Malfunction joy stick repair

My son has Cingular 2125 and the joystick is working correctly. It's not always responsive. You have to jiggle it, etc. to get it to respond. It's out of warranty--only a few weeks and I'm trying to get them to replace it but I won't make a federal case out of it.
Is there any possible self-repair for this?
If not, what's a reliable online service outfit?
Are there usually local people who can do repairs?
What's the deal with HTC's in house repair service?
If repair is not a reasonably priced option, I'll just give my 2125 to my son--he has 2gb of content on his memory card--and buy an unlocked Motorola L2 or L6, which you can get for only $100. ATT's no commitment phone prices are higher than the unlocked open market, and I'll have to wait three months before they'll allow me the privilege of extending my contract for two years in order to get a discounted phone. More than enough for me. I do a lot of phoning but that's about it. My wife has an L2 and I like the slvr profile better than the clunky 2125.

if your only a couple weeks out of warranty, att will probably help you out, maybe up to a month after it's done and that's it. you should try calling them.
