Phone freezes and stalls v1.1.1. Is this because of BSD subsystem?

Many people are hacking their phones but my question is does your phone freeze alot or stalls and reboots often or occasionally? I have restore numerous times and the problem arises all the time. I have installed the new version of INSTALLER, Summerboard 3.0a11, Lights off, NES (no roms yet), Blackjack, Tic Tac Toe, Labyrinth, Send Song v0.19, Textedit, Vnotes, TodoList. My previous restore I did not install BSD Subsystem, and my unlock, activ. youtube jailbreak all worked without it. Any insight as to why this freezing is happening besides the fact that I hacked my phone.

EDIT: using Rogers Carrier, 1.1.1 out of the box

by any chance did you have Apollo Chat installed at anytime? The reason I ask is because your exact symptoms happened to me after I had installed Apollo and even after I uninstalled it the problems still happened. I had to restore my phone and jailbreak it again and this time its fine since I have not installed Apollo. Anyone else have a problem with Apollo?

No I don't have Apollo. Did you customize your springboard???? Backgounds? Icons??

Yes I did customize and still have no problems currently.

I have all of these same symptoms... I have mobile chat installed... and BSD System installed... as well as summerboard and send song... and It freezes/semi reboots all day long! Also i have over 1000 songs in my playlist and I cannont make it through the entire sendsong library without it freezing or going back to the home screen! So annoying

Might restore it and leave it stock after jailbreaking.

Yea sendsong does it to me also. I have been doing many restores and uninstalls to find out the problem. Like trial and error. I really believe BSD subsystem has also to do with the freezing. There is two methods of jailbreaking and the new procedure with jailbreakme.com installs BSD automatically wheb updating, where as the jailbreak using jailbreak.toc2rta.com does not install BSD work bettter at resolving the freezing.

Anyone else? Maybe ur theory or procedures are better.

hmmm I've Jailbroken my phone both ways (jailbreakme.com as well as Carnival) and neither put BSD on my phone they only put the installer. I have since restored and jailbroke with jailbreak.com and the only thing I have done is update the installer.app no freezes and the OS seems a lot more responsive I think the BSD system is the cause of these freezes and such.

mine did the same thing as soon as uninstalled summerboard it stopped. I think summerboard has an issue with 1.1.1

Yes it is summerboard... I have uninstalled it until they make a new version that is more stable.

Is is JUST summerboard though? If you install the BSD System and community tools and in SendSong can any of you get through your entire list without it freezing? My thinking here is that it MAY be summerboard but it could also be certain other apps that are buggy. For now I won't be installing anything ... it got to the point were it was almost unusable and all I had installed was summerboard with one theme and sendsong.

I ask because this is the only thing I have not done yet but was going to try. Summerboard is a nice addition to iphone. Tough to let go

From what i've been reading that customize and summerboard are not recommended to be installed because of unstability with the the new firmware. I have no problems with reboots or crashing since I decided not to install anything except bsd system for anysim. I guess you might have to wait till everything is patched up again. i hope this helps.

i've had the same problems. started happening when i changed my themes thru summerboard and installed send song...but i uninstalled smb, send song and customize. bsd wasn't installed to begin with...now everything is so far so good...i can play with maps, music, youtube, safari without having it shutdown or freeze...

It is the new Summerboard. Do not install unless you want repeated crashes.

Has any tried to install the Summerboard(OLD) from installer???? I think you need to install "Sources/Community Sources" from installer to see the OLD Summerboard v2.11.

Or is any version of Summerboard not compatible with 1.1.1????

i have/had the same problem. It got to the point where it was happening soo often I got tired of it. I restored it via itunes and had to jailbreak it via jailbreakme.com. I left installer on and only installer with the bds subsystem, ssh, and community sources. NO lag, no crashes whatsoever. I then installed summerboard. NO crashes. I then installed send son, uploaded a ringtone, installed the ringtone. Soon after, i experienced some crashing. All of a sudden, running WiFi and bluetooth, crashes were CONSTANT. I uninstalled my themes and just put the reg. icons on with summerboard. I only get crashes once every often, but its still annoying. I think its SendSong.

