1.1.2 Ringtones

Am I just an idiot, I've worked Nextel ringtones for years, now I get over here and am just straight up puzzled. I'm trying the rename method where you rename it with the extension .m4r and I can't get it to work at all. Can somebody please help me out? This is the method that I read off of a forum

Hey, I got a custom rt to work via editing it to under 30 secs in GarageBand and then exporting to iTunes...then converting to AAC in iTunes (being sure to delete the other files I had created), then dragging that file to the Finder and changing the xt to .m4r and dropping the file onto my iTunes icon in the Dock...which placed it in the dedicated Ringtones folder in iTunes. Then you would need to make sure the ringtone/s is selected in the RT tab when you sync your iPhone.

[Oddly, I was not able to duplicate this process with another song, but I may have left a step out...I wasn't able to drag the converted AAC file to my desktop from iTunes...nothing happened when I tried to do this.]

This is after the update to 1.1.2 and iTunes 7.5. Thanks a ton, Chupa. I've been wanting a way to do this since I got my phone several weeks ago.

For others, the apparently easier way to do this ALL within iTunes is (pasted from some other mac boards):

1. Also, while in itunes go to a song you want as a ringtone, right click and select get info. then select the options tab. you can choose what portion of the song you want as the ringtone (less than 30 seconds). then press ok. then right click on the file again and choose "convert to aac". it will make a new file in the ringtone size. drag it to your desktop (if you'd like) right click on it and rename the extension to an m4r. then it should be ready to be re added to itunes. I just did this and they work great!

OR/SIMILAR:

2. Ok with the new 1.1.2 ability to play (<=30 second) custom ringtones, I decided to try something.

I took a full .m4a file (.mp3 works as well), that I had in my iTunes library. Nothing special...just a song from a CD I ripped. Anyway, so there was a specific starting point in the track that I wanted the ringtone to start at. So what I did is:

1.) Made a copy of the .m4a file, and renamed it to something else.m4a.

2.) Then I played the new track in iTunes to find the spot (in time using the meter on the top of the iTunes window) where I needed the ringtone to start. It happened to be at the 0:27 spot.

3.) Then I went to the track info and changed the start and end of the track to 0:27 to 0:57 (30 seconds), removed references to the album name/track number/part of a compilation checkbox/etc, titled it the way I wanted it, and saved the file.

4.) Then I did another: "convert to .aac" on the modified file.

5.) Then I browsed to my file on my computer, changed the extension to .m4r, added it to iTunes, and synced to my iPhone.

Bingo...instant fully-customed ringtone all through iTunes.

what version of itunes are you running?

What a load of trouble just to be able to do what every other phone in the world can already do.
