P1i Data Connection Issues.

OK, here's the situation I'm in. I have several application on my P1i, both UIQ3 applications and Java midlets, that attempt create outgoing socket connections to various services. Some of these include Jabber applets, SSH clients (PuTTY) and similar. However they cannot seem to get connections out, the fail the connection, throw "null" errors or sometimes even "Hostname lookup failed" errors.
I thought maybe AT&T was blocking the outgoing port on the EDGE network, but I frequently tether my computer and use these services, and I did it again and am still able to. I'm not using the WAP proxy on the GPRS account.
At one point, PuTTY did work, but now it doesn't seem to work at all. I also installed a service midlet called Reporo, which ran a "connection test" to see how I was able to connect, and the Socket connection failed but HTTP & HTTPs were OK.
So is this a misconfiguration issue (it doesn't seem so)? Or is there something else going on? Has anyone else seen this?
Thanks.

Update: Putty seems to work over the wifi, but the Jabber clients don't. Which means that it's not an A&T thing, at least in part...
This makes no sense to me..

Updated the firmware. Now, the Jabber client works on the WLAN, the SSH client works on the WLAN, but neither work over GPRS. Both are getting "-3012" errors and the text "Unknown Error". I can't find anything about -3012 in the UIQ3 dev docs.
I tried setting the Midlet account for the J2ME Jabber client in the control panel to the GPRS, that didn't help. The midlet does have internet permissions, and I approve it each session.
I may have to get hold of another SIM and try it with a non-AT&T sim and see if that helps, but I doubt it, because these work through tethering and I'm using the same APN/User/Pass when I tether as when I'm using it right on the unit.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

I ended up semi-solving the problem over here:

just in case anyone else has similar issues.
