BlackJack WM6 Technical Thread

Ok so I'm trying to see if we can move some of the traffic here for Installs, Software Installs, et cetera

Posted by: CocheseUGA

Very good idea.

Please, SOMEONE, list the differences (both positive and negative) for all the different working radio and PDA versions out there. It would help those of us who are on the fence about upgrading.

Posted by: txcaesar

All, if ppl will email me their pluses/minuses so that I can also create a sticky. I would like to use this for specific issues of "I can't run this" or "I get this error"

Thanks to ALL for making this forum so alive!

Ive updated the site

Posted by: fogleroller

I noticed that when the original beta version was leaked, I was getting "H" (HSDPA) instead of 3G when web browsing and downloading. I was getting close to 1mbps. Now I only see 300kbps if I am lucky and it only shows 3G. Maybe AT&T turned off HSDPA on their towers? Anyone else experience this?

A. To start off the Original "About" and "Version" in Settings, information from a Blackjack that was bought in November of 2006 indicates without any changes or updates as follows:

About

Windows Mobile 5.0 with the Messaging and Security Feature Pack
OS 5.1.342 (Build 15100.3.0.2)
Radio Version i607UCFJE
RIL Version 2.002
C 1996-2006
Operator: 5.1.342.15100
Manufacturer : 5.1.342.15100
Microsoft: 5.1.342.15100
Language: 5.1.342.15100
File System: 5.1.342.15100

Version

PDA Version: i607UCFJE
Phone Version : i607UCFJE
H/W version: REV0.0
Eboot version: i607UCFJE

Pros:

1. Upper characters display properly when key held;
2. End Key consistently works to put phone into lock and end calls in all situations;
3. PIE page scrolls smoothly including early while page loading;
4. Scrolling pages is smoother/quicker in programs such as Outlook E-Mails;
5. Good Mobile Messengering Works;
6. Battery Performance at least Average, no major incidents of heat ups;
7. Radio Performance at least Average, may depend on your area;
8. Some programs still currently only work on Mobile 5 such as MSNBC.Com Mobile
9. Starts up with Cingular promo instead of AT&T ( )
10. Is branded "Cingular"
11. Internet Share Works allowing phone as Modem but battery charges from computer with USB connection or can connect via BlueTooth (and can plug in phone to be powered by A/C)

Cons:

1. Has none of the benefits of Mobile 6 such as html e-mail, improved Task list, changes to Contacts and Calender, working with Exchange Server 2007 (although Office Mobile .Cab later available but this .cab does not open consitently Office 2007 items without 6.1 patch);
2. Had issue with International Roaming prompting the first upgrade put up on March 22, 2007 on the Samsung Support site which kept phone a Mobile 5 phone;
3. Displays signal as G, E and 3G with no H when in high speed data transfer
4. Major Bluetooth compatibility problems, reported not to work with many systems.

Please feel free to add to, clarify, modify or offer different perspective, its just a quick off the top of my head list so we have a starting point of what did the first version do and not do, esp. since we can mix and match the radio version vs. the PDA version.

----------------------------------------------------------------

B. If you update your original Mobile 5 phone or go back and fully flash all aspects with the file currently available at Samsung Support (File Name is BlackJack_Update.zip and is 52.0 MB added March 22, 2007) your phone will be Mobile 5 and state as follows:

PDA: i607UCGB4
Phone: i607UCGB4

http://www.samsungwireless.com/tech...i607_patch.html

Pros: 1. Same as above for original Mobile 5 phone;
2. International Roaming has been improved in some way in certain countries;

Cons: 1. Same as above for original Mobile 5 phone but International Roaming issue removed as a cons since it was improved in this version.
2. Some noted Radio acted differently from original but issue not fully documented or quantified.

I have my second phone flashed with the first leaked Mobile 6 that appears to be dated in April but was leaked in late May, 2007 and most of us flashed it in early June, 2007, but it is with a family member till 3pm so someone else can fill that info. in.

ok, so are you telling me that when your in word or excel mobile, the pixel app comes up?
I was hoping to take the load off the other thread as it really is something completely different...that and trying to make a repository that ppl can search for things tips, et cetera...

Posted by: MobileServer

Mine (with PDA ver I3) works just fine for both MS Word and Excel.
When I select either an Excel or Word file, WM6 open either Word Mobile or Excel Mobile accordingly.
No more opening with Picsel Viewer.

Posted by: iceninecynic

I put the newest WM6 rom on my BJ, so I synced all my stuff before doing so.
Previously, my BJ's name was Ice9s Smartphone
After loading the OS, and changing my name back to Ice9s smartphone, I plug it into my computer to get all my contacts and it tells me that name is in use, so I either have to rename it, or use guest.
I eventually clicked rename, so it made the profile WM_Ice9
but I didn't get the contacts. So I did some research and saw that others with similar problems just uninstalled and reinstalled AS and they were good to go.
I've tried that but every time I plug the BJ into the computer, it changes the name back to WM_Sales.

Anybody know how I can get the contacts that were listed under Ice9s smartphone?

Posted by: iceninecynic

I can get it so it isn't renaming my device, however, it still says

"The mobile device that is currently connected has the same name as another device. To use the existing parthership for the current device, you must give the device a new, unique name. Otherwise the device will be set up as Guest."

This is getting frustrating. Uninstalled and reinstalled AS countless times and even reloaded the ROM to see if that would help.
Any ideas?

SUMMARY OF BLACKJACK ROM VERSIONS

1. Original Blackjack Mobile 5 Version (Cingular Branded with File Dates mostly October, 2006).

Currently No ROM file available, it was/is on most Blackjacks out of the Box when new or refurbished. Has a few bugs/shortcomings such as problematic Bluetooth Stack. Most who have done no upgrading have this version:

PDA Version: i607UCFJE
Phone Version : i607UCFJE
(October, 2006)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. First/Only Official WM5 Minor Update So Far Provided by Samsung on March 22, 2007.

