Believe it or not, I can't get a straight answer to this simple question: can the Siemens M46 be used as a wireless modem via IR? In other words, is there an IR port on the phone?

The M46 does have IRDA

Well, I visually inspected the phone at T-Mobile, and there is no IR. What model Siemens works with T-Mobile that does have an IR? I really like the S46, but it's TDMA, right?

It's a multiband fone... gsm & tdma

Nope the S46 is GSM 900/1900 and TDMA . Here's a link for you:

I always see it only for AT&T. If it's triband TDMA & GSM, can I use it on T-Mobile just by popping in my SIM?

if it's gsm and tdma it is multiband... even classified by siemens as multiband. If you go here and click on s46 you will notice it says Multiband

Sorry, multiband. So, I can use this for T-Mobile (strictly GSM)?

You should be able to considering that it is a GSM-capable phone. But I must say that I haven't heard of anyone else trying this. It probably has been attempted before.

Keep us posted if you succeed

I haven't succeeded, but there are at least 2 of these phones that are unlocked for sale on ebay ( I may buy one). All of the rest specifically state they are locked for AT&T.

You'd be lucky to get an unlocked S46 so I would say if the price is in your budget and everything else checks out (good condition etc) then by all means go for it . AT&T does not provide the unlock codes for their phones so people have to get them unlocked at places like www.gsmphonesource.com or www.bongowireless.com. There are other places but these two sites come up here on HoFo a lot.

Anyway, I wish you luck, I saw a couple of people using their S46s here in London on the way from Gatwick but I don't know if they were unlocked or using AT&T back in the US.

Good Luck

I think you guys have your phones mixed up, the S46 does have IR, the M46 does not. The S46 is a TDMA/GSM phone, the M46 is a GSM only model(1900).
