non iphone user here - best way to find out firmware?

Hello all, i am very interested in purchasing an iphone(need to get rid of the trusty samsung D500 after 3 years). at first i was going to purchase a unlocked iphone for the extra money but after readin on here for a few hours. downloading and printing guides i can see that it is not as bad as i thought it was.
it seems as there is much hope even for 1.1.2 users on here, i would like to know the best way to find out what firmware is on the iphone if i were to go out and purchase a new locked iphone so i know what to buy and what not to buy. i would like to buy a 1.1.1 iphone and for now want to steer away from the 1.1.2 and it seems from reading that you cant tell unless you connect to itunes?