This first updated ROM provides for Minor changes only with support to fix International Roaming issue in a few countries. This is a Windows Mobile 5 ROM still, and remains available to download at Samsung Support (see link below). Very little difference from #1. above besides the international roaming fix. Some claimed changes with Radio but not confirmed. Anyone wishing to go back to Mobile 5 can obtain this file and fully re-flash all aspects of a Blackjack and the Versions will be as follows (you cannot go back to number 1 versions above at this time, but no known major reasons to do so, both are fully WM5):

PDA: i607UCGB4
Phone: i607UCGB4
(March 22, 2007 patch date)

http://www.samsungwireless.com/tech...i607_patch.html

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. This is the first leaked early AT&T Branded beta version of Windows Mobile 6 for the Blackjack.

This version was first leaked/discovered in late May, 2007 and news of its availability posted at HOFO on June 1, 2007. It has files dated March and up to April 21, 2007 and changes branding/startup etc... to AT&T. It has several improvements that Mobile 6 offers, but had new issues not in either of the two Mobile 5 versions discussed above, such as no working Internet Sharing, Holding Keys does not produce upper character (must use Fn button instead), Scrolling in PIE and other programs is jerky/slower, many reported initial hot batteries which would go away, and many reported issues with the Red End Call button not ending calls in all situations and not always locking keys. It did not fix any of the major bugs in WM5 such as Bluetooth stack. It also put a file limit size on MP3 songs used as ringtones, but this is easily fixed by a Registry edit. This ROM performs a complete Flash of all aspects and those that applied this and nothing else have the following versions:

PDA: i607UCGD2
Phone i607UCGD2
(April 21, 2007)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. The Second Leaked Windows Mobile 6 for Blackjack beta Version.

This was initially discovered on about November 1, 2007 in this post with link to download site (http://howardforums.com/showpost.ph...49&postcount=41). It showed files dated as late as June 07, 2007 and build numbers showed work had been done, but still no Internet Sharing/Connection working, the upper characters still require Fn to display and Bluetooth still not fully working. This was a full flash ROM like numbers 2 and 3 above and those who have applied this show versions as follows:

PDA: i607UCGF1
Phone: i607UCGF1
(June 07, 2007)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

5. The integra95gsr Mobile 6 Blackjack Phone with more recently updated Mobile 6 beta Version.

This version (making it the 3rd WM6 beta known of) was discovered when HoFo member integra95gsr posted on October 29th, 2007 (http://howardforums.com/showthread....09&page=1&pp=15) that he had just bought a Blackjack from an eBay raffle and it had Windows Mobile 6 on it. It turns out that version is dated September 11, 2007 and appears to have been flashed by someone at (or who knew someone) working with Microsoft and Beta Testing aspects of the efforts to provide an official WM6 upgrade for the Blackjack. So far only one known person publically has the full ROM version of this phone, and there is no FULL ROM file as there was with the 2 previous leaked versions. His phone has more progress, it is stable, upper characters do display upon holding keys, and the End Key works consistently as it did in Mobile 5 versions. It is reported that Microsoft Office Mobile, Word, Excel do properly open files made in Office 2007 without need of a Patch 6.1. Sadly, Bluetooth issues remain and NO working ICS. His phone displays as follows:

PDA: i607UCGI3
Phone: i607UCGI3
(September 11, 2007)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

6. The first Da G PDA ROM Upgrade built from the Integra95gps Phone

This is an essentially uncooked PDA only upgrade to the Windows Mobile 6 PDA portions on the phone that integra95gps discovered had more recent beta Mobile 6 on it. It was reconstructed by Da G in an amazing effort and series of fairly difficult procedures using a dump that integragps performed on his phone and released on Sunday evening November 04, 2007 in this post with link here on HoFo (http://www.howardforums.com/showpos...&postcount=1474). Those performing this update need to APP-UNLOCK their phones to relaod most applications as it was discovered the security has been raised in this version.

Blackjacks who perform this upgrade will change only their PDA version, the phone version will stay the same as it is before performing the procedure so you will correctly be showing two different versions (this is as intended/normal) and will display:

PDA: i607UCGI3
(September 11, 2007)

Phone: Any of versions listed for 1 thru 4, but not version 5 (i607UCGI3)
(date of your phone version depending on if from 1, 2, 3 or 4 listed above)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

7. The Da G cooked Alpha 1 using only the PDA portion of version i607UCGI3

This version was first made available this afternoon/evening (November 07, 2007) and has changes/improvements to the original PDA only WM6 version i607UCGI3 that are described here with link to its download loaction ( http://www.howardforums.com/showpos...&postcount=1913 ).

Blackjacks that have upgraded to the Alpha Cooked 1 will still be using (regardless of any potential display change to indicate its an Alpha 1 Cooked ROM) the September 11, 2007 PDA version i607UCGI3 and the versions indicate as follows:

PDA: i607UCGI3
(September 11, 2007 with cooking by Da G on November 07, 2007)

Phone: Any of versions listed for 1 thru 4, but not version 5 (i607UCGI3)
(date of your phone version depending on if from 1, 2, 3 or 4 listed above, the fact it will be a different version than PDA version is normal)

Still running the 9/11 ROM. Maybe I'm nuts, but is the battery life actually improved with over OEM? I went all day yesterday on the small battery, and the small battery meter still read full. The detailed meter under the Task Manager reported about 90% life! Normally I charge every night, sitting at about 60% battery life at the end of the day.

Last night I left the phone on and running as normal all night.

This morning, the battery meter is showing about 85% remaining. Is this for real? Seems significantly improved from the stock ROM! Could it be a matter of the meter not being calibrated correctly? I'm just going to keep going until the battery dies, we'll see what happens.

except for WM5, I have them all on my site

I forgot to mention that one big benefit to the Mobile 6 ROM's is that they seem to enable use of the Higher Capacity microSD cards on the Blackjack, allowing you to go over the 2GB limit. We should try and get confirmation ROM version by ROM version of which allow going over the 2GB and which do not. I assume that the first two Windows Mobile 5 DO NOT, but that all Mobile 6 versions DO? Anyone got info. to add to this presumption?

Kevad, I read somewhere else that you are correct; I am googling to find where the heck I read that. :-)

Right after I bought my BJ, I got a 6GB SDHC card. Couldn't for the longest time figure out what I had to do to get it to work. Only after digging did I find out I couldn't use it.

