Which Instant Messaging program to use?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Gmedalion

I have tried Mundo and hate it since it sucks up battery extremely fast and cuts off the message when the message gets too long on my Tilt. Anyone has other reviews on other programs? Agile or Octrotalk?

Thanks

IM+ is nice.

Posted by: zephxiii

i've been looking for something as well, im+ seems to be the best bet but costs money.would't mind finding something free.

Posted by: kareem9nba

am i allowed to post a link to the full version here or no?

Posted by: elite_is3

if its Pirated NO, so dont

Posted by: Gmedalion

Doesn't IM+ suck up battery life quickly as well? This is what I heard.

Posted by: Shadowless127

I use IM+ on my mogul and love it. My mom also uses it on her Axim x51v and likes it a lot.

Posted by: Keland44

i also use im+ its pretty good other then the occasional lockups it gives my phone but then again i have a tweaked out 8125 so that's probably wht it acts up

Posted by: Gmedalion

How's IM+ with battery life b/c Mundu eats battery life faster than anything i've seen.

How about the other programs out there? Anyone deal with Agile or Octrotalk?

Posted by: Pops_G

Dont use Octro, I tried it. If you have a gmail account it will modify lots of your contacts and make gmail unresponsive. It also changes your MSN contacts. Its evil.

Posted by: SuperRob64

It's not the program that's eating your battery life ... it's the data connection it's using. Switch to Edge and/or GPRS, and you'll do a lot better.

Posted by: irockash

The OZ Mobile IM program for the 8525 from ATT sucks... I don't even care that it uses text messages, it just won't work right on the phone. Or at least it won't work right for me, after I hide it, I can't open it back up.

Posted by: avega1027

Use a bandswitch program when using IM+ etc, set it to edge/gsm instead of UMTS.

Posted by: Gmedalion

Is there any program that I can keep the 3g and not suck the life out of my battery? I only really want to run AIM. I used a Sidekick before

What is the reason you want to be using 3G(while idle) instead of EDGE when using a chat program?

Posted by: zephxiii

yea keeping 3g is silly when idle. on another note, im+ likes to freeze my 8125, disappointing .

Posted by: irockash

I dont like the idea of switching back and forth between EDGE and 3G. It takes too long, especially when you want quick access to things.

Posted by: Pops_G

Such is life. Sometimes you have to make choices and compromise.

Option A) Leave 3G radio enabled = Low Battery life
Option B) Disable 3G radio = Slower browsing, IM and email shouldn't have a noticeable speed difference.
Option C) Switch between radios as needed. It just takes a little more effort.

Which drawback can you live with?

Posted by: zephxiii

i hate im+, it locks up my phone, drags it down, and sucks in general. i'll be looking for something else here shortly.

I just use Windows Live Messenger and it works great.

One HUGE problem though..... It appears when you chat, each IM counts as a text message on AT&T instead of using your unlimited data.

Why is that?

T-Mobile did not charge that and I do not care for an SMS plan.

that is NOT true. it uses data, it's a third party app so it does use data, not text messages.

Posted by: lildogg

the windows live messenger that comes with the tilt does count every message as a text message.

Posted by: zephxiii

I've been using something called palringo, it supports at least yahoo and AIM plus more. has worked reliably for the most part so far, probably not the most feature packed client, but it hasn't caused any problems yet.

I used Windows Live Messenger on my phone a lot. I'm looking at my bill for the month, and I don't see any charges for text messages related to it. So unless I'm missing something, I'm 98% sure they do NOT count as SMS. I think thats one of the main reasons ATT did not include it with the phone. And thats why I love windows mobile. Power to the user!

Anyone else have input on this issue?

WLM does not use text msgs, it uses data. I am 100% sure since I use it all the time and have used it on my 8525(w/WM6) & have never gotten billed for addtitional text messages.

Posted by: kareem9nba

yea WLM is great...i love every aspect of it...i wish there was a separate program for AIM like it.

Posted by: jomo25

To clear up any confusion:

Windows Live Messenger DOES NOT use SMS msgs.

OZ Messenger DOES use SMS msgs.

