Why does this subforum exist?

1. Android doesn't exist on any device until end of 2Q 08.
2. Android SDK is nothing more than sandboxed java. It is very unlikely that carriers will allow access beyond that.

I chose "embedded linux" or "mobile linux" as a better subforum title. That encompasses Android and others like LiMo, Trolltech, Openmoko, etc. Once Android is released, it shouldn't be long until users are able to change software stacks i.e. replace Android with Trolltech QT. This would allow users to actually write software for the OS and not just sandboxed java. Therefore the questions asked in the subforum would be about mobile linux, not Android.

It's here because Howard wants it here.

I think Open Handset Alliance should focus more on the OpenMoko project if they want to be truly open.

If your linux handset is "open" you have a choice of GTK, QT, javafx, e17. That is 4 different ui/platforms for development in addition to anything else people want to port.

e17/enlightenment running on neo1973/openmoko stack: http://gstaedtner.net/e17_on_Neo.avi

Android - SDK gives sandboxed java, with the promise of "future" open source releases.

I know no companies would go for complete GPL, but shouldn't customers have a choice? It's just more of the same except this time Google products come preloaded. Judging by the poll, I guess people welcome that.
