difference between edge and EDGE icon

On the blackberry pearl. I've noticed its been flipping back and forth today.

that means the blackberry server connection is connection and disconnecting from the network. capitol means your active on the blackberry server.

GPRS: You can use the phone, send and receive email, PIN, SMS text, and
MMS messages, and use the browser.

edge or gprs or GSM: You can use the phone and send and receive SMS text messages.
SOS: You can only make emergency calls.

OFF: Your connection to the mobile network is turned off.

X: You are not in a wireless coverage area.
