Tilt and Travel?

So, got my Tilt after having and 8525 and 8125. Yes, I am a very loyal HTC fanboy! I used my 8525 in Ireland recently with an O2 sim and loved it. Great reception, no issues.
Now, I go up to New York this weekend on a little driving adventure all set to use Live Search to find my way, but, I have no signal. I traveled from Newark Airport to Oneonta New York (outside Cooperstown) and never had a signal. No phone, no data, nothing. Meanwhile my fiance with her unlocked Rokr Z6 had full service almost the whole time. As an aside, I have to admit the Z6 is a great little phone! I digress however, alright, so why did I not have service? I have the stock ROM with nothing added that would change my settings. Yet, no service. Quite simply I am at a loss.

When I got back to Newark airport to fly out, I had service again. And, back home in sunny (and warm) South Florida, I had full service with HSDPA and all. So, what gives?

does the phone work at all in gsm only areas? what sim card did you have in it? the other thing to do would be to figure out what bands are being used in the areas of no service etc.

It did not work in any area, regardless of coverage. It is interesting however that possibly it is an issue with "G" only coverage. However, down in S. Fla. there is mostly entire 3G coverage, so it would be difficult for me to check locally. I have the newest SIM card which came withe Tilt.

ahh i see:

Oneonta is smack dab in the middle a roaming area, you should have been roaming on whoever's network that is, your fiance was. Unless this roaming agreement is getting thrown out or something. I would call ATT and ask them about this.

Thanks, maybe there was an issue with the phone picking up a roaming network, I will call ATT and seek an answer. Only other strange thing is why it would not receive a signal in New Jersey? It dropped as soon as I left the airport. Literally, I walked out of the airport and "wam" no signal!