Posted by: JETninja

Quick Question, Maybe I'm searching wrong but how can I get WLM on my 8525? (it has the ATT WM6 Rom on it, I do not see WLM on it, and a quick look at WM site did not find it..)

Sorry to burst everyone's bubble, but Window's Live Messenger does use/charge SMS/text messages for each IM sent or received on AT&T (T-Mobile does not).

I wish I was wrong, but here is proof from my bill. I even confirmed this with data support after challenging it:

Quote:
Data Detail xxx-xxx-xxxx
User Name : XXXX XXXXX
Rate Code: TMI1=Text Msg Pay Per Use, KRB4=BMPDABBRYUNL
Rate Period (PD): AT=Anytime
Feature: SMH=SMS per msg $0.15 MO/MT - new rate, GPRR=GPRS not roaming $0.00 rate
Item Day Date Time To/From Type Msg/KB/Min Rate Code Rate Pd Feature In/ Out Total Charge
1 MON 10/08/2007 12:00PM xxx-xxx-xxxx MSN IM 1 Msg TMI1 AT SMH In 0.15
2 MON 10/08/2007 12:00PM xxx-xxx-xxxx MSN IM 1 Msg TMI1 AT SMH Out 0.15

Posted by: Pops_G

The funny part is your post only confirms to me that it does not charge. Because I use Windows Live Messenger, and I have no such charges on my bill. Did you ever use another IM app at any point? Thats all I can think of.

What are you talking about? Re-read the bill and you will see it is $0.15 each!

I don't want to use any other IM app as Windows Live Messenger is the best IMHO.

Posted by: Pops_G

You didnt understand my post?

I see that you got charged for IMs. That is established. Now I am saying that I use WLM to send IMs and I do not get charged like you do.

My conclusion it that WLM does NOT result in IM fees from ATT.

Perhaps you have a different version of WLM that does charge? Or a setting to send messages as SMS checked? I think there is an option to do that when offline... Im not sure and I dont have the phone with me.

Posted by: kareem9nba

where did you get the bill from?

Posted by: lildogg

ok let me clear this up. the wlm that comes on the tilt is part of the att bloatware. i think it is called oz messenger plugin. if you use that wlm, it would charge every message as sms. but if you download an im client like im plus or mundo and use wlm, then thats data.

Posted by: Pops_G

www.wireless.att.com

After reviewing Chix bill vs my bill again. I noticed that it seems like Chix doesnt have a plan that includes any messages. They are all pay per use. Now I am not sure that is the only issue here, because I dont have any with the type of "MSN IM". Chix lists 2 with that type. My bill doesnt even define that type for me.

Quote:
Rate Code: TMI1=Text Msg Pay Per Use, 4N1C=MEDIA MAX 200 MSGS, MBRC=MEDIA MAX UNL MNET, MKT2=TextMessaging, MUEN=Multimedia Messaging
Rate Period (PD): AT=Anytime
Feature: SMH=SMS per msg $0.15 MO/MT - new rate, GPRR=GPRS $0.00 rate APN002, SMI=MKT SMS $0.25 MO International Intercarrier, MMI=MMS MO $0.50 per msg - International

I dont have any of the ATT bloatware installed, and I just used the WLM linked to in the sticky on this forum.

Exactly. That's right. People usually refer to WLM as being the 3rd party app. OZ is another way to use the messenger, people just don't call it "WLM"

But the issue seems to be that if you do not have a text message plan such as Media Max, you will be charged for IM's whether it is WLM or OZ.

That seems to be the case at least for me.

I was looking for a way to get Yahoo Messenger and that only since my business sector uses that only....

Posted by: Gmedalion

Im still not happy with Mundu and IM+ doesn't sound appealing. Anyone with expirence with Agile?

Posted by: kareem9nba

Honestly, none are good but the originals. The 3 in 1 or w/e combos are all horrible.

Not to reserect a month old thread, but u can use Windows Live Messenger with a Yahoo messenger ID. yahoo and Microsoft are "joining forces" on the IM front.

hopefully u have already figured this out in the month since you posted your above question.

CMM.

I have heard that a IM called SLICK is a good one to use and also free.

Yes, I get charged per message using the preinstalled IM of my ATT TILT.
