Blackberry + ATT

hey guys, sorry if this asked a lot but I couldn't find anything in the search (i've never been terribly good at searching)

does ATT require a blackberry plan if you buy a BB phone? I know that Sprint and Verizon require a plan if you buy one. Does ATT? thanks!

Yes, they do. Without the BB plan, a BB is just a regular phone (with a QWERTY), because you won't be able to utilize the e-mail features (especially) and the Internet (mostly). And that said, there are few reasons to buy a BB and not use those features; otherwise, just get a regular phone or a Windows Mobile or some other smart device.

Yeah you have to

i havent been told we cant sell them without, however the rebates are tied to the BB service, so you wouldnt get that. also everything fractured said

It's not so much AT&T either, as it is RIM. RIM gets a cut of the money from the Blackberry data plan every month, and in return they register your Blackberry on their network, which they require that you use in order to receive e-mail and surf the web. This is true regardless of the carrier you're on.

I think the OP is asking if they REQUIRE a BB plan. You can cancel the BB at any time, right?

(not that I would ever want to!)

After you receive your rebates, if any. If you buy from Amazon, you can't make any changes for 6 months, otherwise they will bill you full price for the device.

I'm proof that you do not need a BB data plan.

I just purchased the BB Curve through the Blue Website and I had the option to add or not add a BB plan. I opted not at this point and there were no problems. As others have mentioned, it is kind of wasteful, but I need to save up some money and then I will take it to the max.

You dont have to have a BB plan to Purchase a BB. The problem with not having a BB plan will be when you try to get rebates (not to mention data).

Newegg has the 8310 for $25 after rebates, and they don't seem to require you to add the blackberry plan. That being said why is the blackberry plan more than the iphone plan? $45 for unlimited data? Can you get the blackberry without the data plan and somehow add the iphone data plan?

The ATT BB personal unlimited plan is $34.99 or $29.99 with a qualifying voice plan. The BES version is $44.99 or $39.99. I think there is a personal unlimited with text messaging for somewhere about $40.

Looks like the $29.99 only includes email. The cheapest one with data is $39.99. Crazy that it is twice as much as the iphone data plan.

A BB data plan is not required with at&t -- and certainly not for this reason.

Once again, this is the same old, same old that gets parroted on every BB discussion site. Some people need/want a BB data plan. Some don't. That's all there is to it. Not wanting a BB data plan doesn't automatically place you in the Windows Mobile camp. That's just faulty logic. Plenty of people want a stable and durable non WM device whether or not they want push email or internet access.

The $29.99 plan INCLUDES unlimited data (i.e. web browsing, sending pictures via email, etc.). SMS messages are extra.

This is covered in detail in this sticky in the RIM forum.
