How To: Migrate from Palm Desktop to Outlook

I thought I would share my successful but painful migration from Palm Desktop to Outlook when I bought my HTC Touch on Sunday. This should work for anybody moving from Palm to WM6.

CONTACTS:

In Palm Desktop select all of your contacts and click File> Export VCard...

This will save all your contacts in a multi-entry vcard 3.0 file.

Outlook can not read this file as it only imports single-entry vcard files.

Solution?
Visit this website...

Select CSV and make sure "Filter vCards with e-mail only" is not selected.

Import this CSV file into Outlook. You may need to open the file first with Excel and then resave it as a CSV file.

The only field it did not map for me automatically was Organization to Business Name.

Now on to Calender...

From Palm Desktop select your calender and then File> Export... and select Date Book Archive (*.DBA) from the drop down list.

Create or log into your a Yahoo.com account and import your calender into yahoo using their .DBA import under account settings (There are many places this can be)

Export your calender from Yahoo.com as a CSV file.

Import this CSV file into Outlook, you may need to open and resave it using Excel.

MEMOS: I am not sure how to export memos to Outlook Notes as I did not have to do this, perhaps somebody will be kind enough to add this information.

Thats it, boy did MS or Palm not make this easy!!

Well I did this the hard way. I first tried to also use a CSV file to export the Palm MEMOS. The Palm Desktop does create a CSV with all the MEMO data. I then imported the memo CSV file into the Outlook Notes program. It *appeared* to work, creating a Note file for each Palm memo. But then for some reason when I went to sync with my Touch, all those Notes files ended up with nothing inside.

So, one by one, I copy/pasted the contents of each Palm memo into those (appropriately named) Notes files. Took about 30 minutes, but at least I know the job is done.

Well, they do make it easier; you do have to have your Palm device and your Palm desktop CD, though. First, make sure your Palm and desktop are sync'd, then insert your Palm desktop cd; go to where you change which program to sync with from Palm desktop to Outlook (Outlook must be already installed, of course). I believe you get to a point where you select which items to sync to Outlook, then reconnect your Palm and sync again. This time everything should go to Outlook. You can sync your calendar, contacts, memos, and task lists to Outlook. You should now be ready to sync your HTC device with Outlook, which now has all of your old Palm info contained in it. I just did that to sync my new BB Pearl and it worked great.