After updating to the current WM6 build (UCGF1/UCGI1) did I discover I had access to my card and have access to all 6GB of storage!! =-D

Updates to the Repository (dan.omefilms.com) . Please be sure to give me feedback. I really want this site to be helpful to all

I currently have the new ROM running on my phone and have some how created a new issue. Opera Mobile won't stay running, it closes out with no error messages with in minutes of starting. I also can't use Mobile Config from Ryan Rife which worked on the first WM6 release. I can not change the fields. Any ideas or do I need to go back a version?

I wish I could help with mobile, but im using Opera Mini, which has done fine for me. I will dl and install mobile to see if I can replicate it. what error is it giving you for the Mobile Config software? (BTW is that free sw and if so, will you email me so that I can upload it to the Repository?)

This is where I'm confused. To get the most out of my Blackjack I should download the GI3 file...? Does this contain an updated radio? Which radio is best? Some say F1, others say D2. Will I need to app unlock after each CAB of my programs are loaded?

I'm normally not this slow, but I don't plan on getting my 8525 until after Christmas - I don't want to be without all my features until then.

Cochese, youre not slow, it is a bit confusing. the G13 does NOT have an updated Radio, but from my experience F1 has been the best, at least for me. the G13 file is an update on the PDA side of the BJ, with nothing to the Radio side of it.

If you already knew this and I'm being repetitive, I apologize, just trying to help

Posted by: CocheseUGA

No, that answers a lot of my question. The next thing would be, how do I update the radio to F1?

Posted by: txcaesar

I have updated the Repository dan.omefilms.com with more links, more SW and a step by step with pictures of how to upgrade.

I have also put the WM5 ROM up there for those that need or want to flash back.

Please give me feedback

So to get the F1 radio, I need to upgrade to the F1 ROM, then the I3 ROM?

That's correct. FYI, I've been running the F1/I3 combo now since I3 was created (THANKS ALL) and it's been extremely stable. I actually think the F1 radio improved my reception and I3 improved battery life, among all the other things people have been boasting about.

Posted by: CocheseUGA

Thank you SO much, I've been trying to get an answer to that.

I shall try it tonight and hope I'm not the unlucky one to brick their phone.

Posted by: ErylFlynn

It doesn't give me an error just *POOF* gone right out from under me. I am concerned I did some thing, it seemed fine at first then after looking around and trying to start a few apps in the windows directory it started. But I may have missed it before.

Posted by: KewlRobD

I just noticed some items in my startup that I don't recognize.

a shortcut called configxml, 50# "\windows\configxml.exe"Windows/configxml.exe /windows/imeiconfig.xml

A shortcut called timewizard, 16#timewizard.exe and seems to do nothing but type the letter E

A shortcut called lpad, #windows\loadpreaddressbook.exe

Anyone know what these are about

Posted by: Da_G

loadpreaddressbook.exe is to load up the numbers into your phonebook like *DATA, *MIN, etc

timewizard.exe doesnt exist

configxml is designed to support multiple operators, to make it easier to load different settings (i600 uses this, not i607)

Okay, I'm trying to re-flash to the F1 to get the radio update, but when I run the app and boot the phone to flash mode, I get an error when I click start that says "Select an Image to Download"

Woops, meant to put this in the other wm6 thread, but I guess it works here too.

Unless I missed something... the latest Radio you can install was the last one packaged with a Full Flasher (SGH_i607_UCGF1.exe) ...The more recent I3 ROMs (both cooked & original) do not include the radio because they were dumped using a process that only extracted the PDA portion. This is why the later versions released contained more than one single file within the package... instead of being a single executable updater (like the file name referenced above) the newer stuff requires a .bin image and the Old i600 individual component Flasher.

Hope this helps.

That's what I'm trying to do. I'm running I3 right now, trying to flash back to F1. Downloaded the F1 from the 'repository' site, and run exe, but I'm getting that error.

Once I get F1 on, then I'll re-flash to I3, so as to have the latest available radio and pda roms.

Well, taking the plunge right now. The tutorial on the site is mandatory. Here's hoping it works out.

Posted by: CocheseUGA

Problem - I can't connect with mail2web now. It says check your Internet Connection settings. I tried it with both the WM5 and WM6 settings.

What should I be looking for?

Posted by: thecableguy

You don't actually restore the backup after the update (unless I missed something). The backup is just for safety. Instead, you just delete the old partnership on the PC and re-sync.

Posted by: CocheseUGA

See my revised question. Internet just started working again, and interestingly enough so did the Exchange connection.

Weird. I have no idea why it just started working again.

But, I'm all set. I'll be loading back my programs, and trying Live Search instead of Google.

...And now, not working again.

?????

If anyone else has this issue, the problem was that I had saved the flasher app to a network drive. After copying it to a local drive, it ran as expected.

..if anyone does have it, its this way: settings->connections->click on the left soft key (menu), choose advanced->in there is Media Net and the at&t one. I deleted that one.

you can use the other one as I said, so long as we have the configurations. If anyone does have it, please send or post so I can add it to the Repository Site

Posted by: CocheseUGA

OK, done. But I still get the same error.

Posted by: CocheseUGA

Nothing I've tried has worked. Now I can't connect to data at all.

May have to roll back to WM5.

Posted by: CocheseUGA

OK, did a hard reset and it appears to be working fine now.

SONOFA*****, now it's not working again. There seems to be something that triggers when I sync to my computer via bluetooth.

What the hell?

OK, it looks like I can't use data while I'm connected via BT to my computer. I'll have to try my headset tomorrow when it charges up. Hopefully that's not borked, too.

What is the default mail folder? I can't find it in my documents or anywhere in the drive root for that matter. need to delete the messages so they can go to my sd card...

Anyone else having the problem with either D2 or F1 where after everything is said and done the BJ displays:

[Phone] Active Off...
[Good] ...
Time: rolling numbers

The numbers just roll and roll looks like between 100-300. Hard to tell its so fast.

Wait, did you install the modem drivers? This happened to me before and I hadn't installed the modem drivers, so when the phone finished the PDA OS part, it just stopped at the part you're speaking of.

Installing the modem drivers beforehand allowed the flash to complete entirely. The phone should actually restart itself and boot into the OS.

Sry about the previous answer

Ah! That makes sense now that I think about it. It does try to install another set of drivers. I assumed that because the phone was fully updated (or so I thought) that wouldn't matter.

Thanks. I will try and let yall know.

I understand Cochese. Lets break this down:

with BT off and not connected via usb, you ARE able to sync with Exch svr?
with BT on, what error in the activesync log does it give for not being able to sync?

