Does Apple's updates make you want to leave the iPhone?

Well, dont get me wrong. I love my iPhone! Hands down it is one of the best mobile phones I have used and I have used just about every phone brand. From Motorola, SE to even a crappy Sharp phone...

However I have never been so frustrated with a phone company than with Apple. Every phone I have owned, for the most part has always been a factory unlocked, unbranded one and updating those said phones were never a problem. Even with a BRANDED phone (like my branded but unlocked Cingular Blackjack), those updates were never a problem. Now cue the Apple iPhone... These updates that are breaking everyones hard work is driving me up the wall. I am a 1.0.2 user and the idea of being able to update my F/W is something that I would LIKE to do. Just when I am thinking about taking the 1.1.1 plunge, Apple puts a fly in the ointment with 1.1.2! To me this just seems like a never ending struggle that will never go away and to me, the frustration of waiting for an hack to break what Apple has put out, then for others to brick their phones over and over trying to apply the said hack seems like a bit much...

Hmmm, just my 2 cents. I love the iPhone but I am not sure how much longer I can hold on.

I've had phones that go years between updates. I'd rather have an update that I have to wait for hackers to unlock and then choose to use it rather than have no updates at all.

Plus, as it stands, I'm happy with the phone as it is. That's why I bought it.
I understand the frustration, but regular updates are not normally very regular in the cellphone world. (depending on manufacturer)

I'm going to go out on a limb (after using the iPhone for awhile), an say that the iPhone really can't be categorized as a cellphone. It's more of a portable computer / ipod with a cellphone application built in. The iPod and it's workstation counterpart iTunes receive many regular updates. Because the iPhone is built around that framework, I think it's pretty normal for it to get this many regular updates. If you take a look at the updates, none of the features or bugfixes are actually addressing the phone component of the iPhone, rather miscellaneous functionality such as international keyboards, user interface and the like. If you take the telephony component of the iPhone itself, I don't think it's been touched from 1.0.0 through 1.0.2.

Anyhow, I'm just saying that I would disagree because a vast majority of people who buy an iPhone realize that it's primary function is not a phone. Heck, you have to drill into 2 menus before you can even dial a number!

Any takers?

I agree with you L. I get what you are saying. My point being, either a phone first or a PDAesque device with a phone built in, I think that its a bit much to have to continually have these relocking countermeasures. Maybe my point is that when an REAL update that say enables MMS and copy pasting, etc comes out...an update that everyone REALLY wants/needs, then we all have to wait it out. For the most part it is just frustrating to me that is all.

I think apple plans to roll these features out slowly - actually, I think it's a great move on their part, both from a marketing and financial standpoint.

1) it increase the product lifecycle
2) for the average 'real - legit' user, one day, they click the update button and all of a sudden then have GPS or ability to make a VoIP call or something. This user is thinking "WOW" - for us non-legit users though, it is a pain.

I'm thinking about the N95 8GB though...just saw it in action (IT PLAYS QUAKE!!!) and it's is a sick, sick unit...

Personally, I like the challenge of always having to unlock and re-hack the iPhone.
Makes you appreciate it so much more!

Seriously. It's annoying, but at the same time stops me from getting bored with the device (I can't believe that's happened so quickly).

If it never had to be hacked again, I wouldn't hook it up to my PC so often.

haha so true!

Yes, I agree that the device really does get boring once the novelty of the interface wears off - It becomes an iPod that occasionally interrupts you with a phone call. And it's always during an awesome Kelly Clarkson song
