wifi help with the tilt

Hi all,

I need some help with my Tilt. This info is probably in the sticky about the tips and tricks, but I couldn't find it using the search feature. If this is a repeat, I apologize.

What are the optimal settings to have for the Tilt's wifi? I'm at a location that has wifi. My laptop is getting four out of five bars for service and the signal strength is good. My tilt only shows one bar. I realize the tilt won't have as good a wifi antenna as my laptop, but I would have thought it would be somewhat better.

I've even noticed at home when I'm sitting right next to my wifi antenna, the tilt doesn't get better than four out of five bars for strength for the wifi.....so I'm thinking I have my settings wrong somehow? I do have the wlan set for best performance, but it doesn't seem to make much difference. Is there anything I can do, or any wifi software I can get that would optomize the wifi on the tilt?

Thanks for your help!!!!!!!

man that sucks! my 8125 gets crappy wifi reception too and was hoping that was fixed in the newer phones. there is a wifi setting that is a bar you can adjust for power saving or performance, i'm not sure if that has anything to do with reception though.

There are a lot of possible reasons for this, but the first thing to do is check signal strength at various locations. It's not unusual to run into cobinations of wireless nic and router that just don't play well with each other.

4 out of 5 is fine.

Often if you camp directly next to the antenna, signal strength will be less than optimum. This is true with any wifi device.

What I would do is check a couple other locations.
You can call your original location bad, and your home location good, so it's inconclusive at this point.

Where I live you can't swing a cat without hitting several open access points.

Try 4 or 5, and if you see a pattern, go straight to a direct ATT wireless store and insist on a side by side comparison with an active Tilt in the store.

If you see more than one bar difference, swap it for a new unit.

It's unlikely that you're more than 30 days out from purchase, so you have sufficient leverage to demand a replacement.

If you decide to swap it for a low end freebie phone, ATT has just lost some real cash since they can only sell the returned unit as refurb.

Robert. Thanks for the info! Unfortunatly my tilt is 32 days old. It just started doing this the last couple days....talk about timing. Anyway, I went to an AT&T store tonight. I confirmed that thier tilt was getting a much better wifi reception than mine. So I called up thier warrenty department. They worked on it for a little bit, and found out that my phone is defective. A new one is on it's way to replace my tilt. Thank You for the suggestions!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi,

Can someone explain exactly the relationship between ROM and RAM on the Tilt (or for that matter any PPC).

Specifically:

Do programs execute directly out of ROM or are they copied into RAM at boot up?

Do storage card programs take longer to start up than ROM based programs?

Is there a better Radio version in Europe or on another HTC PPC than the US Titl supplied radio - I have seen posts on the Hermes where that went a long way to fix reception.

Thanks,
Barry