I confess, I havent had an issue with this...my phone is completely functional, however I do not use BT for connecting to pc, I do however use it for simple BT headset.

perhaps it is tied in somehow into the newest pda version, but the older radio version?

also FYI; I have updated the Repository with more software and links and a step by step picture guide that I borrowed from the samsung site.

If anyone else can think of anything they want out there let me know, Im trying hard here to create a central Repository for all :-)

It's not when I just have BT on, it's when I'm syncing with my PC.

I get:
Cannot connect with current connection settings. To check your connection settings, select Start, then Settings, then Connections.

Support code 0x85020006

I also get:
Error
Your Internet connection is not configured properly. Please verify your settings in Connections.

I only have the PC set to sync Favorites. The BJ display also lights up every minute or so.

With BT on and not connected via BT or USB to the PC, everything works fine. It's only when connected to the PC that it does this. I wonder if installing the Samsung modem driver last night possibly did it.

I'm checking some stuff on the PC side of it, but so far no luck.

Posted by: Delta5

There is a setting in Activesync on the PC that is something along the lines of, 'Allow data connection while device is connected?'

Make sure that is set to 'yes'.

Ok so now I'm stumped.

I found a site that allows the MOTO Q ppl to change their start up/shutdown to anythng they want...pics, animated gifs, etc..but of rBJ its a .dll file..so I turned that off in Registry, and when I reboot what comes up is the ms_splash.png and the carrier_splash.png.

So I found files that I wanted to replace those two (at least for the time being unitl I can figure out how to work the dll to my liking) but thing is I cant replace the files in the windows dir for permission issues...I know I can do something in dos to change the rights of my edited files so as to allow them to replace the ones in the win dir, I just cant remember how to do it...any suggestions?

Anyone know where text messages are stored in BJ with WM6?
Anyway (eg via Registry) to move them to Storage Card?

That's not it, as I've tried it both ways.

ok occasionally Ive had issues where I cannot access the network via cable activesync (ie, cannot access internet, exch wont sinc up) and i had to change my settings in IE to match that in the activesync box on the desktop..could you maybe test that out, cochese?

I can't seem to get messages to send while in pass-through. I have tried ssl encryption on outgoing messages. I'm using yahoo, its on imap.yahoo blah blah should i use the pop server? it automatically detected imap and i can receive messages fine.

I'm not sure what you mean. AS says My computer is connected to Automatic because I have cable. Not sure of any other settings you speak of.

Does anyone with WM5 have anything under VPN?

Edit: OK, I was just hooked up via USB and noticed the phone said Media Net under the Wireless Manager (where you have Bluetooth and Phone). Disconnected the USB cable, but the status didn't change. Then I switched the phone portion to off, then tried to make it turn on again (did not power cycle). What I see now is this:

Cannot execute repllog.exe.

What is this?

Hit ok, and the internet works again.

Might that file be the source?

yeah AT&T yahoo is my provider, comes with that stuff. as i said, I can receive mail fine, but it won't send.

I have plain jane Yahoo! account (not ATT Yahoo) and it works fine for me.
Was able to send/receive emails.

I let Outlook detects and get IMAP settings from Yahoo server.
Works like a charm right away.

I got it to work, apparently the wm6 message center thought the smtp address was smtp.mobile.mail; i took out the mobile part and now i can send fine. requires no ssl encryption.

What I posted is far better. An updating ticker on your homescreen.

If no one can make that work, it's not a big deal - I'll just use it on my 8525 when I get it.

Anyone see any negative results from OC'ing? Once I get all these little bugs sorted out I'm going to try it, at least for a bit. Does it take away the increased battery life some have noticed?

Great chart! However, Bluetooth is much improved in I3 (but cetainly not completely fixed).
Automatic device switching and phonebook upload to Ausi MMI works now.

I looked over the instructions on that link about moving mail to sd card and I don't have the option in poutlook to send mail to the card. Do I just add the reg keys and will that do it?

Is there any way of getting the right soft key to behave like it did in WM5, where it would change to "Message" if I had a new message and such?

I'm debating on going back to WM5, and it's not because of ICS. It's the RSK. I didn't realize how handy it was to use that as my PIE link, or seeing how I miss calls or messages.

Anyone been working on that aspect of it?

That's what's killing me right now. I can't believe they removed something that was so damn handy. Only MS could regress in usability.

OK, I can make the changes on the Chart, it sounds like 7. C & D should be changed to "NO" and 18. E Should be changed to "Partial"? If we get several confirmations and no objections I will make the changes, so please speak up.

It would be nice if we could get a consensus on Battery Life and Radio Strength for each version or compared to the original say About Same, Improved, Weaker or something, but I see people having differences which maybe area related and some of it could be this recall issue. Does anybody feel we can make a clear comment on Battery Life and/or Radio Strength for any of the ROM versions yet?

If anybody thinks of some major categories to add to the chart let me know and if we have general agreement on the YES and NO, or what to put in for each ROM then I can add them. Like Google Maps Works with?, or Vtap Works with? or Windows Live works with? If the answer is the same for all then we do not need it really I would think but if users are finding differences in some area between the different versions, speak up, make a proposal that we should point this or that out on the chart and if we get enough agreement, then I will change it?

I have only the original WM5 and the first leaked to test out and try so far, so I am going on what I am reading, anyone who has info. from your useage of the other ROMs speak up so the Chart is corrected!

Let us know and we will try and get the chart as accurate as we can.

Thanks!!!

Posted by: Delta5

I can add a couple of points...

I'm running the 'integra95gsr' release...

Google maps works as expected. Perfectly.

Battery life is improved over WM5. I've now been running this ROM for almost a week and am most certainly getting a 15-20% increase in battery life on a daily basis. I confirmed it by letting the phone run down until it ran out of power. The battery gauge isn't wrong as I suspected it might be. Somehow, by BJ is using less power now than it was before. Definitely strange. I've kept my BJ nearly 'stock' for both the OEM WM5 and new WM6 installs, so I did not have any 'strange' apps that would have been eating up power. Not on purpose, anyway.

