Software update on AT&T Pearl breaks multitap?

After upgrading my AT&T Pearl using the latest version of software provided by AT&T, the multitap function is terrible and flaky. About two thirds of the times that I press a button twice to get the 2nd letter, I get 2 of the first letter (qq instead of w, aa instead of s). I definitely noticed the change immediately after updating the software, having used multitap on both my compact keyboard BlackBerry phones for the last 3 years without problems. I tried changing the key repeat rate in screen/keyboard options, but that didn't seem to do anything at all either.

The file I used to update is the AT&T software is "8100M_PBr4.2.1_rel154_PL2.3.0.78_A4.2.1.96_ATT.exe ". I tried to run the TMo update, but it must be older than the AT&T one, because after installing and launching the BlackBerry desktop software, it did not start the rest of the update process. The TMo update file I have is "8100_Pearl_4.2.1.107.exe".

Has anyone else come across the same problem, or have any ideas on how to fix it?

make sure you e-mail RIM your issue so they can have this fixed?

cant you downgrade our firmware anyway?

Is there a way to downgrade the firmware that does not involve wiping the device completely? I have tried installing older software using the normal upgrade procedure, but when it loads the desktop manager, no updates are detected to install and nothing happens.

Did you back up your phone before doing the upgrade?

Yeah, I made a backup then, but the backup is 2 days old now, I would rather not restore it.

The blackberry support knowledge base has the multitap thing listed as a known problem with no resolution for the tmo version of the software. Nothing about AT&T though. I'd email them if I could ever find an address.
