Hi everyone. As i've been reading more and more about the Tilt, I'm starting to think this might be the device fore me. Before I go investing in one, I have a few questions I'm hoping I could get some answers to:
1.) Is the GPS something you have to pay to use, or are there any free to use, good quality apps for it?
2.) Are any potential GPS apps that would answer question #1 good enough to use in a car. In other words, good enough to use that over buying a portable navigation unit? How about something that speaks street names instead of "turn left in 500 ft"?
3.) Is the GPS good enough to use as a hand held unit for when hiking in the woods or unfamiliar areas?
4.) Does the built in browser support tabbed browsing like FireFox and IE7?
5.) Is there a MicroSoft Word type of program on it standard? I write a weekly sports column for a local paper and would consider using this device to write my articles during my lunch breaks.
6.) Is it quick and easy to toggle between the web browser and Word (or any other programs for that matter) without losing what you're working on or looking at?

Hi everyone. As i've been reading more and more about the Tilt, I'm starting to think this might be the device fore me. Before I go investing in one, I have a few questions I'm hoping I could get some answers to:
1.) Is the GPS something you have to pay to use, or are there any free to use, good quality apps for it?
No charge for using the built in gps and the best free apps available to use with the gps is Microsoft LIVE or Google Maps - both for mobile devices.
2.) Are any potential GPS apps that would answer question #1 good enough to use in a car. In other words, good enough to use that over buying a portable navigation unit? How about something that speaks street names instead of "turn left in 500 ft"?
There are navigation software packages available for mobile devices that work just like a stand alone navigation device....Tomtom or Garmin and I know others are mentioned on this forum. I know that Tomtom doesn't give street names, but the others might.
3.) Is the GPS good enough to use as a hand held unit for when hiking in the woods or unfamiliar areas?
I don't know of any mobile software for 'off road' maps, but the gps will work anywhere outside of a structure (and even in some structures)
4.) Does the built in browser support tabbed browsing like FireFox and IE7?
For tabbed browsing you will need to add something to the device. You can add PIE Plus or SPB Pocket Plus to make the included internet explorer work with tabs or you can add another browser that includes that feature
5.) Is there a MicroSoft Word type of program on it standard? I write a weekly sports column for a local paper and would consider using this device to write my articles during my lunch breaks.
The device includes mobile versions of Excel, Word, and Power Point all of which can be used with full editing abilities.
6.) Is it quick and easy to toggle between the web browser and Word (or any other programs for that matter) without losing what you're working on or looking at?
I found that an added program like SPB Pocket Plus offers that feature and I've even remapped a hardware button to give me the option of switching between open programs

Thanks for all of those great replies. I've never tried messing around with hacking any type of phone before. How difficult was it to remap the button like you said? That sounds like something I would want to have.

There is an option in 'settings'> 'buttons' to remap some of the existing buttons to other options. You can add the PTT button as an optional button to remap with a great little program called PTTFix (available by search on this forum or XDAdevelopers). The option to remap a button to 'switch' between programs may be a feature of SPB Pocket Plus - one of the many features of this software is the addition of quite a few extra functions that can be added to the hardware buttons. If you buy the Tilt I would recommend getting 'brave' about adding 3rd party software and doing 'tweaks' that make this an even better device.

I will certainly keep that all in mind. Thank you!
