promotions

I just got hired for a AT&T store in Baltimore, Maryland (apparently its a union) and I start my training nov. 19th. I understand that the average rep makes over $30,000/yr and honestly I'm sure I will make more b/c the store traffic seemed average when I interviewed and I consider myself to be a confident sales guy.

My main question is, what are my chances of moving up within the company and how long would these steps take. I do not imagine myself working as a regular sales rep. for any longer then 18 months. My main reason for working for AT&T is because I enjoy working with cell phones and I wanted to find a career that had to do with cell phones, so I figured working as a sales rep. is a good way to get my foot in the door for future goals.

Is my thinking correct? Are chances high for me to be a sales rep. for about 18 months or less and expect a promotion as long as I hit my quota's?

Any input will be helpful so please don't be shy to respond!

didn't you just post this in the sticky above?

If you want a promotion quickly, you have to demonstrate 4 things.

1) Hit not only you targets, but consistently hit the higher tiers. Always be busting your *** to make sales.
2) Demonstrate exceptional customer service. At least don't get a reputation for exceptionally ****** service.
3) Show a willingness to help out other reps when they need you. Basically, not be the a-hole in EVERY store (there's almost always one) that won't do anything that won't directly effect his paycheck.
4) Make a good impression with the people in your chain of reporting, basically not be a self-sabotaging *******.

I've seen people promoted within a year of being higher as a rep. Other people remain reps for the better part of a decade before moving up.

thanks for the response guys and yea i did have the same post in the sticky but i thought more people would read the thread if it wasn't in the stickied. But yea I hope that I get promoted within 18 mos at the latest as long as I am meeting my expectations. I guess what I don't want is, me hitting above and beyond my sales goals consistently and then not be promoted just because I don't know the right person Hopefully this will work out... and thanks again for your responses!

If you just meet expectations and don't stand out, it could be 5 or more years before you get an offer.
