State College, PA

Since there doesn't seem to be any information on State College, PA here I thought I might start this thread.

I've heard all kinds of rumors... Best case I've heard is December 2007 to February 2008 time frame, depending on weather. I dunno, I suppose like others I will believe when I see it.

I also heard Verizon EVDO was turned on here recently. I don't know if this would provide impetus to AT&T or not but a little competition never hurt!

Anyone else have any news to share?

Thanks and best wishes.

i havent been back to state college for a couple years now. guess there aint no 3g there.

I have heard from sources that can be trusted (by me anyway ) that site upgrades will be underway in February in State College. I don't have start/finish dates only some basic info.

I don't yet know when things will be turned up but it the physical install looks like it will be timed as removal of TDMA and installation of UMTS.

So for those who suspect that the AMPS/TDMA shutdown will result in a faster deployment of 3G it looks like that is the way it is going to be, at least around here.

edit: Oh yeah, Verizon EDVO is live here and has been for a few months.

It appears ATT is starting upgrades around State College.

There is a site on top of a senior housing facility near my office that is being visited by a crane today. Here is a very crappy cell phone pic of it.

Most recent rumor I heard was mid-April for 3G turn on.

As of this morning, April 7, 3G is online in State College.

DSLReports Mobile Speed Test on my Treo 750 indicates 850 Kbps with functional HSDPA.

CONFIRMED! I'm a student at psu and today around 10am my 3g indicator went off on my blackjack 2.

Just for info... via USB to my Treo 750 (Bluetooth on my laptop maxes at 1 Mbps, not sure about the device itself):

I'll take just shy of 1 Mbps for now. I do need to get my hands on a 3.6 Mbps capable device to test with as well.

Is this on campus only or throughout the community? I spend a lot of time on the west end of town (Off Atherton)