I live in an EDGE-only data area, but this weekend I had a business trip to the nearest metro area that I know has 3G. I switched to and charged up the 'big' battery, anticipating the need. I spent a solid 8 hour day in 3G coverage (blazing fast, BTW, 800k+), constant connection to Mail2Web's exchange server, checking Gmail IMAP every 15 minutes, responding to a few important emails, sending and receiving a couple dozen text and photo messages, taking a dozen phone calls for a total of about 90 minutes of talk-time, checking HoFo for WM6 updates from time-to-time, surfing for a few restaurant reviews, checking the weather a few times, and using Google Maps for a solid 30-40 minutes. With WM5 + extended battery, after that kind of use in that area I'd have maybe 40-50% battery left at the end of the day. Yesterday, I still had 85% battery left when I got home. Amazing.

I never would have guessed it, but for me, this increase in battery life is reason enough to go-to and stick-with this ROM. Hopefully future versions (maybe the official one?) will reap the same benefits.

Posted by: Kevad007

What would be a fair Chart statement about the Blackjack's ability to perform Voice Command? My understanding would be to say something about the WM5 like "Does Not Work Properly" or "Limited Functioning" or "Very Limited Functioning". If we get agreement on a term to apply to how it worked out of the box, then let us know how if any it has changed with the newer ROM's. Right now it seems what I read is little change, although those with the latest leak let us know, should we say anything has changed, or put up "Some Improvement" or "Slight Improvement" or someting else?

First of all, thank you guys a ton for this! Such good stuff.
I just upgraded the Radio part to I607UCGF1, and the PDA to I607UCGI3. Everything is working great for me, except I can't get it to install the google maps application, I've gone at it both using the full cab through Activesync, and downloading from m.google.com/gmm. All I get is "Installation for googlemaps_compressed.cab was unsuccessful." Anyone else have this going on?

I would ask them where these versions came from, since someone had to have made them for the BlackJack. I would also use the chance to get a real answer on the release date for the official WM6.

The "I607UCGF1" Rom turned my Blackjack into a battery sucking monster. I can't make it last over eight hours using the larger capacity battery. I've turned off G3 as well as other suggested tips with no luck.

I would like to revert, but I can no longer connect via USB in re-flashing mode. It tries for a moment, then the text on the phone becomes scrambled.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Posted by: Delta5

Not surprising, but there it is....

Thanks again to txtcaesar and Da_G (and others) for your hard work on this. From a business perspective, I can understand why Samsung can't let this continue, but as a user, it's a crying shame that they and AT&T can't/won't get their act together on a WM6 update.

A plague on both their houses.

The unfinished WM6 ROM that I'm running is working beautifully for me, just a couple of loose ends that I was hoping would be tied up before this happened. Now they're not going to be tied up, and the paths back to WM5 are 'cloudy'. That's the gamble that everyone who installed this WM6 ROM took. I'm ok with that.

I'm about done playing this stupid waiting game for the BJ2 or WM6 BJ ROM from Samsung/AT&T. That MotoQ is looking awfully tempting now, as is the Tilt. Especially since Samsung is proving themselves incompetent, lazy, or ignorant in this. Guess I'll also strike them off my list of HDTV's I was considering purchasing this holiday season.

Posted by: NecroSat

Just have to throw in my 2 cents (or the towel) here too.

Sent an email to Samsung asking the status on the release and got a reply back that they were "waiting on final approval from AT&T".

Sent an e-mail to AT&T asking about it and got a reply that "they've approved it an have forwarded it to Samsung for review".

Great, love the old endless loop game.

I think its all about the Bloatware and the limited room to add so much. I too have had reliable sources saying that there have been differences of opinions about what the updgrade should fix, upgrade and add to the Mobile 6 experience. "Let me put this in", "No pull it out", "in", "out", ahhhh reminds me of my college days!

Posted by: KewlRobD

If anyone is interested I put together a collection of blank wav files named after commonly annoying sounds the blackjacks make. Simply copy any sound you want to get rid of, such as the startup and shutdown sounds, wo the windows directory and just like that the sounds will be no more.

You can download it from me here

txcaesar, sorry to hear about the bad news. We should get a group of us together and start rotating the site to different servers or something. Feel free to add the file I just linked to your site if you like.

Posted by: ErylFlynn

I was going to flash mine back to 5 using the newer update then flash back to WM6 trying to clear the issue with Opera BUT I get binary loader error on the updater straight from Samsung.

SGH_i607_GB4_Rebranding_EMR.exe is the file I am trying to us and it fails, also tried it straight from TXCaesar's site and the same thing.

Posted by: ReDRoVeR

I noticed after going to WM6 that the headset profile is nonexistant. It used to be under settings/profile. Any idea how to get that back??

Posted by: dantan98

The email response I received when I inquired. I was trying to get them to blame AT&T so I could also ask AT&T the question. Once they blamed Samsung, I was going to respond w/ the forwarded email from Samsung. Sadly, my plan was foiled. (lmao)

Here are some things I did additionally to the step-by-step of the official Samsung B4 update (for D2 or F1) and the step-by-step of Da_G (for I3) that worked on 2 different BJ's:
- Reboot PC and hard-reset Phone
- Connect the phone to a system USB port and not a hub
- Disabled my LAN card to have no internet traffic
- Disabled/Stopped Anti-Virus and Spyware scanners
- Stopped every possible program in my system tray

An update...

I've been running PDA:UCGI3 Phone:UCGB4 for over a week now. Mostly stock, I've only added Google Maps & OctroTalk. I'm still quite happy with it and have no plans to go back to WM5.

However, I do have one possible bug to report.

Is anyone else getting random, occasional data problems? It's happened to me about 4 times over the last week. Definitely not a big deal, just a minor annoyance.

I'll come to the realization that my BlackJack hasn't alerted me to email for awhile, and when I check, I will notice that my ActiveSync (connected to a mobile Exchange server) has failed and that the data connection just doesn't work for Email or PIE. I get either a 'An error has occured on the server' or 'Proxy not configured correctly' message. I'm not using any proxy servers (not even AT&T's). Cycling to Airplane mode doesn't fix it. I have to fully power-cycle the phone, and then it will work again. I shut down the phone every night, so it shouldn't be a matter of needing to reboot more often. This morning, it immediately wouldn't connect on power-up, but is now just fine after a power-cycle. My other AT&T phone's internet works just fine while this is happening, so I don't think it's a network problem.

