Rizr z3: Service going in / out

I'm loving my Rizr z3, I got it a few weeks ago and haven't really had any problems. However one thing DOES concern me - for some reason I lose "bars" as I'm typing a text message, to the point I lose service completely. When I'm done typing, however, they come back.
Is this some sort of power saving feature, or is this a problem? I don't lose service when I'm talking on the phone, only when I'm doing things that don't require service (Typing, music player, etc.) and only in areas with 2-3 bar reception.

I know this hasn't reached page 2 yet but its been almost 6 days... I really want to figure this out before my warranty expires - I bought it out of town and considering its over an hour out of town, I really don't want to go there and get a new phone only to find out its normal behaviour.
