There never WERE any "news" about a larger capacity iPhone. NONE. The iPod touch coming in 16gb, along with Apple dropping the 4gb model entirely and reducing the price on the 8gb model, fueled SPECULATION by people - who are not associated with Apple nor experts in anything related to Apple or their products, I might add - that Apple might, MAYBE, release a 16gb model when they released the iPhone in Europe.

Which hasn't happened. Nor has any press release, news, or information regarding any such larger size come from Apple.

When it does, you can bet your @$$ there will be ten thousand+ posts on HoFo about it.

I suspect that the next upgrade to the iPhone will be the 16GB iPhone and it will only be offered in black. (with a nice black tax mark-up on top of that)

there wouldnt be news on a phone that doesnt exist. The very idea of it is speculation based around the idea "the touch looks like the iPhone and it has 16gb. Now I want a 16gb!"

We will get a higher capacity iPhone of coarse, but probably not until the next version in a couple years

Actually, several people have soldered the flash RAM from the Touch into the iPhone (replacing the iPhone's RAM, of course) and have 16gb iPhones. Not for the faint of heart, of course. Nor those without steady hands and solid soldering skills.

if and when a 16gb is released, it will be posted on every forum in every thread, etc...

and if you used the search feature (or google) for that matter, you would see that a 16gb iphone has never even been confirmed. people just "think" it may happen. therefore, it may never. don't wait for something that isn't even real yet.

Yeah but my point was just that it's JUST speculation. Nothing has been confirmed at all, so you don't even know if there WILL be a 16G iPhone yet.

key word is "speculation". By people who don't work for Apple, or even in the cel phone industry, for that matter.

IMHO, "speculation" is too strong of a word, even. As is "rumor". it's VAPORWARE.

Will Apple release a larger-capacity iPhone? Maybe. Probably. Sooner or later. Will it be the same as the one out now, but with more capacity? I'll let you know as soon as Apple releases details, whenever - IF ever - that is.

Well, I just got off the phone with Steve and here's what he had to say about upcoming iPhone successor:

16GB and 32GB models at launch. 16GB will be dropped after two months or so.

SIM unlocked out of the box. No more AT&T exclusivity.

3G

Removable battery

Third-party applications, including "homebrew" support.

Full Bluetooth support, including A2DP.

Built-in GPS.

Mass storage support, including full drag-and-drop functionality. iTunes will be optional.

Early iPhone adopters (current version owners) will be elgible for "pity" credit. Amount to be determined.

Price - in the words of Steve: "Price doesn't matter, it's a frigging Apple!"

Actually, vaporware is a product that has been announced but the release date has been pushed back indefinitely. I personally would say "rumor" is too strong, rather than "speculation", because rumors usually have some element of truth as a seed but speculation is people looking at something and deciding on their own that something else is coming.