I understand the need to reboot Windows Mobile devices from time to time (daily, in my experience), but it never had this problem with WM5.

Just curious if anyone else is experiencing anything like this?

Each time it's happened, I've checked the settings. They don't appear to be changing, nor have I tinkered with them. I just have two listed under GPRS, 'AT&T IMS' and 'Media Net' AT&T IMS: ims.cingular, and MediaNet is the standard WAP.CINGULAR. The IMS appears to be for MMS to function, and the WAP.CINGULAR are just the standard WAP settings.

As far as the apps themselves (AS, PIE, Email), I have them configured to just use 'The Internet' for access. It's just strange. I'm not tinkering with the settings and it will work fine all day, and then suddenly just not work anymore. A simple reboot seems to solve it.

Next time it happens I'll double check those settings. Thanks for the tip!

Posted by: player911

I can't get MMS messages anymore after the recent I3 update. I'm using D2 and I3.

I originally had D2... so I3 broke it somewhere. The messages come in... but it wants me to click on a link and download the images... except it just times out. The messages are coming from my friends on AT&T.

Maybe its just a setting change. Anyone?

Yes. Same error I mentioned a few posts back. About 30% of the time I can cycle the radio off and on, and it comes back. 70% of the time I have to do a power cycle.

Installed the ROM - BlackJacki607_UCGI3 on top of standard WM5. Everything is working great. Connection to my Exchange server, USB set to Modem and Tethering to my laptop and using ATT Connection Manager on Vista OS work GREAT!!
Don't need ICS as Tethering works great!

Let me know if anyone needs help with anything. It took some tweaks with the modem settings on the laptop and connection profile in ATT connection manager but its working great!

THANKS!

I've had the most recent WM6 version installed for a while and my phone has never worked better. However, there is one remainging bug that is driving me nuts. WM11 on Vista will not recognize my storage card and I cannot sync music to it (neither will napster, but I would guess the two are related.) I am going to test with my XP machine as soon as I remember to bring my cable home, but wnated to know if anyone else has expereinced a similar problem.

Posted by: Guitar1969

I am not sure if this is a glitch with the WM6 or a limitation of pocket Excel for WM6, but I received an Excel spreadsheet via an email attachment, and when I clicked on it to open it, it automatically recognized it as an excel file and pocket Excel briefly flashed on the screen and then there was a message that it couldn't open up a password protected spreadsheet. The spreadsheet is not password protected, and I was able to view it via Picsel Viewer on my Blackjack. Now I know Pocket Office apps usually require a conversion process to view(Which is done when syncing via Activesync if you move an office file onto your phone), but I would assume now Microsoft would be able to handle viewing attachments since it is their operating system, and their file format, and their app(Pocket Excel), and Picsel view can do it. Am I wrong in this. Picsel Viewer had no problem with it - I like that program.

Just wondering

Posted by: player911

I saved my attachment to MyDocuments (which is my SD card) and opened it up that way. It wasn't password protected... either.

Picsel Viewer won't check for a password because its just a viewer. Excel in an editor... which will require a password check.

I would open the file on your PC and remove all Passwords and try again. Excel Mobile doesn't have options to remove passwords on your phone... so it prolly rejects opening the file completely.

Let me know if anyone needs help with anything. It took some tweaks with the modem settings on the laptop and connection profile in ATT connection manager but its working great!

THANKS!

umm what is "att conneection manager" are you talking about the settings on the phone itself or other software? I had wm6 briefly untill i found out there is no "ICS" went back to five

Thanks

Posted by: player911

Well you don't really need ICS anymore really.

Vista doesn't support it either.

You can set your phone up as a usb broadband modem through Vista and it will utilize the broadband 3G network... I guess.

I haven't done it, but I've read into it.

Someone would be highly regarded throughout the community if they would right up a walkthrough for the i607.org wiki

Has anyone found issues with the MMS messages. I posted the question earlier with no response.

Posted by: Kevad007

According to a BJII owner, he has connected his new phone to his PC using the USB modem method and gotten onto the Internet via his phone as a modem AND the phone while so connected was charging/powered by the USB connection just like it would in ICS. If this is the same in WM6 on the BJ the lack of ICS would be minimal. Also on Samsungs site it says the BJII can make a Bluetooth DUN connection and act a Modem. Has anyone with the beta Mobile 6 for the BJ tried these methods, esp. USB Modem to see if there is a way that the power/charging still occurs. In WM5 this method there is no charging/powering so that you have a limited time and that is why ICS was so important, it did charge while providing Internet Sharing.

Posted by: KSUJace

I got ICS (well not ICS) but tethering to work on the BJII , you can go to stat/settings/connections/usb , change to modem, then in networking added a new dial up connection , used:
Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Dial *99#

Posted by: Kevad007

When connected in this manner is the phone powered by the USB connector and charging? That is the big problem with the BJ, when using the modem setting it does not power/charge, but when using the ICS program it does. Another BJII owner said in the BJII he was getting power/charging while in Modem mode and his PC was getting Internet from the BJII, what are you seeing with your connection, power or not?

Posted by: juanchohq

Does any one using a BlackJack upgraded to WM6 unlocked to use with other provider than AT&T? thanks. Regards.
Juan

Posted by: ol2

I have the BJII and can confirm that it charges in "modem" mode. So this does reduce the need for ICS, but it would still be nice to have ICS for when you don't have a USB cable.

Posted by: Jnowak1981

Ok How the **** do I set this thing up to work as a modem? I just got a BJ2 - installed the modem drivers. But can't get it to work.

I tried doing it both ways - by dial up (according to at&t's website) - when I do that it dials, and then doesn't register the computer on the network (error 718 or 619 or something)

The second way I tried doing it was witht he ATT Communication Manager and it doesn't work.

Anyhone?

Help.

According to the Samsung BJII ad site where it has the FAQs, one of them says that you can set up a Bluetooth DUN connection and have the BJII act as a wireless modem. I do not have a BJII to try what they are saying.

CAN SOMEONE WITH A BJ and the latest leaked Mobile 6 try using the USB modem method and see if like the BJII, the battery now charges. If it does this reduces the need for ICS quite a bit! My WM6 BJ is with a family member out of town thru Sunday, so someone try it please.

