Disable AT&T Medianet button on W580i?

Is there a way to disable the AT&T Medianet button on W580i? I have zero use for it, and I seem to manage to press it accidentally when opening the phone.

I'm guessing AT&T changed it from what Sony Ericsson calls an "activity" button in the hopes of running up an internet connect charge on my account....

debrand it. it will work as se intended afterwards

Are there any disadvantages to debranding it? I'm not familiar with the process, or the effects.

Ya, i would also like to hear the disadvantages to unbranding it.

You would lose the voicemail icon that that shows how much voicemail you have waiting (you still get the voicemail icon, just no number next to it)

You would have to enter MMS and data settings separately, but thats not really a disadvantage.

You would also lose the ability to change the volume from the standby screen, using the volume buttons. After debranding, the volume keys at the standby screen turns into 'phone status'.

I can't think on any more right now...But the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

I've lost the "Shake" feature, not that it was particularly useful to begin with

There is a way to disable the internet button, yet keep all functions of the phone as they came from the carrier. Now, I don't know if the internet will work if you use that, but mms will, as will regular texts.

Go into the settings and go into internet profiles and create a fake profile. Don't enter any settings, just name it fake, and make sure that you select that profile. Press the internet button, it should say: Communication error. Try again or contact your provider for support. If it says that, it worked.

I don't use the internet on any phone, and all of my phones have that setup. I hate the internet button, and I hate accidentally pressing it and getting charged for it.

Just consider this a cheap and simple option to debranding if you are not comfortable in doing that.

Excellent, Heavy Fluid! I did what you said, and now when I press the button all it does is show a status bar for a few seconds, and then clears itself back to the main screen. I don't even get the error message.

Glad it worked for you. Best thing I have ever done to a phone, ever.

Thanks, great tip until I get around to debranding. The W580i forces you to make a "fake" "connect using" setting, too.

Yeah, that's kind of weird. I didn't have to do the latter to my W580i, but when I did the same fake setup on my wife's W580i, it did require me to do it. Now her's gets the error message Heavy Liquid mentioned. Not quite as convenient as the way mine works, and I'm not sure what the difference is in what I did.

Not sure man, as long as it works, or I should say doesn't work, you should be fine.
