My plight and really need some help.

I have an 8gb unit that i purchased back in September from a local AT&T store. A "friend" said he could activate it without going thru iTunes however my service provider is AT&T so I let him and all was good. When the last update came out the "friend" said let me take care of your phone because he knew how to do it. You know where that went. My fault, no gripes and I'll take the told you so's. Since I don't know a thing about what the activation is and apparently either does or did my friend, I want my phone back so it will work again. So not to appear that I'm taking a shortcut but I read almost all of the postings and didn't find exactly anything matching my circumstances however i could be wrong.

Here is what I have and I would really like some guidance as to what i need to do this myself or a name of someone that I can pay to ressurect my iphone.

No phone
No Wifi

imei is 004999010640000
modem firmware 04.01.13_G

iTunes is 7.4.2 running on a Mac

I was told it was activated, jailbroke but never sim unlocked because I have AT&T service.
iTunes shows me the Name, Capacity, Software Version and Serial #, The phone # shows n/a. The two buttons for update and restore are active and not grayed out.
