Motorola Q9h (Q9 Global) GPS issue...

OK, first off, I just want to make sure this is not an isolated problem, because if it is, I'll return the phone and get another one. I don't know if it's just me, but if I go directly into Google Maps or Windows Live Search, it doesn't find any GPS satellites. It will just try for a while and then say the GPS doesn't seem to be connecting or something like that.

If I launch Telenav first, leave it running, and then go into GM or WLS, they both eventually lock onto a signal. I say eventually because it still takes forever, I'm talking 2-3 minutes forever. This is in 3G coverage in New York City, and Edge coverage in the suburbs of NYC so I don't know what the problem could be.

So does anyone have any suggestions or any tweaks that they can think of to get this damn thing working properly because GPS was a major reason when it came to why I got this phone. If it doesn't work right, I'm going to be fairly pissed off and probably trade it in for the BlackBerry 8310 which worked just fine for me when I tried it or for the new Tilt (8925). But to be honest, I really like this phone and I just want it to work.

I don't use Telenav, so I can't comment on that. But I connected twice this morning using Google. The first time it took about 2 minutes to lock in the satellites. I then shut the GPS off for 30 minutes, and then turned it back on. Satellites were acquired in about 30 seconds.

That said, yesterday I was not able to connect - not sure if there was something going on with Google or AT&T. At one point it said I needed a data plan. Today, no issues.

Mine is very slow to lock as well. It works pretty well once it does.

I had the phone for aprox 1 week and the gps was very slow in obtaining its first sat lock.

When I bought my first n95 it had the same problem, but then they added AGPS as a firmware upgrade and I started to get a lock in less than 30 seconds. My new n95-3 came with the built in gps chip and the agps software out of the box. works great

Perhaps Motorola will do the same. By the time I got a lock with the q, I was already oon the highway lol

I dont have Telenav either, but using Google Maps usually takes around 2-3mins to lock on some sats.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but when exiting GoogleMaps, the 'gps' in the top home screen bar never goes away. Does anyone else have this issue or know a way to turn of GPS when not in use?

My phone doesn't say GPS in the home screen bar, so I'm not entirely sure what you're referring to. However, if you want to turn off GPS, all you do is go into task manager and kill whatever program was using it, in your case Google Maps. That should end the data connection.

Just to let you guys know, it seems that Paul over at MoDaCo has fixed the GPS issue. Head over here for more details.

Have fun everyone with your almost instantaneous GPS locks.
