome, wap settings sticked. thanks

Posted by: elroi21

Iphone works great on edge now.

Thanks

where am I gonna get the t mobile proxy I have inlocles tmobile phone with 1.1.1 firmware.PLs help

Will these EDGE settings work if the phone was upgraded to 1.1.2 from 1.1.1?

I did not install any of the above mentioned apps yet... but i did try to manually input the APN as "internet2.voicestream.com" under Network settings. Once I input this and go back, the phone freezes for a while and then goes back to the springboard. It does not save the APN I input.

Any help?

Thanks a lot in advance...

I haven't tested it with 1.1.2. Try this method, as taken from the "More Info" section on the SN repo.

Uninstall the StickyAPN if it has been installed. Reboot so we are starting fresh.

BEFORE installing the package go to Settings > General > Network > EDGE. Verify or add the APN and username/password settings for your wireless carrier's EDGE network.

AFTER setting the APN, use Installer.app to install the StickyAPN package. Exit Intaller.app and reboot your device. Let us know if it works with 1.1.2

Not working. The moment I enter the VPN as "internet2.voicestream.com" or "wap.voicestream.com", and hit on Network, the screen freezes and afer a while goes back to the Lock screen mode. Once I slide the unlock button, and check, the VPN is blank.

I have also tried to install the app first and then try to input the VPN. But when I installed the App, surprisingly the EDGE option under Networks is not available. It was not available until I uninstall the app.

Let me know if there is any other way around it.

Posted by: VizagDude

Ok.. I have the EDGE working now. I searched on the net and I found a link where some one posted an app that would let the VPN stick and a code that would need to upload. Once I did that... everything worked just fine.

I am not sure if I can post some other forum's thread here, so... Mods.. please let me know if I am allowed to do that.. or I can post the process and give credit to the guy who found this process.

Lemme know...

I used to have the edited Pref for proxy using 5.99 plan.
With 1.1.2 firmware, I don't have to edit the file. I just use 5.99 as 19.99.
Youtube searching works too. Can anybody confirmed this?

Posted by: anthonymoody

I just purchased an unlocked 1.1.2 phone. I don't know if it was originally 1.1.1 or earlier - it arrived to me as 1.1.2. In any case, I popped in my TMo SIM, entered the APN info, and *so far* have not lost it. But the day is young I'll report back...

TM

Posted by: anthonymoody

Well knock on wood but so far so good. I've not (yet) lost the APN info after many days of pretty hard use. Fingers still crossed!

Amiroo, did someone ever send this to you? I am having the same issue.

I <3 you. This was a big peeve of mine. Works great with the 1.1.3 firmware (it was unlocked today).

Note that I forgot to remove Customize.app before upgrading, so the APN screen was locking up, and you can't install the current Customize on 1.1.3. So i reset just Network settings in Settings > General > Reset. Voila!

I think my brain just asploded.

you're using 1.1.3 on T-Mobile? When did the sim-unlock come out? I thought we were only at a jailbreak for the time being?

Posted by: SurrealNetworks

I've been through hell with the EDGE APN issue with the 1.1.3 soft upgrade. I'll be more than happy to answer questions in regards to the new soft upgrade. Please post here and you can also post at my site

The 1.1.3 Jailbreak did not break iPhones that were SIM Unlocked by anySIM, so you can use their upgrade to change the firmware, but not the baseband. Apparently, the Dev Team did not authorize this release however, and they are planning on releasing a Jailbreak that will upgrade the baseband as well and make it fully functional, which is what I am waiting for :P
