Data Plan vs. Wifi

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

i just got the data plan (i got it for free until the 20th) and i really like it...i've relied on wifi throught all my ppc's and it's served well, but it sux being in an area not finding an unsecured connection...anyways, does anybody know how i can keepw wifi alive when i turn my display off? that's wat i love about the data plan, it keeps the internet on EVEN when the display is OFF...i couldn't get this to work on my 8125 and now not on my 8525..can anybody please help me fix this!!? thnx

Posted by: VTECaddict

your battery would be dead in like 3 hours if wifi stayed on all the time.

Posted by: kareem9nba

idc about the battery...well i leave my 3g on all day and turn the display off and it barely wastes much

Posted by: jomo25

I dont use WiFi much, but I've heard that this is an issue with the Tilt. It will not keep the WiFi connection alive while it is off, and there hasn't been a workaround found yet that I know of. Maybe installing a screen saver of some sort.

Posted by: kareem9nba

i'd love to find a workaround for it, but i guess it's not out there...does wifi waste the battery more than 3g?

So you are wanting to steal someone bandwidth and not pay for your own.

ATT offers you a phone with wireless connectivity. Accessing unsecured wireless networks is stealing, not something that ATT offers.

Posted by: kareem9nba

o ur talking about that...i have my own dsl at home, but when i'm away, if i find a nonsecured connection than i go on it...duh, it's not like i'm decrypting the connection to find the key and hack int o it...:duhsmiley: (even tho there isn't one)

Which is stealing, you did not pay to access that unsecured connection. I am not trying to be the police, just informing you on something that you may or may not know. Either way accessing an unsecured network, while dumb for the owner, is stealing bandwidth.

Posted by: kareem9nba

nope, i've called networks on this and belive me, they'd know more..they said it's not, just isn't that nice...plus it's there fault for leaving it open

According to California Penal Code 502.c.7, it is illegal to access a wireless computer network without the owners permission. Check here if you do not believe me. I looked specifically for Cali since that is where you live, but there are similar laws in other states. Whoever you called lied to you. They would not know more than the actual penal code of the state. Trust me.

Posted by: kareem9nba

can we get on the subject please? that's nie, ok....as long as i'm not hurting them, then it's ok...they should lock it if they don't ppl accessing it...end of discussion.

PhoneAlarm or Comm Manager Pro can access the WIFI directly through the driver rather than the default comm manager which uses the battery saving "feature" of turning off the wifi when in sleep mode. I don't know of any programs that do this for free. And yes, your battery won't be lasting very long with it on all day.

Posted by: petard

ha, your battery would be dead so fast if you left WiFi on. And yes, it is stealing to use an unsecured network without permission. Just pay for a data plan, $20/month is not much at all.

Posted by: kareem9nba

i still disagree about the wifi thing, but w/e....like at a ucla campus, they have wifi wherever you are, you can use it...if u hacked in, then that's a different story...forget this anyways, i've changed my mind about it..btw it's 40buks a month, not 20...and it's really not my choice

Eh, who REALLY cares about getting your wifi jacked. If anyone who knows what bandwidth is and cared about it, im sure they woudlve tooken their time to set a damn password and secure their network. Seriously, I dont think i've heard of anyone being arrested (actually, i have never) because he/she took some random person's bandwidth from a best buy linksys router. Now unless you're a router bandwidth stealing prohibitionist officer or something to that random sort, garry, no one actually cares who's on his/her network. It's a pda phone, it's not like he lugs his Dell XPS around to hardcore game on the network and download a 6gb HD transformers movie. If anything, there will be 0 noticeable difference on that person's bandwidth. In fact, my friend atm has 2 people using his router (most likely his neighbors), he thinks its a hassle to call 911 saying "please help, my neighbor is stealing my internet!! and I can't download my pr0n movies correctly". He's just gonna set a password in a matter of 2 clicks and a few finger motions. Besides, kareem just said whenever he passes by he just uses it a little bit. Now that my rant is over, lets get back into the subject.

Kareem, I too had a minor dilemma whether or not i should've gotten a data plan with ATT or just relied on wifi (where i'm at, there is wifi EVERYWHERE since im a campus student). I'm able to go anywhere knowing that I have access to internet. For the past week, I have studied for two exams thanks to my tilt. Having the data plan is EXTREMELY convenient and it prevents other from accusing you of being a stealer due to california state law . For just 19.99 a month, it's definitiely worth it.

Regards,
-K-

Go to google and search "arrested wireless internet" and look at the hits. It's a bummer and I am not condoning the issue, but just thought I'd let you know it does happen. Here is a quick read:

I am only letting the kid know that it is illegal. if you and him are to stubborn to admit that fine. It is a law and it is being broken bottom line.

What plan are you guys talking about that is $20? UL PDA is $30, UL Smartphone is $15. I bought my 8525 with the UL PDA (to get the device discount) and will at the end of the month either delete it (using the OLM) or change it to another plan. (was thinking of switching devices in the OLM to my Son's 3125 and get the $15 UL Plan)

Whenever I find a neighbor with a unsecured Wifi, I let them know. Some are quite surprised, some do it on purpose to share with others...

Yeah the thing is, I wouldn't be saying those things IF kareem did that. I'm just saying that ya'll are here policing the crap outta him when he is in no way attempting to hack a guy through his pda. Obviously, if someone did that to me i'd call the police. (who the heck parks next to your house and does that, i mean cmon honestly, you're basically being asked to be arrested.) Now, UNLESS kareem admits that he stays outside someone house with his pda trying to hack him/her, then i'll take my words back. But, as for now, my words still stand. I know it's illegal, and is it me being stubborn? nah. I'm just letting YOU know, garry, that all he asked for for this thread is whether or not its worth it to get the data plan, and I say yes, go ahead and get the 19.99 one. But honestly, let him be arrested if he attempted to do such a felony; it's his own personal business. Besides, I wouldn't mind him being arrested as well if he did such a thing.

What you fail to realize is that I am not trying to police him just inform him. Yes, he came in asking for something else but, I am giving him the heads up on something that is illegal.

I don't think this has been tested in the courts in all states. I also think that leaving an open AP should be ruled to be implicit permission for anyone to use it. The DMCA only prohibits circumventing an access control mechanism, but in an unsecured network, there is no access control mechanism active. Furthermore, the AP is BROADCASTING, on UNLICENSED, PUBLIC airwaves, its availability for use. Since anyone has permission to transmit on unlicensed airwaves within FCC regulations, anyone should have permission to use fully open APs. Hacking into a secured network by circumventing the access control is a different matter.

Re: the sptimes article. The man didn't go about this the right way when he called police. What he should have done is switched on a packet sniffer and had fun with it. That's why I don't use other people's networks for anything except either public websites or encrypted transfers. If it's my network, I have the right to sniff any unencrypted traffic that goes across it. Then send the person an anonymous email with his captured passwords and scare the crap out of him (do NOT under any circumstances use that information to break into his accounts though; that would be illegal). Maybe he'll learn to be more careful about using others' access points.

It's like the time someone hotlinked to some of my website photos on his blog and claimed them to be his own. Rather than *****ing to the police or whining about copyright infringement, I simply wrote a script that looked at the HTTP referrer field. If the field indicated a request from his blog, the script would instead send a...shall I say...alternate set of photos to anyone viewing his webpage. Otherwise, the normal photos were returned. I got quite a laugh seeing the comments about those photos on his site. I think the person also learned why you don't want to hotlink to other people's websites.
