I'm planning on changing from Verizon to ATT. On Verizon I had an 8830 but returned it because the volume was too low on the ringers and when using the phone but when playing music it was fine. I've looked around a while and can't tell whether the 8310 has the same issues.
This is a major issue for me so I want to be sure before I buy it.

i think a more comparative model would be the 8820
also, im no expert on blackberries, but have been doing some research and mostly ive seen good mentions about earpiece volume

I have a blackberry curve and I think the volume was pretty good.

I do realize that the 8310 and 8830 are two different phones but one of the things I did miss on the 8830 was the camera and ability to do picture messaging. That is why I'm looking at the curve or maybe a pearl.

Odds are against finding someone who has really used the 8830 and 8310 and can provide a meaningful comparison on something subjective like this for you. Every carrier offers a trial period so your best bet is to just pick up the device you're interested in.

Thanks everyone for your help. I went to the store today and ended up getting the iphone. I am seriously considering taking it back tomorrow because of the lack of 3rd party apps for it. When I do I'll be getting the BB8310.

Wirelessly posted (Blackberry 8300: BlackBerry8310/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)
Iswitched from the 8830 to an 8300 and now an 8310 over the course of several months. There are no volume issues on the 8300 series phones and it is much better than the 8830 on both receive audio and the microphone. The 8830 has lots of background noise on the micrprophone and the 8300 series phones do not.
