symbian was made specifically for mobile phones. windows mobile is a crash-happy, buggy, resource hungry, slow, and overweight piece of junk.
windows mobile has the advantage of having lots of of applications for it. all other advantages belong to symbian.

This has been covered numerous times. The bottom line is that Symbian of the S60 flavor is built for multimedia content whereas Windows Mobile is geared more towards the business user. Windows Mobile is generally more difficult to use, but it has a silly amount of customization options available. S60 is arguably the 2nd easiest operating system to use (next only to the dummy proof iPhone) with less customization options, but with more media oriented features.
As a whole, Symbian accounts for over 67% of the smartphone market in the world.
