Why update to 1.1.2 Firmware???

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: MacGeek15

Here are just some of the reasons.

*Faster and smoother operatability, you don't feel the lag anytime during a screen change
Apps, including 3rd party, respond to functions must faster.
* 95% of the Apps for v1.1.1 work (they all haven't been tested yet)
* The volume of the speakers is more louder and does not tear the speaker on high volumes or pitch sounds.
* The International support with AppSupport makes it now possible to: Receive service SMS's from banks and other operators which are now readable without the gabbled text.
* The Caller ID works without mentioning the country code before the number in the Address Book.
* Voicemail Notification now works! (Concurrent problem with Rogers and Fido customers in older firmwares)
* Processing speed and bus frequency of the processor has been bumped up to 412 MHz CPU Freq. and a 103 MHz Bus Freq. (Originally 400 MHz CPU Freq. and a 100 MHz Bus Freq in v1.1.1). This is documented by SysInfo
* Much Better Battery Management
-Wi-Fi life is improved as it now switches into a less power hungry standy mode
-New standby modes for EDGE and Wi-Fi. EDGE standby icon indicates a blue block instead of "E" and Wi-Fi standy icon indicates grey signal strength instead of blue. In turn, the iPhone now searches for EDGE or Wi-Fi only when prompted by the user (opening Safari,Youtube, etc)
* When entering a password, the shift key acted as CAPS LOCK in 1.1.1. This has been fixed.
* When you turn off the phone and turn it back on, it goes straight to the home screen instead of the slider screen.

now if you feel the urge to update to 1.1.2, just follow my Guide to update from 1.0.2 or 1.1.1

Thanks for this, but I feel some of your points are a bit subjective.

I don't "feel" that now, using 1.1.1

I'd prefer 100%, of course, but then again, as long as the phone works, that's the most important thing for me.

What about volume over BlueTooth?

Eh.

I'm AT&T Wireless (aka Cingular Blue), so "eh" again, as my VM indicator works fine.

Now THAT'S interesting. But it makes me think that it should be possible for us to modify the CPU speed and bus freq. no matter what firmware we're on.

Hmm...good. Not compelling, mind you, but good.

I did not know that. Interesting.

That's a fix I bet can be applied to 1.1.1 and earlier versions somehow. I'd like to see it.

I'm tempted...but there's no "compelling" reason to upgrade a working, unlocked 1.1.1 phone, IMHO. Maybe if it added new features or something, but I don't see much that makes me want to upgrade.

So upgrading a 1.1.1 OTB iPhone to 1.1.2 doesn't upgrade the bootloader to the "unlockable" one?

Geek I have a silly question, but if I restore my phone will I lose my contacts???

Yes you will, but as long as they're backed up, when you connect to iTunes, you can restore all your sync'd data

okay, let me remind you of the features released with 1.1.1 Firmware

iTunes Wi-Fi music store
Louder speakerphone and receiver volume
Home button double-click shortcut to phone favorites or music controls
Space bar double-tap shortcut to intelligently insert period and space
Mail attachments are viewable in portrait and landscape
Stocks and cities in Stocks and Weather can be re-ordered
Apple Bluetooth Headset battery status in the Status Bar
Support for TV Out
Preference to turn off EDGE/GPRS when roaming internationally
New passcode lock time intervals
Adjustable alert volume

Well, are any of these reasons really compelling? Realistically, NO, but did everyone update to this based on stability/security fixes? YES they did and even perhaps you as well even though there weren't much features added to 1.0.2 to upgrade to 1.1.1.

And with my points, once again HOW WILL YOU EVEN KNOW IF YOU HAVEN'T TESTED 1.1.2 FIRMWARE????

Coming from an Unlocked 1.1.1 to 1.1.2, i think I should know more of the differences that you do.

and stop with the SEARCH on posts.....

Posted by: maximumsport

OH man just hit the update button in itunes... the suspense builds...

Haha it's so much easier if you don't need to unlock. How are you liking 1.1.2?
so far, my experience with 1.1.2 has been great. It seems to be running faster and the battery life seems to be better; I'm getting at least 2 extra hours

Good to hear buddy, good to hear!

Posted by: Drakkhen

I must agree - Battery Life is at least 20% better..that alone is worth the upgrade...

Posted by: Spydi

Can anyone confirm that it fixes voicemail indicator problems on 1.1.1? I did the http://iphone.unlock.no/ method for jailbreaking and then anysim 1.1. Everything works fine except for the voicemail indicator.

Posted by: Drakkhen

what provider are you with...if it's Rogers, just get a new 4000 Series sim card...

Posted by: Spydi

I have a 4000 series sim card and its not sending the notifications. Its odd, we did another one about a week before I got mine and it worked fine. Then I got mine a week later and it hasn't worked since.

Posted by: Drakkhen

Well, you can try it - I had no problems with my series 4000 SIM, so I couldn't say. I do know that I get an SMS when I get voicemail now, which is something that I didn't get in 1.1.1

I've been getting them too, which is pretty awesome. No more wondering how many voicemails have haha

Posted by: Spydi

I think I'll try the 1.1.2 upgrade and hopefully it will fix my issues. Its a minor inconvience, but still a pain when you have no clue if you have voicemails.

Posted by: cdncableguy

i don't have a 4000 sim and it is working with 112. Any point in getting one?

I'd just prefer to have the new sim card rather than the old ones, especially if you plan on using a data plan

Was your voicemail notification working in 1.1.1?

I don't think they had this feature in 1.1.1

Posted by: Drakkhen

I would get a red Dot in 1.1.1 when I had voicemail....That's only after I switched to the new SIM.

Before I got the SIM, I'd get a red dot every time I rebooted the phone, switch back and forth from airplane mode or toggled EDGE on or off...That got annoying...real quik...

Posted by: cdncableguy

no VM notification when i had 1.1.1 I have it know. Will rogers charge for a new sim? I did get one with my pearl but my wife is using that sim. if they charge for the sim can I get rogers to make the old sim for my wife and the 4000 for me?

Posted by: Spydi

And you guys are all using the AnySim 1.2 unlock?

Posted by: Drakkhen

There is only AnySim 1.2.1u unlock if you are at 1.1.2 -

you ARE at 1.1.2 aren't you?

YOU DAMN WELL SHOULD BE!!!!

(I'm kidding)

I'm on 1.1.2

Posted by: Spydi

Ha. I will be. Just scouring the site for the best method. Just worried I will screw something up. Ha.

I still get the +1... before any incoming numbers on my CID. Should that be there?

Yes. You will always get the +1 on incoming calls.

That way you can save that number to your contacts and then dial straight from contacts to dial them anywhere* in the world. No need to worry about contry codes or whatever.

It's handy when you are on vacation, you can still use your speed dials and whatnot.

And, of course, if you are travelling within your own country you don't need to wonder: "Do I need to enter a 1 in front o the number? I am not sure if it is long distance or not..." "+1" will always work whether it is long distance or local.

What MacGeek15 was refering to was the glitch in 1.1.1 where if you saved a number in your contacts without the "+1" (ex: 604-614-5599) and you call displayed showed it with the "+1" (ex: +1-604-614-5599) then it was not recognizing it as the same contact.
