Cheap 3g phone for tethering?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have a SE W580i for my phone, and I like it a lot, except for the fact it has no 3g.
I thought I might try to pick up a cheap 3g phone to pick up for tethering purposes. I dont tether often at all, but when I do, i would like for it to be fast, and have low latency so I could even play a little World of Warcraft if i want to. Which is almost impossible due to the 900+ ping i get with Edge.

The only thing i can find right now is a sync for around 100 bucks on craigslist. Would that be a good choice? Also what other cheap phones out there would be good for tethering?

v3xx baby, via charging usb cable or bluetooth

blackjack is good for tethering

but i also dont think you are going to get good enough ping times on any cellular-based network to play online video games.

This is exactly why I am trying to find a cheap used Blackjack. My 3125 doesn't have 3G

blackjacks seem to be way more expensive then a v3xx or a sync. any reason to get any of these over the others? I am most likely only going to be using for tethering since i like my w580. I might be selling my w580 to just get a k850 in the end, but i want to see which option is cheaper over all.

Samsung BlackJack EASIEST EVER

when i tether with my w580 i just add it as a modem and dial up with the *99# number or whatever it is, and theres nothing to it... i would figure any of these other phones are the same, am i wrong?

Blackjack uses bluetooth PAN, they did away with DUN. I use a Mac, and before I hated the fact that I had to update to 10.4.9 just to be able to use bluetooth tethering.

however, now that I have used it, I can honestly say that it is the easiest by far I have ever used as far as tethering and microsoft has finally done something right.

maybe it is? i only ever look at premiere pricing where a refurbished blackjack is at least as affordable as a v3xx

Posted by: echav

i use PAN on my w580, but i figure the connection would be better if it werwe wired to the phone atleast... Does anyone know if the v3xx or sync can be used as a modem?

v3xx, yes for the second time.

already got my 580 on my upgrade. probably will be going for the v3xx then, seen them for 100 bucks or less local craigslist. unless i can get a sync for like 50 bucks

I concur.
HSDPA = WIN!

My bet is with the Samsung a707 (SYNC). I used this with my laptop for the longest time with 0 problems and little to no effort setting up via USB. I think they are free now with 2 year contract (I got mine for $18 via Premier).

I prefer the Blackjack because of the "Internet Connection Sharing". Easiest thing ever to use.

ok im going for the sync or v3xx, just wondering, which would have better reception. I assume the v3xx since i hear moto stuff is great for reception.

V3xx supports HSDPA 3.6

Posted by: echav

is the sync only 1.8?
I'm wondering if there will be a difference in latency, or just download speeds.
Just found a sync i can get for about 60 bucks, but if its only half the speed, it may not be worth it.

Posted by: zephxiii

does the sync use a usb port like the moto? the moto should have the better rf.

Posted by: echav

pretty sure he does usb. but dont think its a standard usb connector.

Posted by: zephxiii

if the sync does not have a standard usb port, then it automatically loses!

Posted by: RabidDogBoy

Unfortunately the Sync doesn't have the mini USB, but I picked up my cable for ~$10 shipped a while back, if anything they are around the same or cheaper than they were then.

As for the speeds, my download speeds were comparable to my cable modem at home and the upload speeds were atleast double.

Oh, and so far phone-wise, my Sync has blown all of my previous phones out of the water in reception/clarity. Luckily I do more data and test messaging than I do voice to justify my 8525.

Posted by: echav

Wow your cable modem must be pretty slow lol
I get this on mine

Posted by: RabidDogBoy

Yeah, I only have a 10Mb connection.

Either way, I was downloading torrents in the same time as it took on my cable modem and I was uploading to my web servers in half the time.

well ive got it down to the v3xx or selling my w580i and getting a k850