I'm wondering if i downgrade to 1.0.2, virginize the phone, then do a complete upgrade from factory to 1.1.1 and jailbreak and use anysime to unlock. Does anyone think this will fix it?

That fixed things for me, before I did this apps would crash so often that i was gonna return the phone and try simething else..... Not any more!

I can say now send song is the culprit. I uninstalled it and left SMB on and everything seems to be running better. I was thinking pf getting rid of my iphone like Escofch but it looks like I am back on board. I am going to continue to install other apps to see if this freezing problem comes back up. I'll keep u guys posted.

Thanks everyone for ur help. I think this would be a good thread to keep going if certain apps have problems so others can come and read up on

I was also going to make this suggestion. I was suddenly having crashes like crazy. Finally I narrowed it down to "dim wallpaper" being selected. Now I have Customize and SMB both installed and haven't had a crash in days and days. But another issue: Does anyone notice in customize that the LCARS icons for the slider button do not work?

If you have "dim wallpaper" in SMBPrefs enabled, disable that - i was having crashing problems all the time until I did that..

Hey guys. i had alot of apps installed. i had apollo, summerboard andthe bsd subsystem. My iphone was always freezing and going wacko. i mean the play icon for the ipod would show up at the top right hand corner when i wasnt even playing a song. As mentioned below i think it had to do with the summerboard app. mainly the dim wallpaper. do not dim wall paper or you iphone will not work properly. After removing summerboard, apollo and customise it works fine now.

i was just wondering does anyone receive any error messages when their trying to send a txt?

How do you turn off SSH from BSD Subsystem???????????

Update: Dim wallpaper helps alot, but my iphone still exits safari and mail at random maybe once a day. Looking to disable SSH from BSD Subsystem. Maybe this will help

I get it sometimes, but I think that is due to the network. Sometime I wait for 5 seconds and it sends ok.

i think it's summerboard, that's the biggest problem i had it's how i had my phone bricked and then downgrade and then virginized and then updated and unlocked...long freaking process. my phone is gonna be SMB-free from now on.

it's not just summerboard, i had the same problem in here. It drove me to downgrade the firmware, baseband and then upgraded and jailbroke, and then unlocked. So a fresh new 1.1.1, installed everything, I have about 3 pages of apps. Nothing freezes, no crashes what-so-ever. I didn't put dim on, i didn't use customize because there is no use for it. SendSong, the updated version, i think 21e or something, worsk perfect. I have about 3 or 4 ringtones.

I say take out the dim and go from there. Likewise, i noticed in the SOURCES section of installer, there was a category "UNSTABLE" source. I deleted that.

I have the same problem as u guys, It was pissing me off, I was about to break my phone, I removed everything n its prefect now. But there's two things I really want without installing summer board, is it possible to have scrolling icons without smb? Also whats the best way to get the background to show up with smb? Thanks

I've installed Magic 8 Ball, SMSD, CALLD, and so far no issues.

Has anyone tried installing the new SEND SONG by Erica. Apparently the new version is out v0.5x

First off, I'm getting a lot of crashes as well, but IMHO that's the cost of doing business with hacking.

However, I do NOT have SendSong installed. Nor do I have SSH installed. I *do* have the latest version of SummerBoard installed, and have turned off the "dim wallpaper" option. Doesn't appear to help all that much, as I still get random crashes. From what I understand, the BSD subsystem has SSH turned on by default, but Services (actually, I use the much more useful iToggle, which can be found on ride4.org/shai.xml in installer.app) can't turn it off unless you install openSSH. Ergo, I've installed that as well; however, even after rebooting the phone, iToggle shows SSH as "off" already.

Installed Services, and it shows SSH as on...odd.

IMHO, however, the problem appears to be Summerboard, and the dim wallpaper option, while causing SOME crashes, is not the end-all-be-all solution IMHO. Lots of us are experiencing random (and in some cases, frequent) crashes/reboots, so we need to find a common thread in all our iPhones. As of right now, that appears to be SummerBoard.

I just wanted to report: since installing openSSH, then disabling SSH using services, and turning off the "dim wallpaper" option in SMBPrefs, I have not had one single reboot or crash. NONE.

I think we might be on to something here.