Da_G, perhaps what could be done instead of trying to get ICS to work on these Mobile 6 leaked ROMs would be to find the Registry or programming that was turning off the battery charger when the BJ was using the other method of USB Modem in setup to provide the Internet. According to these early BJII users, the battery DOES CHARGE when the BJII is connected to a computer as a Modem, which was why we BJ users always preferred ICS. By the way, I checked on store units Wed. both the Moto Q9h and Pantech DUO have ICS working in a WM6 setup, maybe a dump eval. would reveal the answers. However, rather than continue to tear hair, and try to find a perhaps needle in a haystack, lets see if we can get power/charging in the USB Modem connect mode, and maybe someone can figure out how to setup a Bluetooth DUN connect to have the BJ act as a wireless modem, and ICS becomes unnecessary.

Yes there is software from ATT that helps in connecting your BlackJack Version One to the internet via tethering. Just do a Search on Att Connection Manager. This also works on Vista.

Thanks!

When I'm tethering my battery charges up. I just doubled check!!!
I'm using BlackJacki607_UCGI3 ROM and Vista Ultimate with the lastest version of http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmob...vicecenter.mspx
for Vista.(Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 for Windows Vista).
Here is the link to: ATT CONNECTION MANAGER - http://www.wireless.att.com/busines...tup-ACM-6.6.exe

Do you guys want me to write a step by step process up here for you guys to try to follow to see if you can get your BJ to work?

Thanks!

Thanks!

Posted by: djhome23

I have posted the process I used to Tether my BJ. Check the forum listing or click here for a step by step process:

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1281905

Also in my last post I said while tethering my BJ was charging. It DOES NOT. I was in ACTIVESYNC mode on the USB connection on the device.

Thanks!

the one listed here:

doesnt appear to be on the server anymore.

has anyone been able to install software onto their blackjack after an upgrade to wm6?

Posted by: pgens

I have installed a few utilities like TotalCommander, as well as some apps like iSilo, Mobipcoket Reader and TCPMP.

I am having trouble in one area... I SIM-unlocked the BJ and used to be able to use it with my T-Mobile prepaid SIM. Now with the latest WM6 I can boot the phone with the T-Mobile SIM but get No Service. I didn't get a prompt to re-unlock the unit so it still appears to be unlocked. Anyone have luck with T-Mobile on a SIM-unlocked BJ after the WM6 update?

edit to add: I figured it out... I have BandSel on 850-only, and when I threw it back to Auto T-Mobile service worked fine.

txcaesar (Dan),

Thank you so much for your herculean efforts (along with Da_G and the rest of the gang) for all you've done to bring many solutions for us BJ users that AT&T couldn't or wouldn't provide. Please keep up the good and helpful work on your Repository.

I want to reiterate my gratitude to Da_G and txcaesar - you have kept the community busy with the unofficial ROM. And you have made many happy. Shame on you, at&t.
Have been using I3 since it became available, and have nooooo issues whatsoever. Using exchange daily, browsing, added all my usual programs, backed up, added some not so good ones, restored, and am still using it!!!
Keep up the good work!!!!! Thanks again!!!!

Posted by: pgens

I agree with the above sentiments. It was a neat turn of events that got this release to us and I3 has worked well enough for me that I rarely check on the status of an offical WM6 update. Yeah I'll apply it when/if it gets released, but now I don't really need to care when/if an official WM6 release happens. Thanks guys!

Posted by: txcaesar

I have done some minor updates, but I still cant get the pics to show in the instructions on how to flash the phone, so I'm still working on that...

..and I, always being the one to flaunt in the face of authority...:-), cannot seem to get the back door locked on my site http://dan.omefilms.com so unfortunately, if some poor souls stumble on the link http://dan.omefilms.com/apps they will see the Da_G Rom sitting there as well as the other ones...shucks, darn geewillikers whatever can I do?

pass the word on my site, and keep sending me emails of things you'd like to see...I'm thinking of creating a page to host mobile homescreens and the like...

You have to AppUnlock the blackjack before you can install Apps. You can thank AT&T for that one. I guess they're trying to further restrict what we can do with our phones.

Why would anyone want to buy a PDA that you can't install anything on without first hacking the thing? (aside from the iPhone lol).

I like to think of it as an intelligence test. If you can't run a search for info, hook up the phone, and run a simple executable maybe you shouldn't be deciding what will work and what won't on the BJ

Not slamming anyone for asking questions about it of course, just offering an entertaining reason.

If I could get Windows Live on WM5, I'd probably switch back. It's nothing against the hacked ROMs, but I think overall the final WM6 won't have the features I like (dynamic RSK, etc).

I have it at my site COchese, and also it works on wm6 fine for me

Posted by: Kevad007

I have used the Windows Live version on the TX's site and it worked great most of the time, and is way better than the old Pocket MSN, however I did have a few hang-ups and got the spinning color wheel sometimes for long periods. It seems that in a few combinations with other programs running or certain situations I can not pin down, it would act up a bit. I removed it and all those issues went away. Tried it on a second BJ and it pretty much would do the same thing. Once again, it worked fine 90% of the time, I just noted on a few occasions I saw some issues which "seem" to be related to Windows Live, but not 100% sure.

It is nice in that on WM6 you get HTML e-mail and Instant Messenger worked fairly well and is laid out fairly nicely.

If others try this Windows Live (beta hack?) let us know if you notice any occasional issues. Again, it works mostly, but seemed to have a few occasion specific issues on the BJ I.

All I can do is sit back, smile and greatly admire the wonderful work(s) of Da G, txcaesar (Dan)....and other great members......Great stuff and I recall with great fondness when I had my old dated WinXP Notebook, how I use to 'heavily browse' the various Aqua emulation forums, to make my (completely disliked cartoonish XP GUI) into a work of 'Aqua art'....
Tweakig the shell32.dll, to the max and really having a blast!

This is 'on a different level'.........and I still have not taken the plunge to flash my present WM5 ROM......but I am mighty tempted.....
Definately with the outstanding, organized charts, feedback from our great members......I may do it soon.......
However, I was 'playing the Samsung/AT&T advisory game' with a bunch of my Blackjack devices........(All the darn units sent to moi were in the Nov. 06-Jan. 07 manufactured time frame)......and I finally received a 07.07 dated one.....and am now pleased that my past 'poor reception, drop call nightmare' has ended.....

