I need some help with putting a ringer on an LG-VX8300 phone

I seem to be having some major issues trying to put a ringtone on my LG-VX8300 phone. I have tried searching for help, but they all assume you have some kind of prior knowledge about your cables/drivers, and what not, and I don't have any of that. I don't know what I'm doing at all. That's why I would like to have step-by-step instructions if possible. So here's the deal.

I have a .wma file (that's what I've seen/been told is the file that the phone's ringers should be) of a ringtone I would like to put on the phone. It's all pre-recorded and ready to go, it just has to get from the computer to the phone. So that's why I got a cable to do so. Things aren't working out so well.

At first, I tried to send the phone the ringer, and I got a screen that said something along the lines of "the phone is not communicating with the cable". I've been looking all over to find out what the problem is, and it's too complicated for me. Does anybody know anything about this or can anybody be of any help? Thanks in advance for your help, it's greatly appreciated.

EDIT: After lots of hard work and searching, I have the file on my phone, but it is silent.
