I was struck wondering after reading the NY Times piece today how much convergence Apple and Google bubble up.

Here's to what I'm sure will be a very interesting forum division!

Phone Battle!, my friend

Google Beats Apple LOL

seriously though i think it will better then the iPHONE

This will be a tough comparison. The android UI will be on multiple types of phone. How can you compare the effectiveness of the UI on say a samsung slider with a 9 key pad versus an all touchscreen iphone? Besides the Java UI looks to be changeable on top of the linux kernel, so I don't know how much continuity will really exist between devices / carriers.

My wild guess is it'll be the best at first on fones that have a robust browser since it's seems that it'd make most sense for it to be browser-based. Otherwise, Jobs may have to oust Schmidt from the board!

The IPhone is probably better right now but the GPhone(OS) platform has every opprotuntiy to be the best out for years to come.

Google has been open right off the bat, so the UI could go whichever way people want in reality. So its hard to judge But in the end, while Apple's is nice, Google will do better in the long run unless Apple's eventually released SDK makes for some interesting things by others

i believe that apple with NOT be outdone by google. I'm all for the google android platform. But seeing as the iphone will soon have its native sdk, its gonna be an all out geek battlefield. I'm all geeked up over these 2 frameworks.

I forsee many sleepless nights of coding ahead of me.

Google will do it again. They are always on top.

Webkit is part of the android software stack. Iphone has nothing special about their browser. Safari is the GUI for Webkit rendering.

I want the ability to choose my own UI. If android was open, I could choose between GTK, QT, javafx, and e17; now it is whatever google or the manufacturer dictates. Of course you're free to do what ever in your java sandbox.

Apple's...with only one piece of hardware, Apple can make it better.

Iphone FTW!!

This is a baseless comparison. Android is designed to be device agnostic and run on a variety of handsets and form factors. The UI can change to suit the host device.

What Apple has done is create an elegant interface that is intimately tied to equally elegant hardware. It will be some time before other takers can usurp this menagerie.

This isn't a case of apples and oranges, pun not intended. It's more a case of mule (workhorse) versus Lamborghini.

it's worth noting(although i suspect that you already know) that the technology for safari came from khtml, which was first developed for konqueror, the default browser for kde(before kde 4).
i believe that webkit and khtml are merging soon, and is being moved into QT.

my vote here goes to android.

Let me qualify my earlier statement: By being inherently device agnostic, the potential is there for the Android UI to by as dynamic and flexible as it needs to. This give it every POTENTIAL to usurp the iPhone UI.

But without equally elegant hardware, it isn't going to likely be soon.