Lets all hope that the official WM6 ROM comes out within the near future....aka....before 1st quarter of 08'.....
Thanks to you all!!!

Hmm. I just couldn't find a download for it and the WM6 ROM was the first I was able to use it.

I just love the RSK too much to stick with WM6. Also, my custom homescreen I did in Facade doesn't work with WM6 for some reason.

I understand that Cochese, I really liked the RSK as well...well I hope the final does come out...if not, well the one out there is pretty good.

Did you try the latest version of Facade (1.31)? Works just fine for me.

Anyone have problems saving contacts with I3? Says an error in the program has occurred.

Posted by: pgens

Did it work on a version of WM6 prior to I3? Or did you go to I3 direct from WM5? If you went direct, see this post where I describe a similar problem and my solution:

Thanks bbc581 for this information.....as I was 'slightly confused' with the various WM6 ROM versions.....but Kevad007, did a great job with a 'comparative analysis' in his post # 12 on pg 1 on this thread....
Believe me, I have read/reviewed the entire, elongated 150+ pg thread of the 'Blackjack WM6 Update on AT&T Forums' thread.....and txcaesar (Dan) has done such a nice job in his 'Repository material'.....m8, I'm about ready to first Flash to the SGH-i607UCGF1.exe ROM....then try out DaG's SGH-i607UCGI3.bin ROM....have read and printed out the txt instructions within the DaG .zip file.....hope that my vehicle does NOT blow up!

I haven't tried syncing with Outlook yet because I am out on the road this week. This problem came about by trying to save a single manually entered contact into the phone from the internal contacts list.

I am able to enter in all of the info, but when you hit save the error comes up.

Ok...finally took the plunge and now am running the F1-phone/I3-pda combo....the GUI is definately nice, and yes it is nice to have the 'upper characters' properly displaying upon holding the key....

Scrolling with the new PIE (as Kevad007 reported) is somewhat erratic.....within various sites and apps....hopefully this will all be rectified with/when the official WM6 ROM update is released...

Question: I am presently using the default AT&T theme.....with MS Green background, and where it says:

Get Express Mail---Option, if I click on it, PIE reports that the page can not be found.....? I kniow that Seven has a working beta on their site.....but how can I get the latest official Xpress version....(came out a month or so ago?)

I just use a normal POP3 account for Gmail........no extra servers, ect.......for my device email account......thanks

Hi txcaesar,

Thanks...as I have flashed back to the rebrand_WM5 ROM, as I was not too enamoured with the slow, erratic scrolling within the latest PIE WM6 files...
I had to try it out, and if it was not for you and other very 'sharp/keen' members I would have never given it a go!

I have tried out the Gmail app files, and even with the IBM J9 environment and tweaked fonts....was slightly disappointed how the J9 files changed the entire device font too...just wish that Samsung/AT&T would not provide a crippled Java arena...as it looks like it will be the same (even, when/if a official WM6 ROM) is finally released...

The professional, minded enthusiasm displayed by our collective membership is quite nice and I'm proud to be a part of it!

Posted by: Kevad007

One thing I have noted in comparing my WM5 (Original ROM) BJ, with my 2nd Blackjack I have UCGD2 (1st leaked WM6) Radio and UCG13 PDA in side by side testing is that Internet pages do load faster on the WM6 combo. I tried it over and over and WM6 loaded and/or reloaded and/or refreshed faster by about 33% (12 seconds vs. like 18 seconds in one example like perezhilton.com) same page, same circumstances etc.... Not scientifically controlled, but I made everything be about as equal as I could. While the PIE scrolling is not as smooth as the original WM5, the latest UCG13 was an improvement over the very 1st leaked WM6 (UCGD2). Thus, although there is a loss of smoothness in the latest and I would prefer it perform just like the original did, the issue is offset quite a bit because pages load faster for me and I can start scrolling sooner. That's been my experience as I messed around with the two the other night for an hour or so, maybe others have other experiences to share with us. Right now I would not count on there being any major improvements to the eventual Official WM6 ROM we get probably in December, although we can always hope.

If I were Samsung, and I read all this negativity that is coming out of this, and I felt it were AT&T who put us there, to win back customers and show good faith, and slightly justify this last month of holding out, I WOULD PUT ICS BACK IN TH BLACKJACK OFFICIAL ROM UPGRADE NOW! Its in the Tilt, the Q9h and the Pantech Duo, just tell AT&T, look its not appropriate to let them have at it, and not us, esp. since it was in the original. PUT IT BACK IN SAMSUNG, and make your former hardcore fans happy again! And fix every bug, and get PIE smooth, etc...... WIN US BACK, YOU CAN DO IT SAMSUNG!

Oh yeah, and release the official upgrade IMMEDIATELY!

Thanks for listening!!!!!!!!!

Hey guys...I've been checking out this thread since I got my blackjack and discovered there were issues with the bluetooth. It seems no wonder att pushed me to get the blackjack. I've tried going to some of the links that came stored in the favorites and for the most part, any site from att won't ever load. I've read over a hundred pages on a mission from Mars to get the bluetooth to activate voice command and finally updated the ROM to WM6. If I'm not mistaken, the ROM I got was UCGD2. Wasn't that actually a variation of the released WM6 for the i600 over in the UK? I've been unsuccessfull at downloading the cooked ROM that DA_G posted maybe I've missed something somewhere. As anyone seen a ROM yet that addressed the bluetooth issues? I would like to say one thing though that maybe some of you guys have already noticed. that express mail link on the homescreen, once activated causes a serious memory leak. When I open task manager it will have apps like Mailwatcher and others that wouldn't close out. Once I flashed the ROM to wm6 I no longer had that problem and my battery seems to last forever. Something else, in WM6 when I try to sync it says outlook has not been installed. I've reinstalled office twice and still no outlook, does anyone have a .cab file for the outlook in wm6? All of you guys are awesome Intergra, tx, Da_g all of you stick together to get these projects built and it's deffinantly worth a paypal donation... how much I'm not sure well I was considering the overclock function, do you guys think it's safe aslong as you only browse for short periods of time? if you have any links that still work I would appreciate it if you could email it to me at michaelpappas@combattrainingsupplies.com I'd hate to see Samsung Lawyers shutting down anymore links lol
